  1. Eric Kaufmann writing in Tablet:

The encampments increased Jewish self-censorship while reducing it for conservatives. . . . Why would Jewish elite students feel more inhibited at precisely the time conservative students feel freer? The main reason seems to be that student-led cancel culture pivoted from focusing on race and gender to foregrounding Israel-Palestine. . . . This took heat off conservative students and placed it on Jews. . . .

One result of the left’s pivot to Israel-Palestine has been to alienate many Jewish students from the far left, and, to a lesser degree, from the left in general. . . . When the encampments went up on elite campuses, Jewish students abandoned the far left in droves. The share of Jewish Ivy League students who identify as “very liberal” on a 7-point ideology scale declined from 40% before the encampments to 13% after they appeared. The proportion of “strong Democrats” tanked from 37% to 14% while the Republican share rose from 12% to 18%. Ivy League Jews went from being well to the left of the median Ivy League student to leaning right of the average.

  2. That’s a sad story, Selfy. Thinking that only leftists involve themselves in scams is an error. When doing business or investing money, always look for reliable and unbiased data. I have a neighbor, a single woman, who has been scammed by people working on her house. She chooses contractors because they’re Christian, which for her means evangelicals. We keep telling her to choose contractors who do good work. Sharing her faith would be a plus, but business is business.

  3. RE: The unimpressive head of the Federal Reserve

I recently saw a short clip of President Trump and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, talking to the Press after touring the billion dollar plus, cost overrun Federal Reserve remodeling project, and I was just not impressed by Powell, who seems like a mouse of a man.

When you have a picture, in your mind, of the type of man who you would think was at the head of a major, powerful Federal Agency, it’s of a very forceful and impressive man, a “man of many parts.”

Perhaps I am wrong, but those impressive qualities were not what I saw in how Powell presented himself, or in his demeanor.*

  4. Ten seconds of that video and I’m back to 1977, sitting in a packed theater beside my sweetheart. I have on my brand new Christmas boots – black, high heels. My black and cream plaid midi-skirt and cream cowl neck sweater. It’s cold outside but pretty sure my coat’s in the car. I wanted to look thin and cute for my date. Nineteen-year-old girls would rather be cold than wear a coat. We’ve been married now for 42 years…..
Is this kind of recall a woman-thing? Genetic??

    Kate:

A good friend I knew from parochial school later told me the story of his devout Christian mother who had moved from Catholicism to the pentecostal variety. There was an older gentleman who showed up at her church group, who testified that he had been given a divine mission to help widows manage their assets.

Well. You can guess how that worked out. She lost her house.

However, she was Italian. She had a brother in the mafia and two sons who were mafia-adjacent. They broke the guy’s legs and got most of her money back.

I’m not quite sure what the moral of this story is. I find myself cheering for the mafia.

  6. huxley, me too (cheering for the guys who got their relative’s money back from the scammer).

  7. I remember watching one of the Democratic Conventions maybe 20 years ago, when they had Bill Clinton make a grand entrance using similar cinematographic techniques to the opening to Saturday Night Fever. It was after BC had left office, maybe when Obama was nominated? They were clearly trying to make Clinton look like a conquering hero, but it reminded me of the sequence that Neo posted- Clinton as the one delivering the goods to his customers.
I remember thinking that BC might have been carrying a gallon of paint as he entered. Paint is a lot more expensive now.

  8. RE: King’s College Professor of Modern War David Betz, on what he sees as the coming Civil War in Britain—a long, detailed, and interesting examination of the key factors which make him think that Civil War is coming to the UK, and his analysis.*

  9. Snow on Pine @ 9:35, re: civil war in Britain.

I was posted to London from 2008-2010, and predicted at that time that in 25 year or less the UK would be completely Dhimmified under a Leftist/Jihadist regime, or in a state of civil war. One could see it brewing then, and in the last 15 years it has gotten exponentially worse.

  10. Neo, I never saw the movie, and was never a disco fan, but that was a great song. And that was a great intro, enough to make me want to watch the movie now.

Good story. I also have some Mafia stories, which I will not tell, but will tell one of possible mafia connection. The shadow of the Mafia was, I suspect, in the reaction of a family friend to Geraldine Ferraro. The friend was of Italian parentage, who didn’t speak English until she started grade school. She didn’t like Geraldine Ferraro, the 1984 Demo vice-presidential candidate. Geraldine was a mafia princess, which I believe wasn’t public knowledge at the time of the election. There must have been something in the way that Geraldine Ferraro carried herself that awakened our friend’s suspicions. Our friend’s father was an entrepreneur/inventor who owned a successful business—which is still going today. I wonder if her father had to pay the Mafia some protection money to keep his business safe.

  12. If you want to see TDS , just read the comments in this Yahoo News article about RFK getting mercury banned from the last vaccines that still were using it as a preservative. ( Only a small fraction of vaccines were still using it.)
I don’t know if this compound of mercury is really dangerous or not. But apparently there are people who are allergic to it. What I am interested in is the reactions in the comments. TDS on full display.
I do suspect that if anyone besides the Trump administration had banned this, many of these people would have had no comment or even cheered the ban.

  13. Telemachus–Prof. Betz, for all his stated reluctance to be in the public eye, is suddenly all over Youtube, giving several interviews laying out the reasons/factors leading to his conclusion that the UK is headed for some type of Civil War/insurgency, and that the “tipping point” leading to such a conflict has very likely already been passed.

It appears that, however reluctantly, he feels it his duty to sound the alarm.

What is so infuriating and sad is that this situation was an unforced error, that the deliberate decisions and policies of the ruling class brought this on the UK, and it didn’t have to be.

  14. For anyone who might have thought that the Sydney Sweeney genes/jeans ad was over the top, take a look at this ad from 1980 with Brooke Shields discussing genetics while very carefully sliding into a pair of Calvin Klein jeans. (h/t Steve Hayward, Political Questions)

  15. RE: The current state of the UK and the coming likely Civil War.

You would think that anyone with an ounce of sense could/would see that introducing hundreds of thousands of foreigners—many of them raised in cultures inherently hostile to then existing English culture and religion, and very likely to resist assimilation—would create immense and negative problems for native Englishmen, and had a fairly high chance of provoking armed conflict and societal breakdown.

Thus, the question must be asked, were the decisions leading to the present situation just the decisions of bunch of uninformed, idiotic, and careless, ideologically driven leaders, or, were these decisions made with full knowledge of their likely effect i.e. the very likely destruction of traditional English society and armed conflict?

Were there no “leaders” who were thinking of the long term consequences of their decisions?

So, stupidity , deliberate sabotage, or a combination of both?

  16. P.S.—In any case, when the dust finally settles, whatever is left standing will, very likely, bear little resemblance to the Merry Old England of tradition and fond memory.

  17. P.S.S.—I might add that many of the factors Prof. Beth sees at work in the UK leading to a likely Civil War are also at work here in the U.S.

Things like distrust of our government and other public institutions, the devolution from a high trust to a low trust society, the emergence of tribalism, etc.

  18. I for one am sick of the word “iconic”. I’d like to see it banned unless the context is Byzantine religious art.

And I’m also tire of those who pick one of many candidates as “the most”. Just last night TCM showed the Sound of Music. And how about 2001? Or Rocky? Pinocchio? High Noon? There are very many.

  19. Probably the prophetic Feet of clay and iron. Two peoples that will not mix well….One foot attached to the leg that appears to represent the Western Roman Empire and one attached to the leg that appears to represent the Eastern Roman Empire….it’s in the O.T. book of Daniel…I hope the British can break free. But how ? They don’t even have guns.

  20. I was surprised it was the first time they showed that film, they followed up with the last station about Tolstoy, who was the same age, as Christopher Plummer when he filmed it,
with Helen Mirren who is of Russian extraction, as his wife, how accurate the mannerisms of late 19th Century Russia were, ymmv its apparently based on Jay Parini’s novel which was sourced from Bulgakov the McAvoy character,

  21. @Kate, I do like the Shields commercial somewhat more – more scientifically thorough and… well-rounded, so to speak. (“Selective mating”… wow! LOL)

@Eeyore, we would then be speaking of “iconographic” matters. As it happens, we’re in the process of cleaning a certain set of icons that have been in place at our parish since 1938 and, we think, have not been cleaned up since then. Granted, they’re not in a very accessible position. And since this is an open thread, I’ll furthermore mention that the fresco iconography at St. Sophia’s in Albany and the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God parish on Sand Creek Rd. is very edifying in both places.

  23. PBS, who makes free, [educational + art] TV shows, has been getting Federal Government funds, to make its TV shows.

Recently- The Federal Government has cut [most of?] its funding to PBS.

During 2024 and 2025, did PBS try to negotiate with the Government, to keep PBS’ funding from being cut?

  24. In the war in Gaza- Hamas has said [it will not disarm, unless: 1] a nation named Palestine is created, and 2] the city of Jerusalem is made the capital city of Palestine.

I think that this plan will not happen.

As I understand it- Jerusalem is an important city to Israel, and I think that- Israel’s Government sees Jerusalem as- an important, religious city.

I think that this plan will not happen.
