Trump signs EO to promote US election security
Nice try, although I doubt that this EO of Trump’s will hold up. The president does not have the authority to set nationwide voting rules for federal elections.
However, as you can see, the EO is cleverly drafted and in this particular form I suppose it might have a chance of court approval:
The order strengthens election integrity through a variety of mechanisms, including having the Election Assistance Commission require documentary, government-issued proof of U.S. citizenship on its voter registration forms, the administration said in a fact-sheet.
In order for states to receive federal funds for elections, they will be required to comply with “integrity measures set forth by Federal law, including the requirement that states use the national mail voter registration form that will now require proof of citizenship,” the document said.
“The Order improves the integrity of elections by directing the updating of the Voluntary Voting System Guidelines 2.0 and security standards for voting equipment and prioritizing federal grant funds accordingly,” the administration said. “This includes requiring a voter-verifiable paper ballot record and not using ballots in which the counted vote is contained within a barcode or QR code.” …
“All agencies must report on compliance with undoing Biden Executive Order 14019, which turned Federal agencies into Democratic voter turnout centers,” the document said.
The trick is that it doesn’t force states to do anything, but federal money is conditioned on compliance.
One of the things that is increasingly clear is that, by taking fairly commonsense approaches to a number of things, Trump pushes the left into taking more and more unpopular stances. Democrats for voting insecurity. Democrats for illegal violent gangs. Democrats for government fraud and waste.
ADDENDUM: And right on schedule, Governor Pritzker of Illinois claims that this will disenfranchise “millions.’
5.5 million voted in IL for President in 2024. So the gov says 20% of residents can’t prove identification or birthplace?
It might be better for the courts to throw this EO out. If Trump can force states to run elections in a certain way in this manner, the next Democrat president can do the same thing.
This might work. States are already required to comply with HAVA voting registration.
Of course it would be better if Congress were to put these requirements into law.
Right hand, left hand!
Right hand: signing EO on election stuff.
Left hand: finding another excuse to not spend federal cash we don’t have.
yes but who moves the possums,
the Dems conjure up new rights out of whole cloth, sans legislation,
It’s telling that no reporter has walked up to Pritzker and asked, “How would voters be denied the vote by requiring ID? Walk me through that.”
Doesn’t even have to be argumentative. Just asking for clarification on a claim made by the governor. Assumes the man knows what he’s talking about, is competent to converse about his state’s citizens and their voting habits.
Beyond the citizen journalists who wear their bias on their sleeves so people know about it, there’s a market for journalists (on either side, but come on, it would be a conservative) who throttle their desire to argue and just ask questions. “Dumb it down for me” journalism would get me to pay attention, because I don’t have all the answers on the myriad subjects I’m supposed to pay attention to these days. Someone who banished their emotion from newsgathering would get a lot of respect.
That’s probably just a fantasy. Maybe the novel could make someone some money.
A trans-woman acquaintance of mine posted on FB that this is a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise trans-Americans. Not quite sure how that works. Possibly due to a mismatch between the sex stated on the trans-person’s birth certificate or passport and xir asserted gender.
Voter ID, and other Fed bullying, should very much be done thru granting or withholding Fed funds.
And the Dems need to cut the Fed funds available for such Federal direction for it to stop. Reps are already against it, at least in a lot of rhetoric.
But as also noted, the Rep Congress should codify this good policy thru passing legislation.
Whatever Pritzker thinks he can get over on the gullible, the objective meaning is that “millions” of voters are not citizens. Like to know how he knows that and why he thinks disenfranchising them is a bad idea. Or why the rest of us are supposed to think so.
Richard Aubrey:
No, that’s not what Pritzker means. He means that we are supposed to believe that “millions” of citizens are unable to obtain valid IDs and proof of citizenship. There are a few such people, born long ago (for example) and whose IDs were destroyed in fires or that sort of thing. Or perhaps trans people, as RNB mentioned above, whose IDs don’t match their current appearance.
None of those things is insurmountable and such people obtain IDs all the time.
States with all mail in elections are violating the constitutional rights of the electorate. Such “elections” are crooked as hell and Trump needs to stop them by force if necessary.
Counting illegals for representation is also unconstitutional as hell. Before the shitbag donks voted on behalf of millions at the rate of 3/5 per slave. Now they are voting on behalf of tens of millions at the rate of 5/5 per illegal.
neo.
What you say is true of the unidentified. I recall that, iirc, South Carolina, offered free rides to people to the local DMV for non-driver license applications. Had twenty-three takers.
What would Pritzker think is more saleable to his fans; millions of non-citizens suddenly not allowed to vote, or millions of those lacking ID? Or some vague set of “others” ?
I suppose most of the citizens of Illinois were aware of the issue of a few who’ve not gotten ID replaced in this world where it’s required every time you turn around. Even I, just turned eighty, am sometimes carded when I buy liquor. Not because they doubt, but because it is required–might have gotten busted recently or something–and a cash withdrawal from the bank, and If I want to fly, and various other things. So I wonder if Pritzker thinks he can fool the folks who are normal citizens. Needed ID to check into a condo a couple of months ago. Who doesn’t know this?
RE: Trump and warp speed–
Trump has learned from his first term, where he moved too slowly, which allowed the Democrats to more effectively block his every move.
(Of course, getting control over both the Presidency and—by however thin a margin–over both Houses of Congress, has made it much more possible for Trump to accomplish what he has done so far. However, time is of the essence, since the party in power usually looses seats in the midterm elections, effectively giving President Trump a two year deadline to solidify the changes/reforms he wants in place.)
This time around, Trump obviously had many people thinking and working for months before his inauguration, getting cabinet members selected and ready for early confirmation, identifying the parts of government, laws, and policies which are in most need of reform, the targets for major reductions in force, and efforts to cut waste fraud and abuse, as well as the mechanisms by which to accomplish these tasks.
All this resulting in a very careful campaign, an ongoing daily–almost hourly–blitz, resulting in hundreds of meticulously crafted, quickly signed and issued Executive Orders, aimed in every direction, which were stacked up and ready to go on day one.
They’ve taken so many actions, initiated so many changes, that it has made it very difficult for the left and Democrats to counter the sheer number and magnitude of the disruptions and changes which Trump is generating, both government and nation-wide.
