Who let the dogs out? say climate activists
It was probably only a matter of time before we heard this:
Dogs have “extensive and multifarious” environmental impacts, disturbing wildlife, polluting waterways and contributing to carbon emissions, new research has found.
An Australian review of existing studies has argued that “the environmental impact of owned dogs is far greater, more insidious, and more concerning than is generally recognised”.
While the environmental impact of cats is well known, the comparative effect of pet dogs has been poorly acknowledged, the researchers said. …
In the US, studies have found that deer, foxes and bobcats were less active in or avoid wilderness areas where dogs were allowed, while other research shows that insecticides from flea and tick medications kill aquatic invertebrates when they wash off into waterways. Dog faeces can also leave scent traces and affect soil chemistry and plant growth.
The carbon footprint of pets is also significant. A 2020 study found the dry pet food industry had an environmental footprint of around twice the land area of the UK, with greenhouse gas emissions – 56 to 151 Mt CO2 – equivalent to the 60th highest-emitting country.
The researchers were careful to state that they’re not anti-dog and that dog ownership has important pluses.
“A lot of what we’re talking about can be ameliorated by owners’ behaviour,” Bateman said, pointing out that low compliance with leash laws was a problem.
“Maybe, in some parts of the world, we actually need to consider some slightly more robust laws.”
He suggested that dog exclusion zones might be more suitable in some areas. …
“If nothing else, pick up your own dog shit,” he said.
I can’t disagree with that last sentiment – although I object to calling it “your own” dog shit. It’s really your dog’s, isn’t it?
We’re safe. We have indoor cats.
Can we put the grauniad writers in the kennel
As someone said, now that the left is down to about 21% approval rate what do they do? Go after people’s pets. Years ago I was browsing in a used bookstore and came across one called “The Dog Problem” that foreshadowed this. Little did I know …
miguel – “Can we put the grauniad writers in the kennel” What do you have against those poor pooches?
Forget it Jake… it’s Australia-town.
The enfebblement, the slouching feminization of a once robust Australia is sad to see.
Church of Global Warming is barking up a new tree.
After watching “Outback Opal Hunters”, the men and women working in the armpit of the world opal mining are not feminized. What a hideous place is opal country.
We have had dogs our entire marriage. We have 3 wonderful pups now.
To the authors: Efff you!
Typical greenies trying eff everyone’s life up for their own ego and virtue signaling.
Going after pet ownership, existence even, was inevitable.
Back when I was a hippie environmentalist I once spoke up at a commune meeting that the rhetoric was so dire that as humans we had little choice but to stab ourselves and fall on a garden.
No one knew what to say, so discussion moved on.

I’m surprised they didn’t applaud the idea. Today they probably would.

In this case — our own lives.
I find “environmental impact researchers” to be detrimental to most everything in life.
Today, on the way home from work, I could have fueled at the BP station, but I went to Kwik Trip, so I could not only feed the Ford, but I could buy a grilled cheese sandwich, for Lilyana, our Great Pyrenees.
Lily loves Kwik Trip grilled cheese sandwiches.
I must be part of the problem.
I have long since stopped believing the sort of person who produces this literature has any good motives at all.
When a person feels they must control someone else’s possessions, interests, pursuits, or passions in order to feel whole, then that person is automatically arguing from a position of Bad Faith. Ignore them until they go away, and if they refuse to go away, find a good switch and go to work until they go away.
These people are nuts.
Dear Australian authors of this article,
if people’s pet dogs are “bad for the environment”, such as- you say, they use too much of the world’s food + water, could you authors do me favor?…Could you, within the recommended numbers, of course- arrive and exterminate, THE LARGE POPULATION OF BLACK BEARS ON THE RIGHT HALF OF THE UNITED STATES?
Because, you see- these black bears MUST be using up [much, much,] more food + water, than those tiny…tiny dogs you’re talking about, so, could you eliminate the [thousands] of black bears, that are a hazard + [a big consumer of natural resources], on the right side of the United States?
They really are [such] a bother.
Please show up, + start eliminating a large number of these wild + dangerous black bears, in the USA.
That will be very much appreciated.
You’ll probably need to use- high-powered rifles, + high-powered shotguns, to eliminate these bears- and to also survive these elimination tasks, that you are about to do.
So, thank you for looking into this black bears problem, + for volunteering to eliminate our black bears problem.
But- since you authors don’t seem to be people who usually hunt big game animals, like black bears, maybe I should thank you [before] you start to eliminate these bears.
…Myself, and all the other humans- might not get the chance to thank you, or even see you ever again, after you’ve started doing your “elimination”, or “management”, of these bears.
Best Wishes,
and Good Luck,
TR
Finding your dog’s shit can can be a challenge, if it’s dark out or it is dropped amongst leaves from last fall, which becomes a version of “Where’s Waldo”.
In a pinch, any dog’s shit will do.
Using taxpayer money in this manner equates to theft.
I’m pretty sure that if you ask them enough questions they’ll happily assure you that they’re also in favor of human depopulation.
Extreme human depopulation, in fact.
(No “BE FRUITFUL AND MULTIPLY” for earnest sophisticates of their ilk…)
They’re now advertising drugs for the benefit of animals. Be careful Neo, decline from age can be very rapid, I have witnessed it. Maybe it spares you, I hope so
“Dogs have “extensive and multifarious” environmental impacts, disturbing wildlife, polluting waterways and contributing to carbon emissions, new research has
found.”
Here’s an idea; eliminate all wildlife which certainly would reduce enviro impacts and polluting waterways and certainly would reduce carbon emissions.
I will venture to guess that for every dog on earth, there are at least two different “wildlife” animals. So if animals – tamed or otherwise – contribute to destroying the earth, it’s clear that the “wild” animals are far worse for the planet then domesticated dogs.
So, where can one buy some rhino horns or elephant tusks??
This article is coded for Muslims, who think dogs are unclean. One more reason to fight against creeping Mohammedans; they’re more of a threat to your dogs than hungry Haitians.

Perhaps the Aussie authors of the article can start by killing all the kangaroos in Australia; you know, to gain experience in the skill of hunting.
Then, they can move onto eliminating all the crocodiles there to gain hunting experience in a watery environment. And just imagine all the poo the Crocs dump into their watery abodes, polluting those pristine rivers down under.
Yep, Australia would be a good place for the authors to begin saving the planet.
Then they can move onto the east coast of the USA and rid the world of pesky – and sometimes dangerous – black bears.
Nothing like the self-own of taking the 10% side of a 90/10 issue like dogs.
@JohnTyler
Sure thing! I’m in favor of that. 🙂
If nothing else- it would be entertaining, if not laughable, to see these “experts”, with their 10-year-old-kid’s-type grasp of science, + [their pencil-pushing-bodies or their desk-jockey-bodies]- go out with their weapons, and try to “go to war” with the crocodiles + kangaroos.
Talking about science is talking about science, but- an angry, fighting kangaroo would beat the heck out of the average, sedentary, reporter guy. 😀
I love love dogs in general yet hate dog shit. I grew up with dogs and had the job of being the pooper-scooper, everyday using yesterday’s newspaper* to clean up the poop. I particularly hate poop I step on.
We have laws in Slovakia requiring owners to pick up their dogs’ poop, and maybe 80% do. The law can help with enforcement of a norm, but real enforcement punishment is needed, sometimes.
Most Dems, and intn’l “Liberals”, like to talk about laws, but not enforcement. Real law is the law or norms that is enforced, like for whites to not use the n-word.
*I would often be reading a newspaper article and would have to open the shitty paper to finish the article, the wrap up the stinky poop again. A lot the news I read was, literally, shitty.
Nothing like the self-own of taking the 10% side of a 90/10 issue like dogs.

I’ll wager they’re vain about being in a minority.

The thing is, their essential complaint is that dogs perform metabolic processes. So does every other living creature on Earth.
@ cato renasci > “Nothing like the self-own of taking the 10% side of a 90/10 issue like dogs.”
I agree with Art Deco on their misperception about their numbers, and Mitchell Strand may well have a point: “This article is coded for Muslims, who think dogs are unclean.”
As usual, Not the Bee for the win.

“Please, liberals, I’m begging you, do us all a favor and come after people’s dogs. They’re destroying “Mother Earth,” and they exist in 44% of American homes.
I guarantee this will make you even more popular than you already are in the next election!”
If keying the Teslas bought by correct-thinking environmentally-woke Democrats (which generates responses like the following) gets a negative reaction from their fellow-travelers (and it has), I can only imagine the red-pilled avalanche that will be caused by attacking their fur-babies.
