Did Canadians want to take on the status of becoming an “Associate Member” of the EU, did they vote to ask for such a status?
I’m seeing commentary saying that Canada’s Carney opting for Canada to join the EU as it’s first “Associate Member”–this in reaction to Trump’s attempt to negotiate what is merely a limited and fairer trade deal–is a disastrous move, potentially opening up Pandora’s Box; a whole giant can of worms.
This because, while Trump was just dealing with trade, when the bureaucrats of the EU get their claws into Canada, in return for that Associate status, Canada will be giving up some portion of it’s sovereignty, because these EU bureaucrats are going to want to, in effect, reach into Canada and to increasingly regulate more and more aspects of Canada’s economy and society, very likely trying to coerce the government and people of Canada to adhere to their diktats and standards in a lot of different areas.
