Fascinating. Who came up with this particular Olympic sport? An offshoot of floor exercise in female gymnastics, I imagine, but why add the volley ball? Was there some committee sitting around thinking about ways to enhance the difficulty or was this the result of a single “Eureka!” moment?
An incredible performance. I trust she won a gold medal.
This might be considered a future Olympic sport…of sorts…though I have no idea how it might be judged…
Hello Neo – it’s a YouTube clip for you that someone else pointed out to me. “Staying Alive” sung as a madrigal. I enjoyed it a lot; maybe you will too.
Thanks for your great blog with its mix of serious, light, and artistically interesting stuff.
The leftys I follow now claiming the sinking of the Iranian warship off of Sri Lanka is a war crime as it was unarmed and the US sub didn’t help rescue survivors. I keep being amazed at how these people mentally twist themselves into knots with zero self awareness.
Perhaps you’ll find yourself speaking to a young person trying to understand all this – someone who has no memory of 1979. This editorial in the Jerusalem Post sums it all up very well.
There is a bill currently being worked thru the Senate which is advertised as addressing the housing affordability crisis. Summary and discussion here:
There is a bill currently being worked thru the Senate which is advertised as addressing the housing affordability crisis. Summary and discussion here:
==
(1) There is no crisis.
==
(2) Federal policy, properly conceived, might have knock-on effects on housing markets. The source of such effects: the immigration regime, interest rates as influenced by monetary policy, lending practices as influenced by federal standards of soundness in banking, and health and safety regulations on manufactured housing and on building materials traded across state lines. All of these might be conscious of the effects of policy prescriptions on housing markets, but that would not be the intent of the policy.
==
(3) There are other activities in which the federal government currently engages which influence housing markets. The federal government should stop doing these things. That would mean an end to tax preferences, and end to subsidies, and an end to regulatory intrusions apart from those noted above.
==
(4) The object of state law in re the housing market should be to promote health and safety (through building and fire codes), to promote precision and transparency in property ownership and in transactions between buyer and seller and between landlord and tenant, and to ensure tax burdens on real property are allocated in a salutary fashion.
==
(5) The object of local land use planning and local adaptations of building codes should be containing loads on public works, promoting health and safety, and containing externalities which arise from how owners use their property. Some dicta: (1) the government should not enforce on current property holders the wishes of previous holders bar those arising from the operations of estate, powers, and trust law; (2) the government may debar certain ancillary charges in pursuit of transparency, but it must never regulate rents bar enforcing the provisions of a lease during its term of operation and requiring due notice of changes in terms; (3) the processes necessary to effect an eviction should not take more than about 70 days to implement; (4) collusion by landlords should invariably be debarred by law; (5) landlords should have plenary discretion over to whom they rent; (6) certain housing types might be limited to zones within a metropolis where standardized tax abatements are in effect (e.g. flop houses, group homes, halfway houses, boarding houses, SRO hotels, apartments with shared kitches); (7) the farther from the peak land value intersection is a property, the stricter may be the height limits on commercial thoroughfares and residential thoroughfares; (8) categorial minima on lot sizes and categorial restrictions on increasing density of settlement on a property are invalid.
==
(6) Town properties should be assessed biennially and all private property holders should face the same levy rate on assessed valuation from a given taxing authority unless the property is located in a designated slum zone.
==
(7) Rural properties should be partitioned and the different components of the property assessed according to different principles. The residential or business portion should be assessed at least once every six years according to posited resale value. Arable land, pasture, and woodland should be assigned conventional values derived from statewide data on the ratio of crop revenues, cattle and dairy revenues, and timber revenues per acre of arable land, pasture, and woodland.
==
(8) Philanthropic corporations (bar club service providers) should receive from the state treasury full re-imbursement for their property tax payments to local government.
==
(9) Taxing authorities whose jurisdiction intersects with slum zones should have a staggered levy rate withing their jurisdiction: a standard rate, 1/2 the standard rate for census block groups with a per capita income below a certain threshold and 0% for the census bloc groups with the lowest levels of per capita income.
==
(10) Municipalities, school districts, and miscellaneous special district authorities which intersect with slum zones should be permitted to enact a capped value-added tax to be collected by the county for them to make up for revenue losses from restrictions on property tax collection authority.
==
(11) Municipalities should be financed in part by an unrestricted grant from the county government. The value of each municipality’s grant should be positively correlated with resident population and inversely correlated with per capita income.
==
(12) Counties and school districts should be in part financed by a like grant from the state treasury. Each county’s grant should be positively correlated with population and inversely correlated with per capita income. Each school districts should be inversely correlated with per capita income and positively correlated with resident population and with the ratio of school age youth to the remainder of the population.
Very impressive gymnast / gymnist!!
(… That’s an interesting word. I understand it’s from “gymnastics”, but still thought “gymnist” might be correct.
Apparently not. Lol.)
Phew, can she shoot 3’s?
Hello. I had an idea that might address the problems that seem to be arising with bases in the UK and Spain by US forces of late. This is kind of tongue-in-cheek.
If we now seriously want to craft for ourselves a Near Eastern empire and partly relieve ourselves of having to resort to such bases on the western periphery of Europe, what about we take over northern Cyprus? Aside from supporting our ‘oversight’ of the eastern Mediterranean and related regions, we could thereby address one or two certain other thorny problems in addition. Besides, even more countries refuse formal recognition to the Northern Cypriot ‘entity’ than do so to the Israeli claim to Judea and Samaria, potentially; so we should be on relatively firmer diplomatic ground in comparison (if that consideration even matters at this point in the game).
Astonishing, eye-opening athleticism.

Another indication, in case you needed one, that schools in this country are run by the sort of people who should never be granted authority over others. (And, yes, the unpleasantness and stupidity of this pair has a distinctly feminine cast).
