  1. Did Canadians want to take on the status of becoming an “Associate Member” of the EU, did they vote to ask for such a status?

I’m seeing commentary saying that Canada’s Carney opting for Canada to join the EU as it’s first “Associate Member”–this in reaction to Trump’s attempt to negotiate what is merely a limited and fairer trade deal–is a disastrous move, potentially opening up Pandora’s Box; a whole giant can of worms.

This because, while Trump was just dealing with trade, when the bureaucrats of the EU get their claws into Canada, in return for that Associate status, Canada will be giving up some portion of it’s sovereignty, because these EU bureaucrats are going to want to, in effect, reach into Canada and to increasingly regulate more and more aspects of Canada’s economy and society, very likely trying to coerce the government and people of Canada to adhere to their diktats and standards in a lot of different areas.

  2. So, is Carney really serious about this “Associate”status, or is this just another step in his Kabuki dance with Trump?

Was applying for Associate status discussed and agreed to by the political leaders in Canada, or, did Carney just pull it out of his hat?

And, by the way, does the Canadian Parliament, or even the Crown, have any role or say in this “Associate” business, given the obligations it will likely entail for Canada, it’s government, and it’s people?

  3. “Muslim conference boots independent reporter while other media speak.”

…the evening before the conference started, a CAIR staffer sent an email from Edward Ahmed Mitchell, the group’s national executive director, denying The Center Square access to the conference.

“We thank you for registering to attend CAIR’s Policy Conference this weekend,” Mitchell wrote. “The conference is closed to the press…”

The next morning, Saylor [CAIR’s research and advocacy director] appeared to qualify Mitchell’s remark. “Unfortunately,” Saylor said, “we didn’t want all coverage of the event.”
    […]
The Center Square covers government and public policy with taxpayers in mind and sought to attend CAIR’s conference after finding that CAIR and its affiliated chapters have received nearly $500,000 in federal grants and tens of millions of dollars in state grants, primarily California.
    […]
Saylor promised to discuss the selective media ban after the conference but did not respond to a follow-up question as to why The Center Square was singled out. The media organizations that attended did not produce public stories and did not respond to The Center Square’s requests for comment.

  4. About Canada, it’s nothing but rhetoric. Puffery and propaganda, scoring political points because of Euro- or NorAm impotence.

    What am I missing?

  6. David Bernstein — GMU Scalia School of law, IIRC — tells us that Iran has been expanding the targeting of Jews since the massacre of Oct 7th:

“One disturbing aspect of the surge in antisemitic violence since October 7 has received relatively little attention: Western governments say that Iran and Iranian-backed organizations have been behind a series of plots and attacks against Jewish and Israeli targets across Europe, North America and Australia.” MORE
    https://reason.com/volokh/2026/09/17/irans-expanding-campaign-against-jewish-targets-outside-israel/

Bernstein concludes, in part: “ Thus, amid the much broader increase in antisemitic violence since October 7, Western authorities have identified something more specific: a multinational Iranian and Iranian-proxy campaign targeting Jews and Jewish institutions, often using local criminals and other intermediaries to obscure who is ultimately responsible.”
