The best thing to do if you’re in charge of the discussion is to impose a blanket ban on the race card. However, even if you’re not in charge (the MSM isn’t bothering to hide their political leanings anymore), there are still ways of neutralizing the race card.
My favorite tactic would be to lob the race card back at them so as to make it ineffective through overload, something like a Denial Of Service attack. For example, if they suggest a new welfare policy, say “That’s racist!”; if they suggest disarming the law-abiding populace, tell them it’s racist; or any Leftist plan of theirs. Then, if they ask why it’s racist, give them yet another dose of their medicine by telling them their “denials of racism” are “proof of guilt.”
As Mike said, there’s no point pretending argument and reason could persuade them, so the smart way to defuse the race card is by joining ’em until the noise level is so high that their signals are jammed beyond all efficacy.
Conservatives need to be a little more adaptive to the modern battleground and its combat realities.

In Virginia, if I were going to drive to areas I was not sure about, I took advantage of my CCW permit, and had a firearm under the seat. It did make me feel more secure. Of course I could carry into areas where I would most likely need it; e.g. Washington, DC or Prince Georges County, Maryland. In California, I don’t have that option at all. I wonder if I went to the Sheriff and said I feared violence because I am a little old white minority in our County, it would help? (BTW, the murder rate in LA and surrounding counties is horrendous. I guess it is just over shadowed by other areas. Either that or no one is wiling to collate and publish the stats.)

Chicago dyes a river green and the city of Boston gets drunk every St Patrick’s day in celebration of their residents’ Irish heritage; towns across the Texas Hill Country have annual festivals celebrating their German and Central European heritage (and great sausage!); Americans of Polish and French descent have similar celebrations, which often highlight the prominent roles of some Poles and Frenchmen in the American Revolution. There are also German and Romance and Scandinavian studies programs at many American universities, as well as scholarships for American students of these and other European heritages.
There is no loud or widespread objection to this. Opportunities for and encouragement of Americans of European descent to express pride in their heritage are not lacking.
My objection, which I’ll try to express more fully after sleep, is specifically to the notion of “white pride” that rikl danced around nicely in comments above. There’s a reason that notion, specifically, leaves a bad taste in the mouths of many Americans.
Also, to another of rikl’s (and others’, it seems…) more contentious points, it’s just fantasy to reduce the reasons millions of white people voted for Obama to an unconscious self-hatred or guilt.

Thanks for pointing this out. They have found the accusation of racism useful because it seems, in their eyes at least, to put them on the moral high ground. Ask anyone who accuses you of racism if he/she is in favor of affirmative action. When they say they favor affirmative action, you can point out to them that it is they who are racist. Being in favor of affirmative action for blacks is to believe that blacks are incapable of achieving anything on their own. It makes blacks second class citizens. It treats them as children who can’t ever grow up. It is prejudice in its most extreme form. When we have all kinds of examples of blacks who have succeeded on their own merits, it puts the lie to the shibboleth that they can’t succeed unless given an everlasting hand up.
No, racism is a handy tool of trying to stand on the high moral ground. Well, we can’t let them use it anymore. The communists/progressives/statists have no moral high ground to stand on. None! I read Robert Oculus book that was recommended by rickl. Interesting book. I certainly don’t agree with everything that he says. He paints ethnic groups with a broad brush, which I believe leads to fallacies. IMO, the value of the book lies in the fact that it shows just how much we have been taught, carefully taught, to feel guilty because our mostly white ancestors have achieved a very successful country that has been, up until the last 50 years, more free, both politically and economically, than any country in history. Though it isn’t perfect, it is certainly nothing to be ashamed of. Yet we are being told to be ashamed. Don’t let them get away with it.

I’ve read Robert Oculus’s posts when he first posted on American Digest, and I just downloaded the book. I too don’t agree with everything written, but any Prog who seizes upon Oculus’s ideas as “proof” of the right wing’s “inherent racism” is, as usual, missing the point completely. The point is that, through aggressive, unapologetic displays of racism by American non-whites in the recent years, American whites have been forced to re-evaluate their position and stand up for their own interests just a little bit. Simply, actions have consequences. The Progressives, so acutely “aware” of this when it comes to blaming Western colonialism for Islamic imperialist aggression, all of a sudden think a group should accept blow after blow indefinitely, contritely and cheerfully. Ah, the classic denial of selective reality attack based on the premise that a defensive or offensive position can be neutralized with a single failure. If you look at the murder statistics, blacks commit about 50% of all murders and 90% of those murders are other blacks. Black on black crime is rampant, black on white crime is common and white on black crime is rare. Do a search on “the color of crime”.
