Obama and that Katrina vote
Commenter “Ken” points out something I hadn’t been aware of before: Obama was one of a small minority in the Senate who voted against the bill that waived the Stafford Act in order to make assistance funds available to the New Orleans Katrina victims without their having to match them with a 10% contribution.
That’s the same Stafford Act he lied about in his 2007 Hampton speech, the waiver that had actually occurred several weeks before he made the speech, the waiver that he voted against.
See this for a list of those who voted for and against. You’ll note that Obama’s “nay” vote was one of only 14 cast against the act, almost all of them liberal Democrats. No doubt he would say he knew the act would pass and so he felt okay voting against it in order to protest the Iraq war funds that were also part of the bill. But there’s something profoundly distasteful and almost grotesque about him voting against the waiver, knowing the bill had passed despite his vote, and then lying to the audience to make them angry that the waiver hadn’t happened.
I was still at work when I saw the earlier thread, and meant to ask whether he had voted ‘present’ on the waiver. This is even better.
There is no bar set so low that President Obama could not come up with some way to slither under it.
This is just shocking even for this guy.
“But there’s something profoundly distasteful and almost grotesque about him voting against the waiver, knowing the bill had passed despite his vote, and then lying to the audience to make them angry that the waiver hadn’t happened.”
Distasteful, grotesque, vile, duplicitous, conniving, and supremely narcissistic all describe BHO. And that’s just a few of his character flaws. 😉
Holmes . . .
Recall it’s “The AUDACITY” of whatever.
you aint seen nothing yet..
read histories of the post czar years…
Provide the links to the Congressional Record, please.
It would be a big help if you gave a link to source material for key facts like Obama’s vote against the waiver. There is so much unsourced assertion on the web that it would be a great service to us all to have a link that would allow us to instantly verify an important factual assertion.
I, too, live in New England surrounded on all sides by liberals.
Jack: I already provided the link to the official Senate site with the roll call vote, and a Wiki link to the bill as well. Here’s another link, to the US Government Printing Office. I can’t seem to access the Congressional record link.
DEK: see above. The main link I provided to Obama’s vote was the official Senate site, here. As far as I know that’s a reliable source.
I don’t think Obama’s vote is a mystery. As I said, most of the votes against the bill were liberal Democrats protesting the Iraq appropriations that were a part of the bill.
DEK, there you go – two clicks from this page.

UPDATE YOUR ARTICLE ITS WORSE THAN YOU THINK!!
Obama voted AGAINST paying 100% for Katrina damages when the congress waived the Stafford Act
The vote:
http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=110&session=1&vote=00181
The law:
title IV chapter 5 sec. 4501 of HR 2206 – retroactive 100% coverage for hurricanes katrina, wilma, dennis and rita.
became public law #110-028 on 5/25/2007 (in MAY 2007!)
according to the Daily Caller Obama gave his speech in JUNE 2007 – AFTER THE VOTE !!
OBAMA LIED TO THEM ABOUT KATRINA NOT GETTING 100% SUPPORT WITH THE STAFFORD ACT
ALREADY WAIVED BY THE TIME HE GAVE THE SPEECH PLUS HE TRIED TO PREVENT IT FROM HAPPENING AS ONE OF
ONLY 14 SENATORS TO VOTE AGAINST IT !!!!
full text of law: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/PLAW-110publ28/html/PLAW-110publ28.htm
text relating to waiving the Stafford act:
Sec. 4501. (a) In General.–Notwithstanding any other provision of
law, including any agreement, the Federal share of assistance, including
direct Federal assistance, provided for the States of Louisiana,
Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, and Texas in connection with Hurricanes
Katrina, Wilma, Dennis, and Rita under sections 403, 406, 407, and 408
of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act
(42 U.S.C. 5170b, 5172, 5173, and 5174) shall be 100 percent of the
eligible costs under such sections.
I just noted that he KNEW IT WAS A LIE WHEN HE SAID IT IN THE SPEECH – AFTER HE VOTED AGAINST IT.
ITS ALL EVEN WORSE THAN THE VIDEO SHOWS BECAUSE HE KNOWS ITS A LIE AND HE IS ONE OF 14 SENATORS
WHO ACTUALLY TRIED TO MAKE SURE THEY DID HAVE TO PAY 10% !! CHECK THE DATES !! CHECK THE DATES !!!
By comparison, John Kerry’s “I voted for it before I voted against it” is the mark of a stand-up politician.
I had a discussion last week with my sister and her husband about politics and other matters. I used the Mary McCarthy quote about Lillian Hellman to describe ∅bama: “Everything he says is a lie, including ‘a’ and ‘the.’ ” As Neo has documented for years.
I wonder if Romney will have used this in the debate. Hope so. [I do not watch presidential debates. Never have.]
Ah, ha, I see there was a link to the actual roll call vote on the waiver in Dean’s comment.
So Obama voted FOR Katrina funding before he voted AGAINST it.
Sound familiar?
But not even Kerry could come close to matching what Obama did in front of those Black Pastors days after his NO vote
…Obama not only gave them the misimpression Congress had denied the Stafford Act waiver
….he wasn’t truthful enough to admit he voted AGAINST it.
This wasn’t a “Gaffe”…it is a glimpse into his soul
2007, two similar supplemental spending bills contained funding for Katrina relief that was not subject to Stafford Act restriction. At the time Obama opposed one version of the bill because it did not contain a timeline for U.S. withdrawal from Iraq. In a May 24, 2007, statement explaining his vote against the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans’ Care, Katrina Recovery, and Iraq Accountability Appropriations Act, Obama said: “With my vote today, I am saying to the President that enough is enough. We must negotiate a better plan that funds our troops, signals to the Iraqis that it is time for them to act and that begins to bring our brave servicemen and women home safely and responsibly.”
While Obama voted against the 2007 supplemental spending bill Eric Bolling is referring to, he voted for the other version of the supplemental bill that included both a timetable for U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq and a waiver for the Stafford Act that would provide relief to New Orleans.
