Listening to the howling of English football fans today at Thomas Tuchel’s inept strategic decision to fall back in defense rather than press for another goal (and the win), I rather imagine a number of Americans can sympathize. England’s schools from 8-11 yo some years back. Became a great soccer player and then moved back to America (dad was Army). Not a big soccer fan @ 80 now, but I do keep some tabs on Beckham and Miami (a little) and also on Lionel Messi and especially around Final for World Soccer Cup. Don’t know Spain – liked both England & Argentina so will pull for Argentina in Final…
I never really watched before. My opinion is the officiating is uneven and the time keeping method straight up stupid.

Even those of us in the admittedly, amateur ref community, think the officiating was inconsistent. I blame marching orders to the refs from FIFA, and overuse of VAR.
The time keeping is not stupid, but can seem strange to an American used to football, and especially basketball where the clock is king. When first introduced to soccer it took me awhile to catch on to the logic. Obviously there is a time limit to games but the flow of the game is more important than a strict time cut off.
US high school and the NCAA soccer have imposed a more American time keeping with countdown to a final second and with clock stoppage. Frankly, I find such disrupts the nature of the game. Thankfully MLS and NWSL use the international standard.
Was it a coincidence that the refs for the Argentina-England match were American and a game that spent? The refs kept a tight leash, calling numerous fouls. Much better than the travesty during the Argentina-Switzerland match.
Argentina was the better team.
What was strange was the very inconsistent crosses by the outside. All you have to do is cross the ball to the goal. So many crossed over their target. These are professionals?
We need a soccer thread for Sunday’s final. Hint-hint.
