I think I know what you’re getting at with the exceedingly close comment. A win is a win though.

Yes, it was close. However, the two leading candidates were of the right-to-moderate side of the aisle. The Libre Party candidate—the leftist candidate— won only 19.5% of the 2025 Presidential vote. In 2021, the Libre Party won the Presidency with 51% of the vote.
The Libre Party is the party of Manuel Zelaya, former President and wannabe Chavista who was deposed in 2009.
The big drop in the Libre Party’s vote from 2021 to 2025—51% to 19.5%—reminds me of the Bolivian election. Evo Morales’ party had won majorities in elections since 2005 —not counting the disputed election (2020?)—but in 2025 its Presidential candidate won only about 20% of the vote, and didn’t even make the runoff.

Which of course means he actually won in a landslide because he was able to overcome the margin of cheat on the left.
Impressive.
THIS CONFIRMS the 2025 trend in LatAm: after 20 years of socialism, Bolivia chose to go Right. As has Chile and Honduras…After Argentina earlier and this past fall.
And after recent years of criminal drug-trade fuelled violence in Ecuador, that nation has cozied up to US support for quashing this menace (eg, I don’t recall the politics there but for this factoid).
