Well, the weather report may have been in error for New York City…
…but it’s been spot on for much of New England.
Boston has already gotten almost 2 feet, for example, and it’s not over yet. Airports are closed. Nantucket is without power, as is much of the Boston south shore, and plenty of other New England areas are experiencing the same thing.
I still have power (for now). But looking out the window I see whiteout, high winds and snow coming down hard, as it’s been since some time in the wee hours of the morning—although “down” isn’t quite the word because the snow’s blowing at a sharp angle. It’s hard to tell how much snow we have because of drifts, but it’s very substantial.
Your intrepid blogger is cozy and warm, however. For now, for now…

We’ve got it pretty tough here, too. It’s partly cloudy, and won’t hit 40’s, or at least not the 50’s. Might get rain, too. Been a tough year here. *Snoopy dance*
I just checked the news station out of Manchester NH and was heartened to see there are no reports of tragedies thus far. So, I will take these less than perfect models over no model, at all.
Glad to learn you still have electrons flowing. I’ve been through many Iowa blizzards and the raw power of the weather is truly awesome. Stay snug and warm.

Yeah, I agree, let’s cease with the critique on models. I’ve seen all the models in Sport’s Illustrated recent, Swimsuit Edition, and they may be, “less-than-perfect”, but I’d take any one of ’em…
here in So NH it s still stubbornly snowing, not much wind though so little chance of a power outage.
I am at a large window with a grand out door view,
my shrubbery has taken on rather unique looks,
each spire of a rhododendron is encased in snow, small shrubs have thoroughly vanished !!!
But it is cozy & warm here with a great crackle from
the logs tossed on the fire. Kitty loves the warm ottoman & my feet are stretched out so I am happy !
Bit of a scandal brewing in New York City related to the storm that missed us.
Andrew Cuomo issued an edict yesterday that shut down the subways by 11:00.
But then we get this mind-blowing information:
“Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s move to shut off the city’s subway system overnight on Monday ahead of an anticipated blizzard came as a surprise to transit workers and runs against common sense, because the trains need to move as part of keeping the tracks clear and will be running all night anyway, according to a transit insider.
“The governor’s 6:00 pm announcement that subway and bus service would be halted completely at 11 pm blindsided the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Incident Command Center, where workers first heard about it on the news, said the source, who lacks authorization to speak about internal matters and asked to remain anonymous.
“The claim that trains were running empty appeared to be confirmed by the NYC Subway Time app for Android, which says it uses real-time data provided by the Transportation Authority.
“Around midnight, the app showed activity in both directions on all train lines in the city. The only exceptions were Manhattan’s 42nd Street Shuttle and the B and C trains, which do not run at night.”
So WHY did Andy keep the people off the trains? Cui bono?

Also baffling: why didn’t anyone in NYC push back or protest this dangerous idiocy?
There’s one someone heartening (small) thing: some of our libby friends on Faceplant are actually complaining about government “nanny-statism,” as in mayor Bill de Bolshevik’s decision to close the parks.
That’s right: close NYC’s parks. Because heaven forbid that any of the little kiddies would get hurt doing dangerous things like, you know, sledding in the snow.
God, I detest these people. Along with everything else, they’re such joy-killers.
Where I live, we get around twenty feet of snow every winter. The local snowplow driver is my hero. He even wears a cowboy hat.
Glad your power stayed on. I lived in Rhode Island and Boston for about 5 years (college and a year after) and having the power go out during bad weather sucks. Living in the sleeping bag is not fun. (It does bring perspective, though. We have it so good compared to back in the day!)

Washington and Philly Sports clubs are normal hours, New York area has a couple closed. But, man, look at the Boston Sports Clubs! Most are closed. It takes a lot for them to close as there is little more angry than diehard gym rats denied access to the gym.

Oh, well. Most people don’t want to know about the inherent uncertainty and limits of our perception, natural and enhanced.
It is supposed to be 66 here today, but I would rather have the snow. Maybe not two feet of it, but snow combined with a warm house and hot chocolate would make for a very satisfying day.
You, American citizen, newer cease to surprize me. It almost unbelievable that after warning not to drive cars almost everybody obey! This level of law-abiding (not only by law, but just by recommendation from authority) can be even dangerous for civilization survival.
