A murder most foul in Austin
Andrew Wimsatt, aged 62, was murdered in Austin, Texas, last Monday:
Wimsatt was sitting on a park bench at 10:55 a.m. Monday in the 2400 block of Chandler Creek Road when [Benedict Ogbodiegwu, 26] began attacking him with a knife about three minutes later, the document said.
Ogbodiegwu wrapped his left arm around Wimsatt, the affidavit said. It said Wimsatt tried to push him off but failed. Ogbodiegwu stabbed Wimsatt several times before Wimsatt fell to the ground, where Ogbodiegwu continued to stab him, according to the affidavit.
According to the document, Ogbodiegwu then put his knee on the victim’s chest and started sawing the knife across Wimsatt’s neck before running away toward the park’s pool area.
Winsatt never had a chance. By all accounts – and there are many, because Winsatt was known by many people online – the victim was “a gentle and generous soul.” For example, from David Burge (“Iowahawk”):
Andrew was a well respected civil engineer who worked in highway design and transportation research, a bit of a gentle avuncular Southern gentleman who was at the same time an afficionado of punk rock, pop surrealism art, and Midcentury Modern. He lived in Cambridge Towers, a 1965 landmark MCM condominium building near the Texas Capitol in Austin.
He was also a supporter of libertarian causes, particularly free speech on campus, and was a superfriend of @wethefifth and
@TheFIREorg. Supernice as they come, never an angry word about anyone, which makes this all the more incomprehensible.Last time I saw Andrew was when my son played a show at the 29th Street Ballroom in Austin a few months ago. I didn’t even know he was aware of the kid, but apparently had previously ordered a few signed copies of his debut vinyl LP and was there to see him play live.
Hawkspawn, Mrs B, and I had a nice chat with him after the show. I called Hawkspawn to let him know and he, like me, was a bit shook by the news.

What an outrageous and horrible and utterly cowardly deed. And yet of a type with which we’ve because all too familiar. RIP.
The suspect has a history of arrest for theft; see this. I’m sure the authorities know a great deal more about him, but so far no information has been released.

Everyone in the United States with this name appears to be from one family. The patriarch was born in 1954 and was married to a woman named Sheila Hopkins in 1982, then to a woman named Audra Mills in 1999. I’m going to wager he arrived here on a student visa ca. 1977 and received a green card through his 1st marriage. It appears he may have brought over a younger sister as well. He sired one child in 1985. This suspect would appear to be the issue of his second wife. They all appear to live around Austin or the DFW metroplex, with one member having had a sojourn in Beaumont.
He has an arrest record going back to 2017 if not earlier. No clue how many cases nor of how they were disposed.
The murder was in Round Rock, just north of Austin and part of comparatively-tougher-on-crime Williamson County. Problem is that demographics of RR are changing significantly and starting to absorb some of the Travis County idiocy.
Talarico is/was the state rep from RR, if that gives any indication of the way things are changing.
It’s been something to see how many people in the libertarian-ish media sphere knew and loved Andrew. He really seems like the kind of guy I wish I knew.
By name he is Nigerian (Ogbodiegwu). I hope we will learn more about his criminal history.
Nigerians in the US are notorious for their often clever criminality. Now the apprehended murderer will spend the rest of his life in the can aka prison, fed and housed by us taxpayers.
A prompt execution is required for convicted murderers. But for inescapable reasons, such will never happen in Leftist Austin TX.
I saw this one a little while before going to Neo’s blog.
It was surprising how many “famous” people knew the victim, so I don’t think his murder will go under the rug as soon as others have.

Given the perp’s effort to saw off poor Wimsatt’s head, I’m guessing the perp wasn’t a Christian.
Perhaps the killer was having a psychotic episode. Like he was hearing voices in his head telling him to commit murder, or suffering some sort severe hormonal imbalance. If so, maybe we should take that into account when assessing criminal culpability, or whatever we’re calling it. Right?

As sharksauce has pointed out, Talarico is Round Rock’s state rep. Twenty years ago Round Rock would not have elected him to the state legislature.

Most Igbo people from Nigeria are Christian. There are a few Muslim converts. It’s possible this killer is just crazy. I have looked around online and can’t find out much more about him.

One curio: he apparently has his father’s surname. If I’m not mistaken, the Igbo are matrilineal and generally carry their mother’s surname.
