I’m going to say something nice about Michelle Obama’s gowns
Yes, I am, and don’t try to stop me.
I haven’t been paying a particle of attention to Michelle Obama for years. Long ago I noticed that her fashion sense was extremely variable, with probably an equal number of hits and misses, and the misses being pretty far off the mark. However, I was just idly surfing around the other day and noticed that a few of her gowns in the past two years have been lovely and quite flattering.
And really, I need a break from the primaries. Fashion forever! It must be fun to dress up so much. I cannot remember the last time I wore a full-length gown, although I had quite a few in my late teens and early twenties.
I’d have gone for a simpler necklace, but I like this gown, both color and cut:
Another winner (and yes, I know her expression here is a bit unfortunate, but this is about the dress):
The above dress reminds me of this one of Jackie Kennedy’s, which I recommended for Michelle back at the beginning of Obama’s presidency:
And here’s another elegant one, with a full skirt that is quite flattering for her:
after that walk up the stairs with the wives of europe, poof she woke up… probably yelled about that happening again…
This is completely off your topic, Neo, but it certainly relates to the pictures and to the majority of what we’ve been discussing.
We’d be dealing with President Romney’s reelection today if he hadn’t wimped out in that third debate. I thought he lost it, first in the Candy Crowley terrorism interruption — Romney should have stopped and made her look up and read the transcript out loud — and second when Obama ridiculed him over the size of the Navy and said (I paraphrase) he must be living in the days when we used bayonets on our rifles.
What Romney should have said was, “Well, Mr. President, you may not know this, but every rifle we issue today has a bayonet stud on it, and every soldier, sailor, Marine, and airman we issue a rifle has a bayonet for it – even your Presidential guards that you see every day.”
And as you can see from the pictures above, they still do.
P.S. I like the first two dresses, but not the full skirted gown — too much color contrast between the top and skirt, I think.
It’s funny because I remember way back in 2007/2008 when Obama was running for president. Michelle talked about how she was not into all that makeup and hair – she seemed very proud of that. In fact, she wore ZERO makeup back then. Her eyebrows were very ‘natural’ to put it nicely. How much she has changed.
Occasionally she wears a nice gown. Her everyday clothing, though, can hit the bizarre. She looks better with her upper half revealed and lower half hidden. Like many women in their 40s, they can carry that extra weight around the hips and thighs. She has always had nice arms/shoulders.
I think her 2008 self would be appalled at the feminizing when she seemed so proud of being ‘natural.’
It’s okay to say something nice about an adversary (for example, about Mrs. Obama’s gowns).
I had a supervisor about whom the less said the better, given his utter lack of people skills and personnel management skills. There was something about me that just wasn’t to his taste; these things happen. Anyway . . .
He was (and presumably still is ) an excellent technical writer.
Looks like an Oprah wannabe to me.
‘However, I was just idly surfing around the other day and noticed that a few of her gowns in the past two years have been lovely and quite flattering.’
That’s because she’s been getting her recent fashion advice from Donald Trump.
‘And really, I need a break from the primaries.’
Sorry.
They DO look nice.
She really does look nice in these dresses. Something about her expression so often….seen in picture #2…unpleasant.
Beautiful gowns. I love the lacy-looking top part of the last one. Not sure about that necklace with the first one, but I’m leaning toward it somehow working. And I think she looks gorgeous in all three.
Those dresses are lovely. Going by these, she has much better taste than at least half of the ladies at the Oscars the other night.
I like all three. A big improvement over that white, one-shouldered gown that she wore to the inaugural ball(s). That one was just too young on her. Maybe she has a better stylist these days.
She has been lauded as a fashion icon, but I think she has had at least as many misses as hits over the past 8 years.
I just think of how difficult it must be to have everything you wear, your hair, you facial expression, etc, dissected every time you step outside your door – lot of pressure to live in that kind of goldfish bowl and they have two teenagers still at home. I remember the press attacks on Nancy Reagan’s gowns and everything else, to include how she looked at her husband. I think all three look very lovely and flatter her. I also enjoyed the ballet posts, even though I know nothing about ballet.
Yuck.
“she has much better taste than at least half of the ladies at the Oscars the other night.”
Not a high bar.
libertybelle,
Agreed! I would personally not want to live in that fishbowl. But one of the many irritating things about Michelle Obama IMHO is that she sometimes complains about the fishbowl while obviously loving the spotlight on some level and taking advantage of the perks (designer clothing, expensive travel, etc. She dresses for the cameras (which I don’t fault her for) then affects an attitude of irritation about not being able to make an anonymous Target run.
So like Oscar fashion, MO’s fashion is fair game. Meow! 🙂
I like the last dress best. Her shoulders/neck area is just a tad too buff to pull off the shoulderless look. Her muscle definition make it look like her posture is poor, which it isn’t.
I have RBF Syndrome (Resting Bitch Face) and I think I see a fellow sufferer in the First Lady. Makes it tough to be in the fishbowl!

Speaking of First Ladies, here’s a nice tribute to Nancy Reagan.

I’ve always thought the Obamas are a very handsome couple. Michelle Obama is lovely, on the outside anyway, when she puts in even a little effort. Those Eurobroads can just step off. I’ve just never felt that was particularly relevant to much of anything and after the mountains of scorn, contempt, and flat out filth that was hurled at the Bushes, also a very handsome couple, and Palin for that matter, I am in no mood to be gracious. Also, this week brought back all those stories about Nancy Reagan and her “expensive designer gowns” which were supposedly so awful until Mrs. Obama started wearing expensive designer gowns. Now for the lecture about how Nancy didn’t declare them on her taxes. That was NOT the key issue at the time and, given the IRS’ antics, I don’t care.
stunning gowns that look terrific on her, bet they would pillory Anne Romney if she were wearing these !
These are nice, particularly the purpose one. She has worn some dreadful ones. First inaugural, the one that looked like it had cotton balls glued on it springs to mind. A quick hop, skip, and jump through the tomandlorenzo.com archives reveal that Mrs. Obama looks best when she bares her shoulders and stands up very straight. That blue Marchesa (that’s what TLo said) was ruined by her poor posture at the moment of that shot. Her daywear is better if it is a darker color that hides any waistline seam, and she should never ever ever ever wear a belt as it emphasizes how short-waisted she is.
Yes, I like fashion blogs, so sue me. Anyway, a Democrat first lady gets endless freebies from Democrat fashion designers. If there are any Republican fashion designers, we never saw a sign of them when W was in office – personally, I don’t think they exist. So it’s nice to have high-fashion handed to you on a silver platter. It’s the only thing that ever makes that dreadful woman look presentable.
Yeah, that “boob-belt” just HAS to go. VERY unflattering.
