  1. I have degrees in History. My Undergrad Advisor was a English Historian so I took a lot of English History. I was/am aware of the Guilds but not a lot about the huts and bolts. So I found this very interesting. She kind of glossed over the fact the City of London is just One Square Mile. The Black Death had a great effect on the Guilds I would imagine. It was probably easier to join because so many members died.

  2. Evidently Harvard is standing by their plagiarizing president. In a way this could be viewed as a good thing since it will dispel any illusions about the true state of Harvard and more broadly higher education in this country. People need to understand in no uncertain terms what they are truly funding when they donate to such institutions, and what sort of (mal)education their children will recieve if they matriculate.

Calls for genocide made by members of a favored group against disfavored groups are not only acceptable, but encouraged.

Plagiarism is acceptable as long as the plageriser is a member of a favored group.

It is now clear that these are precepts that Harvard University shamelessly stands for.

  3. they have received 45 billion in various subsidies, so why wouldnt they continue on their path, by the way thats how much our government has given Hamas

  4. The next woke trend coming down the pike in education is changing STEM to STEAM- the A stands for “Arts.”

There are no wrong answers in the Arts, so now everyone can play.
    Equity!

  5. Remeber back in the first few days after 10/7 when Hezbollah was issuing threats, and warning of a “wider war”? Everyone on team-Israel was genuinely afraid of having to fight on multiple fronts.

Well, this is the strongest evidence yet that the war in Gaza is going well:

WSJ Headline: Israel Warns Hezbollah to Pull Back Forces or Risk Wider War

    Love it! Go IDF!!

  6. My grandfather and an uncle attended Harvard. A family connection was a long-tenured eighteenth-century president of Harvard. These are no longer things to remember positively. The institution is not worthy of its former reputation.

  7. Dear Kate. Check out Charles Murray’s tome “Human Accomplishment” and be amazed, informed and astounded by our past.

  8. Well, this is the strongest evidence yet that the war in Gaza is going well:

    Mike Plaiss:

Yes, in military terms it does seem the Hamas War is going well for Israel. I read that the plan to flood the Gaza tunnels just awaits the GO signal:

Israel said to set up pumps in Gaza for flooding Hamas tunnels with seawater

Wall Street Journal says IDF has yet to decide on whether to go ahead with plan to flood terror group’s subterranean passages and hideaways, with opinions mixed in US…

One may certainly be appalled by the global support of demos against Israel. But I continue to believe that the Hamas massacre has reduced support rather than enhanced it.

For instance, it has resulted in the new rift between older and younger Democrats. And the resignation of UPenn president, Liz Magill.

  9. I don’t entirely trust this treatment. For one thing, 14th C is pretty late medieval. For another, they speak of, as characteristic of the Middle Ages, thing that were true as late as the early 19th C. But the real kicker is when she implies that serfs were owned. That is flat false. (I think it may have been true much later in Russia.) Serfs were neither free nor property. Of course, you cannot expect this kind of thing to be made today without a heavy dollop of Marx.

There is also an analogy to guilds which is not made here, in that in two fields they actually survived into the 20th C. Those are law and medicine. A guild worked very much as the Bar did. And that is why, until very recently, you didn’t see great congomerates of doctors and lawyers, instead of many independent ones.

  10. Eeyore, correct on English peasants. They were not legally tied to the land or to the landlord where they worked. By tradition and inclination they did often stay put, and of course social class defined them, like other people. Russian serfs were slaves until 1861.

  11. @ TJ > ” Check out Charles Murray’s tome “Human Accomplishment” and be amazed, informed and astounded by our past.”

I read that some years ago and totally recommend it.

  12. RE: The UFO Phenomenon–Just out, a very interesting, long interview of very accomplished Nobel prize nominee, Stanford Pathologist Garry Nolan, by Australian Investigative Journalist Ross Coulthart, taking a deep dive into many aspects of the UFO Phenomenon.*
