It looks so different than the side that presents itself to us. The side we see has plenty of dark gray smooth areas called maria. The far side is thought to have a thicker crust making it harder for molten material from the interior to flow to the surface. But no one really knows why.
The anniversary of the Sputnik launch reminded me of a great memoir written by Russian rocket developer Boris Chertok. Reposted my review: Rockets and People
Is it just my imagination, or is the percentage of plain ol’ “batshit crazy” people–people who’ve wandered way off the beaten, main track, and into the brush and brambles, and maybe a sinkhole or two–a lot higher these days?
If you want a mystery to investigate, try 1/137–the fine structure constant–and why that fraction is apparently critically involved in every major aspect of the physical construction of the Universe.
That particular number, 137, has apparently intrigued, and baffled some of the greatest minds in Physics and in other fields.
Will do, Snow.
Snow: Is it just my imagination, or is the percentage of plain ol’ “batshit crazy” people … a lot higher these days?
It seems that way.
Having been to London and seen Traitor’s Gate the video was interesting
I would think that the reason the “dark side” of the moon is less smooth is because it is more susceptible to meteor impact. The “near side” always faces earth so the earth provides some shielding for it.
From the video about medieval London, I went to review the history of the Great Fire of 1666. The walls and historic gates were demolished mostly in the mid-18th century, with the names, but not the walls, remaining, except for a few Roman and medieval sections here and there.
Been to London numerous times. So many place names still be used from the Medieval period. Use to enjoy London, but now would not go there. Did a number of “Walks” with guides.
Not long ago I linked to a review of a new biography on Cormac McCarthy written by Tracy Daugherty.
The WSJ Magazine publishes an excerpt from the book.
Cormac McCarthy’s Marriage Was Ending When an Editor Changed His Life
In an excerpt from his new biography of the author, Tracy Daugherty explores the grammatically eccentric manuscript and heated debates that led to the publication of McCarthy’s first novel.
The video comments that the Tower of London would be a symbol of fear for the commoners of London. Probably yes, for a generation or so after the Norman Conquest, but later I suspect the average Londoner was barely conscious of it.
For the most part, it would not be relevant to daily life. You were far more likely to find yourself imprisoned or on the block at the Tower if you were a noble or of direct royal descent than if you were a lowly commoner.
Not that law and order were kind and merciful at street level either, of course.
Something else to keep in mind: the Medieval period lasted for centuries, and a great deal of change happened over the course of that time. At different times in that period London was effectively a village, a major city, a fortress, almost abandoned, a true metropolis, not necessarily in that order.
Over at the Jerusalem Post – headline and first paragraph:
US-Israel relationship may be irreparably damaged,
former Biden official warns
Ex-Harris national security advisor Phil Gordon told the Post that US support for Israel collapsed, warning that the damage could be permanent and blaming missed opportunities to end the Gaza war
This is all so transparently stupid. We should have known they’d be searching for a fig leaf to hide behind. This seems to be it – missed opportunities to end the Gaza war.
HC68, the first Norman king of England to take the oath in English was Henry IV, whose reign began in 1399. The aristocracy was heavily Norman-descended for centuries after that.
How odd for a Texan to enter an Ohio mental hospital for treatment of a case of influenza. How’s that square, Mr. Talarico?
…warns…that…US support for Israel collapsed….
Actually that’s not the truth (surprise!).
What said “former Biden official” (heh) should have said was that
…DEMOCRATIC PARTY support for Israel collapsed…
BUT if the Democrats were truly honest—no, that’s not possible, but it’s why the subjunctive MUST be used—they would warn EVERYBODY that
…Democratic Party support for the US collapsed…
OTOH, I don’t think any of the last two warnings is really that necessary….
Anyone who thought the previous Brazilian election—the one that brought Lula back to power—was more than a little bit wonky, well…
Highest resolution picture of the far side of the moon ever taken.

I’ve been assured again and again that ‘anti-Zionism’ is not ‘anti-semitism’. Or something like that.

That’s right. Essentially a replay of the US 2020 “election”.
(Or should that be a color revolution(TM) in “official” camouflage?)
One might also ask—in the same breath—“hey, what about Romania?”…
But the biggest coup was Hungary’s most recent election. WTH happened there? Right, Orbán’s corruption did him in…
(Well, maybe…but he sure was being targeted by all the usual slimy suspects.)
