Merry Christmas! — 27 Comments

  1. This morning on a radio show about Christmas music the singer intro’d “Christmas time is here” from A Charlie Brown Christmas. He said that CBS hated the movie but the producer, Lee Mendolson, stood up for it. He was even able to keep in Linus reciting the Christmas story from the Bible.

It’s a good movie well written with great music by Vince Guaraldi. It turns out that Mendolson wrote the lyrics to “Christmas Time is here”.

  2. @ Bob Wilson > I had heard that story before, and am very grateful that the producer stood his ground. The show may be the most successful at melding the sacred and secular aspect of Christmas (after all, Jesus is the Reason for the Season — or at least He used to be recognized that way).

Peanuts was a great way to introduce kids to friendship, morality at a kid level, Christianity (with a very light hand), and humor.
I posted some cartoons on the 12/23 thread, and end with a picture of the Gang dancing on the stage of their Christmas play.

It’s officially Christmas here, and I must go to bed so as not to risk collapsing the Santa Claus Wave Function (h/t Powerline).

Bonus, because Peanuts is a Christmas tradition.

Merry Christmas to all, and God bless us every one!

  3. For the record, I am visiting here with my blog friends, instead of watchin my local grand-daughter open presents, because AesopSpouse and I both woke up sick this morning, and decided we wouldn’t share that particular gift for Christmas.
We’re having an after-New-Year gathering of other family, so will make up for missed holiday cheer then.

  4. My wife and I are recovering from an illness and injury so we are not with family this year. Blog friends are here and that is what counts. Merry Christmas.

  5. All you sickies, get better soon! I saw my granddaughter on FaceTime this morning. I hope you can also see your loved ones, if not hug them, today. I am supervising my younger daughter in cutting out and sewing a pattern for a business-suitable jacket for her. We will have to alter the pattern in several areas, as she is even taller than I am. Wish us luck.

  6. Merry Christmas, Neo (yeah, I know) and commenters!
BTW: Sarah Huckabee Sanders should be on the short list for Trump’s VP pick. Have commented on this elsewhere on this awesome blog.

  7. @windbag: That second is grimly funny.

When I was young, one of our guys rolled his car about a million times and wound up in a coma. Some of us took turns sitting with him.

Robbie was there when Joe woke up. Big, very nice guy. Joe looked around until he found Robbie and after he focused he said “I wish it was you.”

Heh. Opposite direction for the dark dart.

  8. For those of you with family tonight, I am so very glad for you. Enjoy and be happy.

    Hoo dee ho

  9. An interesting backstory to that song- “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” was based on a poem written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow on Christmas Day in 1863 during the American Civil War. His wife had been burned to death in a fire a couple of years earlier and later he learned that his oldest son who had joined the Union army against his will had been seriously wounded in battle. Hence the despairing line “ hate is strong and mocks the song of peace on earth, good will to men”. Yet it ends with the hopeful “God is dead nor doth he sleep with peace on earth good will to men.” A beautiful and hopeful song.

Wishing a happy and blessed Christmas to everyone!

  10. Well I seem to be the last (it’s only 8:35pm here). So,

Merry Christmas to All and to All a Good Night!

  11. Picking up some music links from David Foster’s post (in the open thread) and adding a few more.

  12. huxley > tastes in music should never be apologized for. Our boys really liked Enya for her Celtic sound, and I got used to her voice.

  13. So far today I have listened to classic carols on hammered dulcimer (some players are better than others), an album of Renaissance music not necessarily Christmas-related, and am now in an album of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Ballet.
