I rarely watch any political speech. Won’t watch tonight either. Only thing I saw was a brief clip on FOX from CNN saying Trumps approval ratings are low. I guess it depends on who and how you ask the questions.
Wow. Trump is hitting it out of the park.
In addition to the good economic news, he is saying so many of the things conservatives wish would be said to Democrats.
Trump turns and points to them and says it.
Tough night for the Dems.
Ripping totally into the Democrats. The more they refuse to acknowledge common goods, the more ridiculous they look and the more he rips into them…..wonderful to behold
A SOTU more full of patriotism and love for the USA than any I can remember.
I listened to it earlier and would still be listening but I am away from the radio now. I agree with physicsguy and Huxley. A love fest for the MAGA minded! I also feel blessed to be witnessing history made by DJT!
I didn’t watch in real time; I usually read the text later and watch clips. But I read that not only did many Democrats refuse to attend, but the ones there wouldn’t even applaud the hockey team.
Trump didn’t go on too long. I make it at about two hours.
I hadn’t originally planned on watching but ended up watching it anyway. I’m glad I did, I thought it was great. I’ll be interested to hear what the consensus is tomorrow.
Now we wait for the legitimate and responsible fact checkers to help tell us what was true as to the economic and other numbers and what was exaggeration.
Interesting how it actually segued from Trump boasting as the hero of the hour to the continual presentation of American citizens as the heroes of our nation.
Personally I want the SOTU message to be a summary of the good, the bad, and the ugly, and what new, revised, or repealed legislation is needed to improve on our deficiencies and deficits (financial and physical/moral). A truth to power moment from the Executive Branch to the Legislative (and yes, the Judicial branch*), and to us as sovereigns. But tonight’s numerous acknowledgements of American heroism is worth its own evening in front of the Congress and the full Supreme Court. I would think a ceremony in conjunction with Thanksgiving would be appropriate.
*A comment about the need to impeach some errant judges at the lower levels, who violate or side step true constitutional analysis and assessments in their work, might have been appropriate given our recent lawfare history, etc. Of course the Biden admin’s executive branch efforts at political warfare should be excoriated as not what we are about.
In a separate aspect to all of this, I would not find it amiss if the SOTU allowed for 5 or 10 minutes for the Chief Justice to summarize the state of the Judicial branch (need for more resources or whatever) and the status of “the law” in the nation [avoiding discussion of any particular ruling in this setting would still be ok]. Some emphasis on the fact that not everything requires a law to fix it, or at least is not covered under the federal constitution as the venue or agency to address some our our issues/ problems. We are supposed to have the personal liberty to attend to those ourselves, outside of government.
One could say that the ‘gloves came off’ long ago with Trump. I would say that tonight the brass knuckles went on. It must have been painful for many Democrats to sit there and absorb punch after punch. But they deserve it. Clearly the message went out to not react favorably to anything, but they could not have predicted the dilemma he would present time after time; nor the ferocity of his response to their childishness. Big boy politics.
Trump clearly believes that there is zero chance of bipartisanship on any issue; so there is no reason to play nice. Given the extreme antagonism, it is hard to see how U.S. governance will function as time goes by. Some individuals with stature on both sides badly need to negotiate a rapprochement.
My other concern is that the people who most need to get the message would never listen to Trump–so the media will frame their reaction.
EPIC! MASTERCLASS!! ICYMI President Trump’s State of the Union address to Congress – Full Video
I believe that the below is relevant to why we are in the psychological/political climate we are in today, and which gives us a political figure and President like Trump in reaction to it.
Interesting little analysis by Jordan Peterson, using Nietzsche’s insights, as to why Rome fell, and why Christianity and “civilizational confidence” in the West are faltering.*
According to a clip from Brit Hume of Fox News, at one point when the Democrats refused to stand and applaud, Trump pointed to them and said, “These people are crazy!” So true.
The defining moment was the trap Trump laid for the Democrats when he asked all to stand if they believe the “fundamental principle that the first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.” No democrats stood and the applause went on for even longer than for the hockey team.
As Oldflyer alludes, what’s too bad is that many of the LIVs and MotR voters probably didn’t watch the speech…the ones the GOP desperately needs to reach. And yes, the left media this morning is all about tearing down the speech.
After sleeping on it overnight, I still find myself in awe of what he did last night.
I hear the Republican congressional campaigns will be running over and over, that clip of Democrats refusing to support the principle that our government is for American citizens, not illegal aliens.
Physicsguy:
“many of the LIVs and MotR voters probably didn’t watch the speech…the ones the GOP desperately needs to reach. And yes, the left media this morning is all about tearing down the speech.”
I know what LIV means, but what is MotR, please?
(– haven’t had any coffee yet today, lol.)
…
That many will get their views of Trump’s speech from the MSM truly does hurt our team.
According to this reportage from Gatewaypundit the Democrat’s crazy counter SOTU came equipped with a case full of dildoes, which, from the looks of it, might just about sum up the whole thing.*
Lots of comments and several from MotR Democrats, so we know at least a few listened.
On Fox News Radio last night they said the speech’s time was 1:41, and the longest ever SOTU.
The Democratic Party is guilty of self-immolation, and I see no reason to intervene.
Sdferr: Thanks for the decoding of motR.
Yep, it fits! 😎
…
And Cicero:
Dem party – “self immolation”:
They do seem determined!
I’m not sure that I’ve ever watched a State of the Union speech, maybe because I’m old enough to remember Buffalo Springfield :
“They’re singing songs and they’re carrying signs
Mostly say ‘Hooray for our side'”
Maybe, just maybe, I will watch a video of this SOTU address. I don’t remember the last time I watched one—if ever–in full. I probably have watched excerpts, as I just did.
Sounds as if Trump hit it out of the ballpark.
I think it’s the sad legacy of Nancy Pelosi and the Old Guard: Party Loyalty Uber Alles. They are absolutely ruthless at enforcing party unity, and perhaps now it has been made clear that they will stick together no matter what the cost, even when it comes to disavowing unpatriotic positions. How anybody could endorse such pigheadedness is beyond me.

Catching up on old posts, but it appears Starmer’s Labour Party in the UK is just as pigheaded, since they denied the use of their air bases (US access usually undisputed) for the attacks on Iran because they didn’t want to help Trump (never mind their obligations to the US as a country) until there was extensive public and private pressure put on them, some from their Middle East “allies.”

MotR: let’s go with “middle of the road” and see how we come out
Great speech, great president.
Epic and fun! I’m going to miss the show when he’s gone. Trump could only come to be in America.
What does LIV mean?
LIV – low information voter
Sasha Stone has a good (and short, for her) substack:
“Trump Made the Democrats an Offer They Couldn’t Refuse, But They Did”
