The Democrats may have realized that shutting the government down isn’t really their best gambit
Or rather – at least one Democrat named Fetterman may have realized it. The GOP needs eight, however:
Shut the government down, plunge the country into chaos, risk a recession
or
Exchange cloture for a 30 day CR that 100% fails.
The House GOP CR will then pass the Senate because it only needs 51 votes.
Total theater is neither honest with constituents nor a winning argument.
One of the responses at X: “I’m old enough to remember the Democrat outrage about a potential government shutdown last year.”
And the year before that, and the year before that, and …
Here are the guys at the Ruthless podcast discussing the continuing resolution. If you’ve never listened to them, I suggest you do. IMHO they’re both knowledgeable and entertaining; they always seem to be having a good time. I’ve selected a 5-minute segment:
As seen elsewhere on the internet:
Shut the government down? DON’T THREATEN ME WITH A GOOD TIME!
It certainly seems as if the current crop of Democrat House members aren’t exactly deep strategists or possess a great deal of intellectual heft as it were. In the past they’ve often excelled at creating fear, uncertainty, and doubt in a large part of the populace over government shutdowns. Working hand-in-glove with the Legacy Media, they would paint a picture of grandma’s not getting their Social Security checks and Veterans losing healthcare due to mean’ol Republicans being obstinate and in the pockets of “fat-cat billionaires” and other such boogymen. But this time, the shoes on the other foot and the trust and influence of the Legacy media has been greatly diminished. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.
This is a continuation of the Democrat budget. The Republicans dug deep and managed to cut $13 billion out of the non-defense spending, but added $8 billion back to defense spending, leaving a massive $5 billion in cuts from a $1.6 trillion continuing resolution, leaving us with a budget deficit likely higher than the two proceeding years.
Doesn’t give much confidence that the Reps are any better than the Dems and are fine with put us in chains with debt.
Was the hypocrisy of opposing massive spending too much even for Democrats? I know, stupid question.
It is not at all clear to me what the downside of a government shutdown might be.
Some conservative commenters on X have said that they think a shutdown is fine; it would put the OMB director in charge of everything. Oh, Brer Fox, whatever you do, don’t throw me in the briar patch!
Schumer caved.
They must have the paddles ready, in case he goes into cardiac arrest.
Trump has humiliated him. Not sure though if Chuck can hate Trump more.
