Victor Davis Hanson on Carney and Canada — 22 Comments

  1. If Trump is lucky he might defeat Canada. That will be a place in the history books for him. The defeat against Iran and the Houthis might not look so bad. Or the $5 gas, or the $40 trillion debt. Not when he has really shoved it to those evil Canadians.
And the real victory – Lake America……

Meanwhile here come the mid-terms. And maybe one day the Epstein files.

  2. The Province of Quebec actually imposes tariffs on goods from other Canadian provinces.
    What a crazy policy.
That would be analogous to US States imposing tariffs on goods from other US States.

I used to travel (on business) often to Alberta and British Columbia (BC). It was common to hear from Albertan’s nasty comments about Quebec,
Albertans also would say that BC means “bring cash.”

  3. You stated my fears. When, and they will, Dems get in power, they will undo all Trump has done. We will be screwed.

  4. I second ShireHome’s and the fears of others. If the Dems regain control as the MSM (controlled by Dems) project the inevitability thereof, we will be screwed royally.

  5. and I must add my distress that so many of my fellow citzens do not see the gaping waw if Democrats with their delusions get governmental control. I am too old to flee to another venue. I’m going to have to tough it out, here in the Deep South, where my fellow citizens are cut from the same cloth, except for recent college grads. It greatly troubles me that anti-American messages should inadvertently be funded by our own federal government, in support of “higher” education. .

  6. When i read or watch something by VDH, I’m almost assured it will by very cogent and he normally brings receipts. I seldom disagree with him. The guy’s an ace.

  7. om,

All the leftys I follow just can’t give up Epstein. They talk about it at least every other day. Another symptom of TDS.

  8. Oh I won’t be so sure a democratic administration would change anything but the rhetoric while not doing much in reality. Biden didn’t do much to alter pre-existing tariffs once he was post Trump 1 since once tariffs are in, US unions and the like sort of like them staying to support US workers. And dropping trans shipping of China steel can be used as a political hammer that the democrats are paid off by Chinese communists (yeah they are, but this would be more open).
So other than dropping the ‘51st state’ jibes and relaxing the cross alcohol bans, the fundamental items that are actually in the US interest won’t actually change under a dem admin because Canada really has been taking advantage, and even in the dem party there are more US interests than there are Canadian.

  9. VDH points out in his column that 45% of Canada is now immigrants and their Canadian born offspring. That is absolutely nuts! No sane country in the world would do this to itself, and one cannot help but think this is because the policy makers in Ottawa (in common with their US counterparts) despise the people they govern.

Thomas Massie, Tucker Carlson and the rest of the Woke Right are also still blabbing about Epstein.

  11. JG3,

Like I said, a symptom of TDS. The virus can infect the right also. Tucker, MTG, etc as examples.

    — whatever

In 2001, Trump bequeathed Biden (or rather Biden’s handlers) a secure southern border. They threw it open again on the first day of the new administration.

They faked up multiple felony allegations against Trump.

They used lawfare to destroy people like Lindell and Giuliani.

They don’t really have anything else to use.

The stuff they’d really like to be able to use doesn’t resonate. So they rotate around through stuff they hope will land, and they only have a few tools available.

The kook ‘RIght’ like Tucker Carlson are esp. bereft of tools, because Trump has mostly done stuff that the Righty rank and file like, the few exceptions are drowned out by the many popular moves. So they’re left with desperately spinning Jew-hatred and Epstein.

If it wasn’t for economic factors, Trump and the GOP would have little to fear in November. But inflated post-covid prices are still rubbing the electorate’s skin raw and that has to be worked around or past.

and I must add my distress that so many of my fellow citzens do not see the gaping waw if Democrats with their delusions get governmental control.

    — Cicero

Unfortunately, there is a swath of the electorate who barely pay attention to events and are mostly asking, “When are prices going to come back down?!”

When they complain about inflation, they don’t just want the rate to slow, they want the prices to go back down to what they were pre-covid.

Which of course will not happen. We saw that exact same reaction after the inflation cycle in the 1970s, it takes time to adjust to the idea that the higher prices are the new normal, and until that happens people remain agitated and angry about it.

  13. HC68 –

The problem is that people will really not like the solution to high inflation: higher interest rates. In about 1980 Paul Volcker began raising the prime rate until it reached 21.5% just before Reagan took office. This induced a recession, which Reagan was willing to live with in exchange for taming inflation.

Inflation remained low for so long that hardly anyone alive today remembers what the late 1970s and early 1980s were like. So when inflation hits anything above 5% people go nuts.

  14. Recessions are necessary to curb consumer enthusiasm and vigor, which otherwise would run away in Western economies.

  15. The problem is that too many seem to be under the impression—erroneously—that Carney and his party have Canadian interests in mind; and these “too many” therefore try to analyze Canada’s political decisions and actions accordingly.

Carney in fact wants to destroy Canada, much as Labour in the UK intends to destroy the UK and the EU wishes to destroy Europe…AND (for closer-to-home clarification) the Democrats intend to destroy the USA.

(If “destroy” seems a bit harsh, one can substitute “transform”.)

Carney has a distinct advantage in this benighted ambition, since in the process of leading Canada down the “road to serfdom”(TM)—AKA “WEF Rules”—which Canada’s Liberal Party was planning, and implementing, even before Trump appeared on the horizon, he can pin the blame for most all of Canada’s problems on Trump…while the citizenry—earnestly, hysterically—laps it up (though it does help immeasurably when the national media is ideologically, and otherwise, in your sordid orbit…cf. the global media, generally.

    Yep, a Liberal Prime Minister’s wet dream…

  16. Carney, you fool among Onrario fools, get right and work to save Canada. America can’t save you, but you can save yourselves.

  17. There are also internal Canadian politics in play here. As VDH notes, Alberta has a vote coming up for the first step toward secession from the Canadian confederation. From Carney’s POV, he wants to squelch that first step, and one way to do that is to hype up anti-U.S. feeling.

  18. If Alberta votes for independence from Canada, let’s hope it motivates some US states to break apart.
E.G., Eastern Washington and Eastern Oregon from their respective states
Many (most?) counties of Illinois from Cook County / Chicago
Most NY State counties to separate from NYC and its environs.
Many counties of Calif to separate from the leftist strongholds of LA, SF, etc.
Most PA counties separate from Bucks and Allegheny counties
and this would be just for starters.

The big cities within their respective states are hotbeds of the left wing, big govt. , corrupt, high crime, hate-America-first, socialist / neo-communist politicies and their populations are such that they literally can control the policies of their entire state.
And these big city regions have almost zero in common with the other counties within their state.
