Indeed there was a large protest in Montpellier this afternoon. After lunch I ran into the start of the large parade coming down the boulevard with lots of banners, drums, chanting and singing. It was more festive than angry.
But there were plenty of police in helmets with plastic shields nearby in case things shifted.
The protests started with immigrants and high school students, but this protest showed that it has solidly grown to college students, the middle class and the left.
I asked my host about the protest and he said, “It’s France.”
