From Trump:

At my direction, the United States Southern Command delivered a swift and lethal kinetic strike to successfully execute Niño Guerrero, the infamous leader of Tren De Aragua, one of the most bloodthirsty Terrorist Organizations on Planet Earth. Before I returned to office, Joe Biden opened our Southern Border to millions of Illegal Criminals, and allowed this foreign army to rape, maim, and murder American Citizens with total impunity. During my Campaign, I pledged to expel these monsters from our Country, and bring Justice to the families of those they slaughtered, including the precious 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray, 22-year-old Laken Reilly, and countless other beautiful souls. With this action, the United States Military has brought retribution for them, their families, and their loved ones. Early in my Administration, I delivered on my promise to designate Tren de Aragua as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, deport thousands of evil criminals, and wage war against the Cartels, who have long been waging war against our Citizens, while weak leaders left America helpless and defensive. This action was coordinated closely with our friends in Venezuela, with whom we are working very well.

Several things are coming together here: the changes in Venezuela, and the designating of Tren de Aragua as a terrorist organization. Venezuela was active in this operation:

The strike happened earlier this week alongside Venezuelan security forces, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Friday.

He did not give a specific date, but said the strike targeted a compound housing Tren founder and leader Hector Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, known as Niño Guerrero. …

“We extend our gratitude to the Venezuelan security forces for their support to the successful joint operation against a Tren de Aragua compound that resulted in the death of the narco-terrorist organization’s leader,” said Gen. Francis L. Donovan, head of US Southern Command.

“Guerrero was a wanted fugitive charged by the U.S. Department of Justice with ordering, directing, and facilitating acts of terrorism and violence in the United States,” he said.

So much has been going on lately that it’s easy to forget the developments in Venezuela that began with the arrest of Maduro.

[NOTE: See this earlier post of mine today for background on the attacks.]

The Old Dominion shooter attacked an ROTC class, as I described in my previous post. Now the victim who died has been identified:

Lt Colonel Brandon Shah was identified as the person killed in the deadly shooting at Old Dominion University in Virginia. …

[The killer] reportedly entered a classroom inside ODU’s Constant Hall and asked if it was a ROTC class. Upon getting confirmation, he launched the attack, shooting the professor several times. The FBI said during a press conference that Jalloh shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ before opening fire. …

Brandon A. Shah is a native of Virginia. He served as Professor of Military Science (PMS) at ODU’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). Shah enlisted into the Army in 2003 as an Aviation Operations Specialist. … Shah’s service included Active Duty Army, Army Reserves, and Virginia Army National Guard and he was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and a rotation to Atlantic Resolve. Shah had a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and a Military Science Minor from ODU, an MBA from the University of Georgia, and an MS in Engineering Management from the University of Kansas.

RIP.

I wonder whether the campus of Old Dominion is gun-free, because the killer Jalloh was fatally stabbed by one of the ROTC students:

A heroic ROTC student fatally stabbed the crazed ISIS-linked gunman who opened fire inside an Old Dominion University classroom Thursday, preventing further carnage, law enforcement sources said. …

“The shooter is now deceased thanks to a group of brave students who stepped in and subdued him – actions that undoubtedly saved lives along with the quick response of law enforcement,” FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement.

The perp Jalloh was apparently a naturalized citizen, and therefore his previous conviction for ISIS support did not allow the US to deport him – unless he had lied about his ISIS leanings (or something else that is non-trivial) when he was naturalized. Ted Cruz has tried several times, beginning in 2014, to pass a law that would allow such citizens to lose their citizenship, but it never passed.

In the Michigan attack, which featured a car ramming a synagogue and in which the perp also died, there has been no official identification. Rumor has it, however (for what it’s worth), that he was Ayman Ghazaleh of Dearborn Heights, a naturalized citizen from Lebanon who claimed that relatives in that country had recently been killed by Israelis. As I said, none of this is confirmed. The article also said the car was loaded with explosives, which could explain the fire.

If the above turns out to be true, I have little doubt that much of the left and so-called “woke right” will try to justify the attack and/or make excuses for it as a retaliation for Israel’s supposed “genocide.” But whatever the facts turn out to be, the Trump-haters will blame Trump, the root of all the evil in the world.

There were two terrorist attacks today in the US. One was at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. The shooter killed one person and injured two, and is dead himself.

I feel fairly confident in calling it a terrorist attack rather than “merely” a school shooting because the shooter has been identified as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, 36. And guess what? He was convicted in 2016 of ISIS ties:

In 2016, he was arrested for attempting to provide material support to ISIS, according to public court documents. He allegedly attempted to help procure weapons intended to be used in what he anticipated was going to be an attack in the U.S., the complaint said at the time. The complaint also alleged that he attempted to provide funds to individuals hoping to join ISIS.

He pleaded guilty to attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization and was sentenced to 11 years in prison. He was released in 2024, according to the Department of Justice.

Although he didn’t serve the full eleven years, it seems he served close to eight years. Even eleven would not have been enough, however – although it’s hard to see how he could have been sentenced to more than that, because it was just an attempt. He is a US citizen; you can find a lot more information here. He apparently was radicalized by listening to recorded sermons of al Qaeda’s Anwar al-Awlaki, and then [emphasis mine]:

Following service in the National Guard, Jalloh traveled to Africa, where he stayed between July 2015 and January 2016. While in Nigeria, according to FBI investigators, Jalloh first established contact with an ISIS operative who later introduced Jalloh to the CHS [Confidential Human Source].* Jalloh told the CHS in April 2016 that he wished to carry out a domestic attack similar to the Fort Hood shootings carried out by Nidal Hasan in 2009.* Jalloh also allegedly spoke about targeting an unidentified person who had organized several “Draw Muhammad” cartoon contests.*

In May 2016, the CHS introduced Jalloh to an undercover FBI agent posing as an ISIS member.* During conversations on an unidentified mobile messaging service, Jalloh allegedly told the agent that it was best to plan an attack during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. He allegedly believed such violent operations were “100 percent the right thing to do,” and he prayed to Allah to make him a martyr.* Jalloh allegedly gave the agent $500, believing it would reach ISIS’s coffers.*

On July 1, 2016, Jalloh entered the Blue Ridge Arsenal gun store and firing range in Chantilly, Virginia. According to security footage and the store’s owner, Jalloh allegedly tried to purchase a Bushmaster AR-15, but did not have adequate identification.* Jalloh returned the following day and purchased a Stag Arms 5.56 caliber assault rifle.* The FBI arrested him on July 3 and charged him with attempting to provide material support to ISIS. Jalloh pled guilty on October 27, 2016.* He was sentenced to 11 years in prison on February 10, 2017. In a letter to the court, alloh reportedly renounced ISIS and its “superficial and dishonest interpretation of Islam.”*

That renunciation was almost certainly bogus and/or temporary. Note how Jalloh seems to have now followed his original plan: an attack on military people – such as the Fort Hood attacker’s victims – during Ramadan. It’s Ramadan right now. The “military people” part was fulfilled because of this:

The victims have not been identified. Two of them are members of the school’s ROTC program, NBC affiliate WAVY of Portsmouth, Virginia, reported.

“We can confirm that two members of the university ROTC program were shot and were taken to a local hospital to treat their injuries,” the U.S. Army Cadet Command told the station in a statement.

Officials said Jalloh allegedly targeted an ROTC class and was a former member of the Army National Guard.

That’s followed by “a motive in the shooting is unclear.” That seems extremely absurd at this point.

The day’s second attack involved a perp – also now deceased but as yet unidentified – who rammed a car into a synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan. Fortunately, no one but the perp was killed in this one, mainly because there were security officers on the scene who opened fire. The perp fired back and wounded one guard, and eight first responders are also being treated.

It’s not totally clear whether they killed him, he killed himself, or he died in a car fire.

We await word on his identity. Could be a jihadi, or could be just the usual Jew-hater on left or right. So many possibilities!

I doubt these attacks were coordinated with each other. There’s a lot of chaos and violence as well as incitement these days, all of which act as releasers for those inclined to attack. There’s certainly also the possibility of higher-up organization. However, I’d expect the latter to feature larger attacks.

Well, they aren’t exactly kids. But they’re pretty young – eighteen and nineteen years old, children of naturalized citizens from Turkey and Afghanistan. In their copious free time they constructed – or purchased, or were furnished with – an IED, and proceeded to travel from Pennsylvania to NYC to throw the device at some anti-Mamdani, anti-Islamification protesters at New York’s Gracie Mansion.

The MSM has done its best to obscure the facts and make the reader think, at least for a while, that it was the anti-Islamification protestors who threw the bomb. But more about that in a moment.

The two bombers are now in custody. The bombs were serious devices. From PJ Media:

In case you missed it, on Saturday, March 7, an anti-Islam protest gathered outside Gracie Mansion — the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani — when two homemade improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were thrown toward the protesters.

The devices contained triacetone triperoxide or TATP, a volatile homemade explosive often called “mother of Satan,” as well as nuts, bolts, and screws. They were ignited but failed to fully detonate, creating smoke and chaos. …

The suspects are 18-year-old Emir Balat and 19-year-old Ibrahim Kayumi, both of whom are from Pennsylvania. They were arrested shortly after the incident. Both the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force called it “ISIS-inspired terrorism.”

According to Balat’s statement to law enforcement, he wanted to carry out an attack that was bigger than the Boston Marathon bombing.

Fortunately they weren’t all that competent at bomb-making or at least at bomb-igniting and/or bomb-throwing. At the precinct Balat waived his Miranda rights and wrote the following:

All praise is due to Allah lord of all worlds! I pledge my allegience [sic] to the Islamic State. Die in your rage yu [sic] kuffar! Emir B.’

Maybe he’s hoping for some of the Mangione/Tsarnaev-type adulation from the young ladies.

And what of the protesters who were the targets? I was driving somewhere yesterday listening to the radio, and when the news came on at the top of the hour, the newsreader described the protesters as “far-right.”

So I became curious: what was actually being protested? It seems to have been not so much Islam as what the protesters call the takeover of New York by Islam. They seem to be quite theatrical; some of their festivities involved a roast pig and a live goat which the organizer, a man named Jack Lang, referred to as, “Mamdani’s second wife.” Lang also was one of the people found guilty for acts committed on J6 and later pardoned by Trump (see this). He also said:

He told a Daily News reporter that he wanted to “stop the Muslim prayers that are happening in New York City.”

“They’re humiliation rituals for the white Christian men in the city,” he added.

Not for the black Christian men? Not for the Jewish men? Not for the white, black, Christian or Jewish women? At any rate, the Muslim calls to prayer in New York are no joke. The situation sounds awful:

A tweet making the rounds this week shows video of the Islamic call to prayer, the Adhan, echoing through New York City streets at dawn. Five in the morning. Amplified. Projected over neighborhoods that still carry the scars of September 11, 2001. That date is not ancient history. It is living memory. …

The United States protects religious liberty. That includes Muslims. The First Amendment is not selective. And it should not be. But freedom of religion is not the same thing as forced participation in someone else’s religious proclamation.

The Adhan is not ambient background music. It is a declaration. The phrase “Allahu Akbar” means “God is greatest.” It is a theological claim. It is a call to submission. Practicing Muslims understand this. That is not controversial. That is simply fact.

As for the teenaged perps, here’s more information:

An automated license plate reader captured the pair entering New York City from New Jersey less than an hour before the attack, according to the complaint.

Their vehicle – registered to one of Balat’s relatives – was discovered Sunday a few blocks from where they were arrested.

A search of the car turned up a ‘hobby fuse’ and a metal can, along with a written list of chemical ingredients and components that could be used to build explosives, the complaint said.

When police detonated the devices, there was a ‘significant explosion,’ NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism Rebecca Weiner said.

The devices – which did not explode when Barat hurled them into the crowd – would have caused ‘death, destruction, an extremely dangerous compound, and an extremely dangerous place deployed,’ she added. …

Barat, whose parents were born in Turkey and reportedly became naturalized US citizens in 2017, lived with his family in a $653,000 home in Langhorne.

Two men and a woman were taken into custody at the 3,200-square-foot, two-story residence, WPVI reported. …

At least 10 agents stormed Kayumi’s parents’ $2.25 million home in Newtown on Sunday, footage captured by WCAU showed.

One man was detained at the sprawling 5,800-square-foot home, which boasts six bedrooms and five bedrooms.

Charges have not been brought against the individuals who were detained at the respective residences.

Kayumi’s parents are from Afghanistan and became naturalized US citizens in 2004 and 2009.

The suspected bomber was in Istanbul for multiple weeks in July and August 2024. He also went to Saudi Arabia in March that same year.

Balat also traveled to Turkey multiple times in the past year, with his most recent trip having occurred in January.

That’s a whole lot of traveling by these two kids of what one might call “privilege,” using one of the leftists’ favorite words. But the left won’t be saying that about them, because the left is determined to hide what’s going on here as best they can.

There are many articles about the ways in which the MSM and Mamdani have done this, but the gist of it is to carefully choose words that make it seem as though it was the protesters doing the bomb-throwing and the target may even have been Mamdani. Or, the pair of bombers is treated as just some high-spirited youths having a bit of fun as they strike out at Islamophobes. You can read about these press approaches here, here, and here. From the latter, quoting a CNN article that has since been deleted:

“Two Pennsylvania teenagers crossed into New York City Saturday morning for what could’ve been a normal day enjoying the city during abnormally warm weather.

But in less than an hour, their lives would drastically change as the pair would be arrested for throwing homemade bombs during an anti-Muslim protest outside of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s home. Here’s what we know so far.

Due to heavy criticism, CNN deleted the post and wrote:

A post regarding the two individuals arrested for throwing homemade bombs outside of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s home failed to reflect the gravity of the incident thereby breaching the editorial standards we require for all our reporting. It has therefore been deleted.

The article was no accident and no rogue event. It was part and parcel of the usual slanted coverage we’ve all noticed for decides.

As for Mamdani, this was a more recent effort, which was at least somewhat better than his first efforts. You can see what the emphasis still was:

On Saturday, a protest was held outside Gracie Mansion, where I live with my wife, Rama. Neither of us were home at the time. This was a vile protest rooted in white supremacy entitled, “Stop the Islamic takeover of New York City.” I’m the first Muslim mayor of our city. Anti-Muslim bigotry is nothing new to me, nor is it anything new for the 1 million or so Muslim New Yorkers who know this city as our home. While I found this protest appalling, I will not waver in my belief that it should be allowed to happen. Ours is a free society where the right to peaceful protest is sacred. It does not belong only to those we agree with. It belongs to everyone. I will defend that right every day that I am mayor, even when those protesting say things that I abhor.

Let me also be clear about something else. New York City will never tolerate violence, whether from protests or counter protests. Many of the counter protesters met this display of bigotry peacefully, with a vision of a city that is welcoming to all. But a few did not. Two men, Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, traveled from Pennsylvania and attempted to bring violence to New York City. They are suspected of coming here to commit an act of terrorism. There is a video of these two individuals throwing two devices towards the protest. The Police Department has determined that these were improvised explosive devices made to injure, maim or worse. Thanks to the swift and decisive actions of NYPD officers at the scene, both men were immediately taken into custody, and the devices they brought taken off of our streets.

Many of those who criticize Trump for the attack on Iran – and there are plenty who do, of course – say some version of “of course the mullahs are evil and need to be destroyed, but what Trump did was wrong.” But they have no suggestions as to what else might have worked, because virtually everything has been tried and nothing has ever worked.

Meanwhile, Trump has shown remarkable courage, as has Netanyahu. We still don’t know whether their courage will pay off in establishing a new and better Iran, less bent on terrorism and destroying (or taking over) its neighbors, and less oppressive of its citizenry. How could we know? But there’s a chance those good things will result, and if the attack hadn’t been tried, Iran would almost certainly have continued on a terrible trajectory that would not only have been destructive to its own people but potentially destructive to the entire world, particularly Israel and the US but also much of the Middle East and the Western nations.

Now for some news of what’s happened there already.

(1) The report is that Khameini and forty other Iranian leaders are dead. But the death of the Supreme Leader isn’t just a rumor. It has been confirmed by Iranian state media:

The Iranian government announced 40 days of public mourning following the “martyrdom” of the 86-year-old ayatollah, who had ruled Iran for over 36 years.

Khameini was part of the original revolutionary crew of mullahs back in 1979, ruling with a repressive and iron hand.

Aarabi also warned that “eliminating Khamenei in isolation on its own is not enough,” calling for a broader strategy aimed at the wider apparatus surrounding the supreme leader.

“You have to dismantle this extensive apparatus that he has created,” he said.

I am sure that Israel and the US are well aware of that, and are trying to manage it. The question is whether they will succeed. But they are on their way. The IDF says that forty Iranian leaders were killed, and Trump says “a large number.” But this is just the first day; more needs to be done, and much remains to be seen.

Among the officials killed were Iran’s Minister of Defense, Head of Intelligence, and the Supreme Leader’s Advisor for Security Affairs and Secretary of the Defense Council.

“The world is a better place without them,” The IDF wrote on X.

(2) Six people have been killed in retaliatory strikes by Iran in nine countries. I am very sorry about those six people, but considering the efforts Iran has made, the number could have been far greater. Most of the Iranian strikes were stopped by air defense systems.

(3) The UN Secretary-General Gutteres condemned the strikes, saying they were “a grave threat to international peace and security.” Of course he did.

(4) Iranians are dancing in the streets – not just in the US, but in Iran:

Iranians were seen dancing and chanting in the streets Saturday morning in video circulating online after “Operation Epic Fury,” which unleashed strikes targeting Iranian leadership.

“I love Trump!” one student shouted as smoke arose from a nearby building, according to a clip shared on X and reported by The Telegraph.

Other footage showed people dancing in the middle of the road — an act of joy that has been criminalized by the Islamic regime since the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

Women smiled and twirled as music played and onlookers clapped …

I would assume the great majority of people are staying behind closed doors. But I would also guess that the majority of them are celebrating, too.

(5) Will Iranian terror agents strike in US? They certainly will try, if they can. But there wasn’t much activity after US/Israel strikes in Iran last summer. Let’s hope that they don’t succed at retaliating now.

(6) Mamdani says exactly what you might think he would say, showing he’s both a knave and fool (but you already knew that):

“Today’s military strikes on Iran — carried out by the United States and Israel — mark a catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression. Bombing cities. Killing civilians. Opening a new theater of war. Americans do not want this. They do not want another war in pursuit of regime change. They want relief from the affordability crisis. They want peace,” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement. “I am focused on making sure that every New Yorker is safe. I have been in contact with our Police Commissioner and emergency management officials. We are taking proactive steps, including increasing coordination across agencies and enhancing patrols of sensitive locations out of an abundance of caution. Additionally, I want to speak directly to Iranian New Yorkers: you are part of the fabric of this city — you are our neighbors, small business owners, students, artists, workers, and community leaders. You will be safe here.”

As though Iran hasn’t been at war with us for forty-seven years. As though we are carpet-bombing Tehran, a la WWII. I wonder what he considers “sensitive locations” in New York, in need of protection. I bet they’re not synagogues. And the Iranian New Yorkers he says he will protect are probably beside the themselves with joy right now at Khameini’s fall.

You may remember Hillary as saying, about the Benghazi killings of four Americans, “What difference, at this point, does it make?” It was infuriating. The context was that she was shrugging off (and misrepresenting) the details, including the motives of the perps, as though it didn’t matter, and supposedly focusing on future prevention. But of course it mattered. If you want to prevent something you have to know who did it and why.

Hillary followed it with the statement that the perps needed to be found and brought to justice. Here’s her testimony;

The Trump administration decided to do just that: find them and bring them to justice, all these years later. That is, <aa href="https://mxmnews.com/article/cc462a1f-081d-40cf-b19a-43a97c1639c9?benghazi-architect-arrested-years-after-clinton-waved-it-off">at least one of them has been apprehended:

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Friday that Zubayr Al-Bakoush was flown to the United States overnight and will face federal charges tied to arson, murder, and terrorism for his alleged role in the assault that killed four Americans. …

“We will prosecute this alleged terrorist to the fullest extent of the law,” she said, adding that the message is simple: time does not erase accountability.

Pirro echoed that warning, stressing that the case is not over simply because years have passed. “The Benghazi saga was a painful one for Americans. It has stayed with all of us,” she said. “And let me be very clear, there are more of them out there.” Pirro said she and Patel have remained in contact with the families of the four Americans killed and vowed that investigators will continue hunting down those still at large. “Time will not stop us from going after these predators, no matter how long it takes,” she said. “We owe that to the families who suffered horrific pain at the hands of these violent terrorists.”

</aa>

… but it’s hard to know what’s really happening and hard to predict what will happen. It’s potentially transformative, though. A whole lot of dominoes could fall if Iran fell; Iran has been an enormous driver of terrorism and turmoil.

What seems to be true at the moment:

The mullahtocracy has blacked out the internet for three full days.

The regime is issuing threats to the US and Israel. The threats are not empty, but they don’t intimidate the way they once did because of the events of last summer.

A massacre is feared.

Some mosques are burning:

The people of Iran have reportedly set fire to dozens of mosques in the last 14 days. How to explain to them that this is an act of… what’s the word… decolonization. How to explain to them that it is not Islamophobic to burn down a mosque, because mosques are not places of worship in this case, but places for state apparatus to commit acts of suppression. How to explain to them that the women of Iran are burning their hijabs and lighting the Supreme Leader’s face on fire, using the flame to ignite their cigarettes, because they have been mandated to constrict themselves against their will. How to explain to Mamdani’s core that being sworn in on a Quran to a democratic position gives Khameini and the Islamist regime the last laugh, because the Quran justifies brutalizing your wife and sex trafficking children. How to explain to them that they don’t stand for human rights at all, but for the violators of freedom itself.

Lots of photos at the link of young women lighting cigarettes with burning photos of the Iranian leaders.

I’m old enough to remember (and I remember it well) how in the buildup to the 1979 takeover by the mullahs, young women of the left – the grandmothers of today’s Iranian hijab-burners? – marched wearing the covered-up religious garb and declared that to be a sign of liberation. It puzzled me greatly at the time. These days the marriage of leftists and Islamofascism is a given.

It’s said that the regime has called in reinforcements from its satellites, such as Hezbollah, to crack down on its own people:

As anti-regime protests spread across Iran for a 12th straight day, the Islamic Republic has reportedly turned to foreign militias for support, with two independent sources confirming that roughly 850 Hezbollah, Iraqi militia and Quds Force-linked fighters crossed into Iran to bolster the regime’s security forces.

The reported movement marks a significant escalation in the regime’s response, signaling a willingness to rely on allied foreign militias with combat experience to help suppress domestic dissent.

“This is nothing new for the regime. It is the logical extension of a playbook the ruling clerics have used since 1979 to outsource repression to ideologically loyal militias and then integrate them into the state’s coercive infrastructure,” Iran expert Lisa Daftari told Fox News Digital.

And the world waits to see what, if anything, Trump will do:

Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!!! President DONALD J. TRUMP

NOTE: I’ve written many many previous posts on Iran’s history. I especially suggest these, and in particular this, this, this, this, and this.

An excellent idea, if they can pull it off:

“I approved, along with the defense minister and finance minister, a sum of NIS 350 billion [$108 billion] over the next decade to build an independent Israeli munitions industry,” Netanyahu said in an address at a graduation ceremony for Israeli Air Force pilots.

The move, he said, stemmed from a desire to “reduce our dependence on all players, including friends,” after allies including the US, UK, and Germany all imposed various restrictions on weapons sales to Israel since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack.

Still, he noted, many countries around the world, including Germany, “want to buy from us more and more systems.”

The Biden administration taught the Israelis a lesson: don’t depend on the US, which is undependable.

The US gets plenty of intelligence from Israel, plus Israel has sometimes taken our military hardware and improved on it. I hope this new (and necessary) initiative won’t end those things that benefit the US.

Here’s an article from about a year ago, describing some of the problems inherent in Israel’s becoming truly independent:

“But we have dependence in all areas. It’s not just about ammunition and munitions: There are all kinds of platforms we need. Even if we produce more of our own bombs, we still need to get the planes from the US in order to fly, so we haven’t really reduced our dependence on the US just by producing more bombs,” he said.

“We talked about building our own planes once and it absolutely ruined us,” the former NSC deputy chief said. “Something like only six countries in the world produce their own fighters. The prices for production are only becoming more and more exorbitant. Even the Europeans ‘cooperate’ and buy from the US. We certainly cannot” build aircraft on our own.

Freilich was referring to the 1980-1987 period when Israel explored “the Lavi project,” which former defense minister Ezer Weizman had dreamed would help Israel become independent in developing its own aircraft.

However, the government ended the program in 1987 – despite many successes even to the test flight stage – deciding that a mix of having maxed out the defense budget in an unsustainable way to around 18% of GDP and the seeming impossibility of competing with US defense companies in this area were just too much.

“Even if we do manufacture a plane of our own, we would still be significantly dependent on the Americans: Many external parts such as metals and electronic components are still being imported from the US,” clarified Dr. Shmuel Even in a posting on the air force website in 2015. “Manufacturing an Israeli plane would definitely benefit the Israeli work market, but the odds of selling large quantities of the plane are pretty low due to tough competition with American industries.”

Frelich continued, “Even the Merkava tank, which Israel made – its engine comes from the US. Again, we are totally dependent.

“Independence from US military supply is fanciful,” he said.

At the very least, Israel can try to become as independent as possible.

Trump put it this way, in characteristic fashion:

“Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS Terrorist Scum in Northwest Nigeria, who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians, at levels not seen for many years, and even Centuries!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“I have previously warned these Terrorists that if they did not stop the slaughtering of Christians, there would be hell to pay, and tonight, there was,” the president continued. …

“Under my leadership, our Country will not allow Radical Islamic Terrorism to prosper. May God Bless our Military, and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all, including the dead Terrorists, of which there will be many more if their slaughter of Christians continues.”

This was done in coordination with the government of Nigeria, which provided the intelligence for the strikes.

When I emphasize the message aspect of this action, it’s because I think that was paramount. I don’t think it was so much about killing these particular individuals, but rather about saying, “You’re not safe anywhere, even if you’re not directly killing Americans.” I believe the goal is to have a chilling effect on the group as a whole, and on other similar groups around the world.

It’s also an interesting move of Trump’s in terms of the “America First!” part of the right that is also Christian. People such as the abominable Tucker Carlson focus on stirring up the idea that Israel is out to harm Christians in the Middle East, which is a preposterous assertion, and sometimes ignore – as Carlson does – the far greater war of Islamic extremists against Christians both in the Middle East and in Africa. This attack and these statements make it clear to people such as Carlson where Trump’s priorities lie, and challenges them to comment.

I am also struck by Trump’s language. It’s the sort of thing – the antithesis of diplomat-speak – that gets so many Trump-haters agitated and claiming that Trump’s a stupid boor. Here he speaks in almost cartoon-like language; one almost expects him to write SHAZAM!! However, I see this is very purposeful and part of his unequivocal message: I have power, and I mean business, and I mean for you to understand that.

This is one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve ever seen. There was a couple at Bondi Beach who saw one of the gunmen early on, realized the danger, and tried to thwart him. This couple – Boris and Sofia Gurman – were not young; they were 69 and 61 years old. And yet Boris somehow managed to wrest away the gun from one of the terrorists. Here’s the story (there are some still photos at the link):

The dramatic dashcam footage shows Boris courageously tackling the terrorist, Sajid Akram [the 50-year-old father], on the street and wrestling away the gun as Sofia runs to help.

Boris is then filmed pointing the rifle at the mass killer in a frantic attempt to make him retreat — only for the terrorist to grab another rifle.

The couple, who lived in Bondi and had been married 34 years, were ultimately executed at close range.

A separate drone video showed the couple tragically clutching each other where they died.

The latter photo is also at the link.

When I read that story, many things came to mind. The first is their incredible heroism, and the horrific ending as well as the tremendously touching photo. The second was the thought: if only they’d had a weapon! The third was: wait a minute, they did have a weapon and – much like another hero that day, Ahmed al Ahmed – they used it only to threaten the terrorist rather than shoot him. Unlike Ahmed, who only ended up wounded, they ended up dead.

I don’t know why they didn’t use the gun. Perhaps neither had ever fired one before and didn’t really know what to do. A worse possibility is that perhaps they thought that by firing, they’d be the ones arrested or even killed by police. They almost certainly only had at most a few seconds to think what to do, and I’m not faulting them in the least. I’m just both sad and angry that it came to this.

At first I thought maybe neither fired the gun at the terrorist because he hadn’t yet shot anyone and they weren’t sure how dangerous he was, but I learned from this article that that was not the case:

“My dashcam accidentally captured this shocking scene,” the user who posted the video, who told NBC News she wanted to go by the name Jenny, said in the caption to her post.

“One terrorist on the bridge fired the first shot, then the second, then the third. Meanwhile, the other terrorist had just gotten out of the car when an elderly man by the roadside didn’t run away. Instead, he charged toward danger, fought desperately to grab the gun, and held on tightly! Watching through the lens as the old man was finally shot and fell to the ground — my heart was torn apart,” she said.

From their first names, it seemed to me that this couple had probably emigrated to Australia, and it turns out they were Jewish and had come from Russia.

Another person who tried to fight was killed as well:

Reuven Morrison, 62, was killed when he physically confronted one of the gunmen, according to his daughter, Sheina Gutnick.

“He managed to throw bricks at the terrorist,” she told CBS News.

Also not a young person.

There were many civilian heroes at Bondi Beach that day. All of them were extraordinarily brave, but unfortunately all of them were unarmed. RIP.
