Election Eve open thread

The New Neo Posted on November 4, 2008 by neoNovember 7, 2008

For discussion of the voting returns. Talk amongst yourselves!

I may come on to do a little liveblogging a bit later. Then again, I may not. Only the shadow knows for sure.

8:51: I’m baaack! Only a tiny bit high, just enough to take the edge off. I’ve decided it is a lot better to simply not watch TV, and instead to follow this thing through the comments section of various blogs. Continue reading →

Voting day

The New Neo Posted on November 4, 2008 by neoFebruary 26, 2025

When I was a child my grade school would close on Election Day because it was used as a polling place. A day or two earlier, the booths would arrive and were set up in the gym, so we got to see them. They were large and had somber brown curtains, exuding the unmistakable whiff of grownupness, serious and mysterious.

I seem to recall that they had mechanical voting machines in New York even back then (it turns out I’m correct about that), which looked like enormous typewriters or perhaps the innards of a grand piano, with a series of little levers and hammers. It was impressed on us just how important the whole process was, although for us kids it was first and foremost a cause for celebrating because of the day off. Continue reading →

Jim Moran comes out of the closet

The New Neo Posted on November 4, 2008 by neoNovember 4, 2008

Those “simplistic” Republicans. Whatever could they be thinking?

Oh, and while we’re at at—why not?

Obama’s lump of coal

The New Neo Posted on November 3, 2008 by neoNovember 7, 2008

Another blast from the Obama past has been dropped, a bombshell interview from last January with the San Francisco Chronicle in which Obama said that the environmental policies he proposes would cause builders of new coal plants to go bankrupt. And he didn’t sound the least bit sad about the prospect.

Republicans are pushing the quote, especially in swing states that figure heavily in the coal industry. Continue reading →

More from the Obama archives: waiting for the right moment to push the progressive agenda

The New Neo Posted on November 3, 2008 by neoNovember 7, 2008

Many of the revelations about Obama that have come out in the past week have been excerpts from old interviews. I’ve even come across one myself—this piece that appeared in Harper’s two years ago, back when Obama wasn’t yet exercising such tight control of his mouth and his message.

It’s instructive to look at what Obama was saying when his every word wasn’t being scrutinized. Continue reading →

Here’s another golden oldie

The New Neo Posted on November 3, 2008 by neoNovember 3, 2008

Norman Thomas—remember him? Socialist who ran for President about ten thousand times?

Here’s a prescient remark he made:

The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism. But under the name of ‘liberalism’ they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program, until one day America will be a Socialist nation, without knowing how it happened

Obama says…

The New Neo Posted on November 2, 2008 by neoNovember 2, 2008

…we don’t need no steenking coal.

So I guess Joe Biden is vindicated.

Another reminder of Obama’s arrogance—as if we needed reminding

The New Neo Posted on November 2, 2008 by neoNovember 2, 2008

Found this gem over at Hillbuzz. It’s all pretty dreadful, but the really special arrogance begins at :40:

And here’s a primer of Obama’s dirty tricks, from the same source. It happened to Hillary and her supporters, and now it’s been happening to McCain and the Republicans.

The return to Standard Time: hate it hate it hate it

The New Neo Posted on November 2, 2008 by neoNovember 7, 2008

So, why turn the clocks back to Standard Time in the fall? After all, that’s when we really need to save—or rather, to extend—the daylight.

Yes, I know. In winter the “savings” comes in the morning, so that early risers and especially all those schoolchildren don’t have to get up and wait for the bus in the dark. But when the afternoons are already so short—especially in these northern latitudes—it’s a bite when, right after Halloween, we get the added treat of afternoons ending almost before they begin. Why are Obama’s supporters afraid?

The New Neo Posted on November 1, 2008 by neoNovember 7, 2008

Obama is ahead in virtually all the polls, and you’d think Democrats would be enjoying the ride. But many of Obama’s supporters are nervous. As one Obamaphile says:

Look, I have this sense of impending doom; we’ve had a couple of elections stolen already. The only thing worse than losing is to think that you’re going to win and then lose.

Not just one, but a couple of elections stolen. Continue reading →

Fallen fall

The New Neo Posted on October 31, 2008 by neoOctober 31, 2008

It’s towards the end of fall in New England. There are still a few trees at brilliant “peak,” but most have either lost their leaves or turned more rusty colors, the subdued but still-lovely and dappled hues of late fall.

Here’s a recent photo of mine of the leaves where most of them now are—on the ground:

Hillbuzz is buzzing

The New Neo Posted on October 31, 2008 by neoOctober 31, 2008

This is a fun blog to visit for those who might be down about McCain’s chances of winning.

On Tuesday night we should learn whether the Hillbuzz folks were dreaming by continuing to state that McCain has an excellent prospect of becoming President, or whether they were savvy in their analysis. In the meantime, enjoy.

Oh, and it’s a bunch of Hillary-supporting-guys writing the blog, not women as many assume.

[ADDENDUM: And if that’s not enough optimism for you, take a dose of this.]
