Now it’s the flu
My son came to help me clear out my ex’s apartment, but he only can stay a week. He had great ambitions, but two days after he arrived he got the flu, with a high fever. It’s not COVID – he took a test – but the flu can be mighty nasty too.
And naturally I caught it.

Hope you feel better soon… Flu’s no fun.
Acchh!!
Get well soon!
Get Tamiflu or its generic, Rx needed. Specific for flu.
If I could presume to offer one bit of general advice:
Don’t try to do too much too soon or too fast regarding your ex-husband’s stuff, if you have the option. You and your son are both stressed, grieving, your bodily defenses are probably weakened. I wouldn’t be surprised if you both catching the flu is directly related to that. I know sometimes circumstances leave no choice, but let yourselves recover if you can.
When my mother died a few years ago, I oscillated between trying to clean up everything all at once, and procrastinating. Neither was best practice, I realize in retrospect.
But remember that you need to take care of yourselves, too.
Get Tamiflu or its generic, Rx needed. Specific for flu.
Oh dear. That sucks! And I don’t know if you like dark humor, but hearing that you and your son now have the flu on top of everything else, that line popped into my head from the movie Young Frankenstein:
“Could be worse…could be raining.”
Que torrential downpour.
I remember moving into a new apartment in Boston during the winter.
I got sick, felt like crap and didn’t feel like unpacking. My solution was to lie in my sleeping bag on the floor and read Stephen King’s “The Stand” about a superflu killing off 99.4% of the world.
It was a vivid experience. 🙂
When it rains it pours. Best wishes to you and your son for a speedy recovery.
Feel better soon; enough is enough. 🙁
Speaking of which, I got a flu shot today, first time in several years. Sorry you got it already, it’s early for the flu.
No on tamiflu that shit is dangerous ,, try quercitin and chicken soup
So sorry. Hope you are both well soon.
We all go to the other side eventually!
Thanks for reminding me… I’ll get my flu shot today.
Why are people – especially conservative-leaning people who have presumably followed the Fauci fraud revelations – still taking Covid tests?
Coronavirus has always been one of several viruses whose mutations cause “the flu” every year.
The most recent data on flu shots showed INCREASED rates of flu in the people who got shots.
(i.e.–they do NOT prevent infection)
Wash your hands throughout the day, gargle with a “gold” mouthwash every evening, get your vitamin D level about 50.
Do the things that prevent hospitalizations from flu/Covid/resp viruses.
The recent paper matching your description is the Cleveland Clinic prospective cohort study (preprint, 2025).
Title: Effectiveness of the Influenza Vaccine During the 2024-2025 Respiratory Viral Season: A Prospective Cohort Study
Authors: Nabin K. Shrestha, Patrick C. Burke, Amy S. Nowacki, Steven M. Gordon
Source: medRxiv preprint (DOI: 10.1101/2025.01.30.25321421; versions posted starting early 2025, with updates through later in the year)

Key findings
Study population: ~53,400 Cleveland Clinic employees in Ohio (working-age adults) during the 2024–2025 respiratory season.
~82% received the influenza vaccine (mostly trivalent inactivated).
Vaccinated individuals had a higher cumulative incidence of laboratory-confirmed influenza over the study period.
In adjusted analyses (accounting for age, sex, job type, location, etc.), the hazard ratio for influenza was approximately 1.27 (95% CI 1.07–1.51) overall in some versions, corresponding to a calculated vaccine effectiveness of about –27%. Later analyses stratified by influenza activity levels found a significantly higher risk specifically during high-activity periods (HR ~1.33).
huxley, that must have been quite something! Did you get through the entire book that way? And did you have time left over to fill in with long-form poetry or something? (Maybe Emerson, given that it was in Boston?)
Sounds like everyone concerned had their immune levels lowered by stress – physical and mental.
Auwe!
Can you just put everything in boxes and leave it somewhere safe for the time being?
Lay in some chicken soup and go to bed?
I had to clear out my mother in law’s condo in two weeks while my husband moved her to assisted living. Got help from my sister – we had done the same for our mother and knew the ropes – but a lot of it ended up in storage to be dealt with another day.
It’s time to prioritize you health and well being. ‘Stuff’ can wait.
