The art of the self-deportation deal — 6 Comments

  1. Your relative was lucky. It could easily have been far worse for him as a returned immigrant to the West. Especially under Stalin.

    Naivete can be deadly.

EDIT: It’s me, HC68, not sure how my name got screwed up.

  2. The Oregon Trail also had return traffic, though no one was keeping careful count.

  3. Similar family tale. My uncle’s family emigrated from pre-Soviet Russia, some arriving in The USA and at least one male family member emigrating to Canada, where a lot of “Ukies” wound up. Apparently he did pretty well, but decided to return to “the old country,” somewhere in the Ukraine prior to WW II. He was never heard from after the war began, so he probably became one of the millions who died during that conflict or shortly thereafter during the holodomir. Talk about choosing poorly.

  4. As far as I can tell, my Great-grandfather, two of his brothers, and a cousin came to western PA and WV, to mine coal. One brother returned home, so one out of four went back. The rest seem to have all settled down, got married, and had families here. I have occasionally wondered why that one chose to go back. Homesick? Didn’t like what he was doing? Fleeing trouble?

  5. And yet, despite the systemic racism these illegal immigrants encounter upon arriving in our white supremecist nation, these folks manage to send $65 billion per year to their family members in Mexico.
