Cornhead reports… — 25 Comments

  1. Interesting that she drew a crowd. Maybe every Democrat will benefit from the base’s insanity.

I have quit commenting at Powerline because the Disqus thing won’t accept me unless I use Google Chrome and I am avoiding Google as much as possible.

  2. Sure they grow corn in the CB, Omaha area. Corn crops fade out somewhere west of Lincoln NE. Sorry if your point was too oblique for me.

  3. Completely agree with Cornhead that “Elizabeth Warren may be even less likable than Hillary Clinton and that is saying something.” A bit scary that his guest at the event “liked how Warren answered questions. She also liked Warren for appearing not to think too highly of herself”.

  4. I read that earlier, and didn’t realize it was Cornhead! I followed his campaign reports in 2016 with interest. I fear that his apolitical guest may have been Mrs. Cornhead, which may cause a few discussions as the campaign proceeds.

I don’t think Warren’s charisma will extend beyond the already-true-believers of the hard left.

  5. One thing Hillary had going for her was the sense that it was somehow ‘owed’ to her for her many years on the scene and I think that was a major reason she was nominated and a major reason she lost. That sense of entitlement was palpable with her.

The left doesn’t feel that for Warren which will make it unlikely that she will be able to hold off the other candidates that more fit the left’s identity boxes.

The City of Council Bluffs has a population density of 1,500 persons per sq. mile. I don’t think there are many cornfields there.

As for Pottawatamie County, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reports that farm income accounts for 1% of total personal income and about 9% of proprietors income. Proprietors account for shy of 20% of the local workforce, so you might guess farm proprietors are < 2% of the workforce, supplemented with wage labor

As for land use, the state extension service hasn't assessed crop acreages in a while. At the last assessment it was 40% corn, 35% soybeans, 20% hay, and 3% alfalfa and oats.

  7. Griffin, disagree with you about Hillary vs. Warren. I would think the left looks at Warren as more of a “true believer” than HRC. The hard left never quite trusted the Clintons, that is part of why she lost to Obama in 2008.

I’m not quite as dismissive of her candidacy as some. Yes she has many weaknesses but as noted she has leftist cred and checks off an important identity box. While nearly all Dems have a lot of general TDS, I suspect many Dem women are still specifically upset that they were denied the “First Woman President” they thought they were owed in 2016.

  8. FOAF,

But the difference is there are going to be other women that check more boxes like Kamala Harris. When you are obsessed with this crap why go halfway when you can have a black woman and she starts with less baggage (that they have been forced to report on).

I just don’t think it will be so obvious who the choice will be this time.

And the Native American thing is indefensible.

  9. Warren’s Native American lies, to get hired at Harvard, are likely to be mentioned as the Asians who are suing Harvard for discrimination continue to progress in the courts.

Reps need to get better at lawfare, in general; both on defense and to be using Dem supported laws against Dem law-breakers.

    This.
As long as we have the laws, we might as well use them — then get the worst of them repealed ASAP (although lawfare can become an addiction).
Would this be the opposite of More’s “cutting down all the laws of England to get at the Devil”?

  11. As I said in an earlier topic, I don’t discount Warren because David Axelrod seems to be shilling for her which I interpret as possible support from the Obama machine.

Thinking about it from Obama’s perspective, I can only imagine him supporting Warren or Kamala Harris. Beto might do if Warren and Harris fell by the wayside early, but otherwise who else would Obama get behind?

Obama is still a powerful figure in the Democratic Party and he is intent on shaping the party’s future. Candidates visit to kiss his ring.

  12. Griffin, you might be right about Harris. A lot of people would like her to be the “female Obama”, and if the press promotes her the way they did Obama while pointedly overlooking her shortcomings she could get nominated. But that hasn’t happened yet. Definitely agree “it’s not obvious” who will get nominated, it’s still very early and I don’t want to overpromote Warren. However I think her two basic strengths *with the Dem base* – woman and leftist cred – are significant and don’t count her out yet.

Even the “Native American thing”, I’m not sure it hurts her with the Dem base as much as it obviously does with us. Many of them I suspect still look at it as “woman unfairly attacked by racist Trump”. Sounds crazy but look who we are talking about.

It makes her look ridiculous, which injures her with swing voters and some of the media. The Democratic base would vote for her anyway in a general election, but we’re talking about primaries and caucuses here. She doesn’t have immunity against other Democrats and a history of pilfering diversity Pokemon points might hack off certain people.

Nominating Beto would be a fine expression of the essential shallowness of the Democratic Party’s culture (as nominating BO was a fine expression thereof). Harris has a sinister vibe that Warren lacks.

  14. When all is said and done, Warren should have stumped at Wounded Knee.

And I think that we have a ticket for 2020: Harris-Warren (or Warren-Harris, for all the difference it makes).

Yep, H-W (or W-H) in 2020: Vision Now and Forever!

  15. Don’t know what, if anything, it indicates about Obama’s preferred candidate, but Dan Pfeiffer, one of Obama’s closest advisors, is very enthusiastic about Beto and wrote a piece on him on November 28th: “The Case for Beto O’Rourke”

And Mr. Pfeiffer has not one blessed thing to say about Beto’s accomplishments, his preparation for the office, his understanding of public policy, his ideology, his character. It’s all “Hey, Democrats, we can really sell the Spam in this can. Boo Yah!”

The one agreeable thing about Beto is that his background is in small business. I’ll be looking forward to the people who derided George W. Bush talking up Beto.

  16. I guess it was too oblique. No they don’t grow corn on main street. Corn represents 40% of crops on these places they call farms. Sounds about right.

  17. “Mr. Pfeiffer has not one blessed thing to say about Beto’s accomplishments, his preparation for the office, his understanding of public policy, his ideology, his character.”

They are equivalent to Obama’s in 2008. i. e. zero.

  18. Ann: Thanks for the link. That’s as good a clue as the Axelrod article on Warren.

Beto is the most similar candidate to Obama in terms of charisma. I wonder if he’s sufficiently leftist for Obama, as well as the white-male problem.

I’ve got my eye on Obama. He’s not walking away like GWB. He will remain a force for some time to come. I imagine he and Michelle will fill Bill and Hill’s shoes.

  19. I’ve got my eye on Obama. He’s not walking away like GWB.

GWB had a life apart from politics. Business, sports, historical study, and, in retirement, studio art. From 1968 to the present, perhaps 1/3 of his time was spent in politics.

In re Mooch: she supposedly wanted him to get out of the legislature. He was interviewed for the director’s job at the Joyce Foundation in 2000. He blew the interview, which was a disappointment for his wife. The smart money says Mooch has no interest in being Hill or Bill.

  20. Well, I wish Mooch would quit mooching off us*, and mooch off and go inhabit some other corner of the galaxy.

    … Obama’s annual presidential pension is $205,700 …

the current president requests funding from Congress for additional expenses related to former presidents. Those expenses vary widely, mainly because of differences in office space rental costs, per a report from the Congressional Research Service. For example, Jimmy Carter was appropriated $430,000 in fiscal year 2015, while George W. Bush received $1,098,000. Bush received $434,000 for office space that year, while Carter received $112,000.

Upon leaving office, Obama is set to receive less money in FPA funds than any other living president. While he did request an increase of $588,000 in FPA funding for 2017, only $359,000 of it was earmarked for himself—which includes his $205,700 pension, staff salaries, office space, etc.—and the other $229,000 will be distributed between the other four presidents.

Additional appropriations to help the president and his family “transition” to their new life….

I think this was evident in the 2000 election debates. Bush was always relaxed and winked at a friend during the middle of one debate. I always thought election was not the sole purpose of his life. Gore had no other life and had a psychotic reaction to losing. Tipper had had enough and took off.
