Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but I’m just not feeling it for this 250th. It’s nothing like 1976. As is my usual habit I cruise by Drudge, CNN, and MSnow, every morning. Drudge and MSNow are full out hate Trump and the US, CNN just slightly better. The leftists I follow are also in full voice today.
Almost 50% of our population is full of hate for Trump, conservatives, and even the country. They are embracing DSA (communists). While I’m glad I live in a red state, and Jax, despite the inner city, is full of vets, lots of Navy people here, I fear we are inching towards a violent confrontation. I see my home state of Colorado circling the drain. I won’t be around in the next 25 years, but I fear what my daughters and granddaughter, and grand nieces and nephews will be facing.
Wife bought some nice steaks for the grill tonight, then we hunker down in a bedroom with curtains drawn and music blasting as we try to keep our dogs from going nuts.
Physicsguy: The Dems have substituted Trump hatred for any positive statement or plan. It’s sad, but apparently it generates funds for the party and, they suppose, will bring out voters. About a year from now they’ll realize they are not running against Trump for the next election and they’ll have to retool their campaign strategy. By the time they realize their largest electoral challenge is the DSA, not Trump or Republicans, they’ll already be behind the eight ball.

They were in 1976, too. Not as loud, but the same resentments and hatreds were in play. One reason 1976 was as overtly patriotic as it was was simply that the lefties had been humiliated in 1968 and 1972 and were desperately trying to avoid a repeat in 1976. They were running Carter precisely because he was seen as a conservative, morally upright and patriotic ‘Southern Democrat’. The thought of a hick from the South was enough to create a rebellion in the Democratic Party even back then, Frank Church led a desperate attempt to stave him off before the primaries ended, but the Dems were desperate and Carter was seen as the Anti-McGovern.
So, a lot of the voices that ached to criticize, to delegitimize, to mock the Fourth in 1976 found themselves unable to get media attention or political traction. They were there, but the power structure was deliberately trying to backbench them.

The camera people on Fox tonight did a good job picking out enthusiastic members of the America 250 crowd on the Washington Mall, especially little kids. So cute!
There were a lot of younger adult folks out, singing along with the entertainers during the fireworks, which were indeed spectacular. Also a very diverse crowd, as the cameras were almost certainly directed to demonstrate.
TV “news” is cherry picking at its finest, but there nonetheless have to be good pickings in the orchard.

The principles are well-known by members of the Church, and reiterated regularly, but there were some Conference Talks (sermons at the semiannual meetings of the entire membership) especially focused on the subject back in the Bicentennial year.
This morning, I speak about the Constitution of the United States—that glorious standard raised up by the Founding Fathers. I want to pay tribute to those who laid the foundation of our Republic. I desire to bear testimony concerning one of the most vital principles that makes the work of the founders timeless and inspired.
Every Latter-day Saint should love the inspired Constitution of the United States—a nation with a spiritual foundation and a prophetic history—which nation the Lord has declared to be his base of operations in these latter days.
The framers of the Constitution were men raised up by God to establish this foundation of our government, for so the Lord has declared by revelation in these words:
“I established the Constitution of this land, by the hands of wise men whom I raised up unto this very purpose, and redeemed the land by the shedding of blood.” (D&C 101:80; italics added.)

As presiding officer of the Constitutional Convention, George Washington appealed to the delegates in these words: “Let us raise a standard to which the wise and the honest can repair.” Wise and honorable men raised that glorious standard for this nation. It will also take wise and honorable men to perpetuate what was so nobly established.
A citizen of this republic cannot do his duty and be an idle spectator. How appropriate and vital it is at the time of our nation’s 200th birthday to remember this counsel from the Lord:
“Honest men and wise men should be sought for diligently, and good men and wise men ye should observe to uphold.” (D&C 98:10.)

We should understand the Constitution as the founders meant that it should be understood. We can do this by reading their words about it, such as those contained in the Federalist Papers. Such understanding is essential if we are to preserve what God has given us.
I reverence the Constitution of the United States as a sacred document. To me its words are akin to the revelations of God, for God has placed his stamp of approval on the Constitution of this land. I testify that the God of heaven selected and sent some of his choicest spirits to lay the foundation of this government as a prologue to the restoration of the gospel and the second coming of our Savior.
May God bless us to protect this sacred instrument. In the words of the Prophet Joseph Smith, “May those principles, which were so honorably and nobly defended, namely, the Constitution of our land, by our fathers, be established forever.” (D&C 109:54.) For this I pray, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Among the questions frequently raised in connection with our upcoming national bicentennial is “Can we maintain our basic freedoms, peace, and prosperity for another 200 years?”
The answer to this question is yes, if we shall individually repent and conform to the laws of the God of this land, who is Jesus Christ.

That said, last night I did notice the biggest, loudest local fireworks a few blocks away that I have experienced in Abq.

It is simply too obvious to me not to do. My test subjects will be my nearest university.

In short, regarding physicsguy’s media masochism, my holiday has been well spent with NewsNation and NewsMax and Wimbledon tennis (and a bit of C-Span). And none of his outlets.

This insight led me to a puzzle. Maybe an analogy will assist us?An analogy for Woke salvationists? Or maybe an illumating illustration?
Basketball is an unfair “sport”. The game is rigged. The tall always wins the game. In the rare and improbable event the short come out on top in scoring, this merely proves how unfair the game is.
Instead, we need to remake these unequally heighted people equal….
Which leads us to the Procrustean bed of the Ancient Greeks. Even one English philosopher wrote “The Politics of Procrustes” to answer Rawls “Theory of Justice.” (Which admits no definition for “justice” 427 pages into this tome.)

I take offense at your implication. I also look at Newsmax everyday. I don’t view Drudge, CNN, and MSnow in an effort to find a different point of view. I do it to see what the enemy, yes that’s the term, is doing. If one takes your ostrich position, then you are going to be blindsided when the DSA, leftists, Democrats etc come up with a new strategy that you didn’t expect. What military strategist would not want to know what the enemy is thinking? And the reality is that almost 50% of our population is in on that thinking. Yes, I have a more pessimistic view as I have direct interactions with everyday Democrats who are exhibiting extreme TDS.
The danger is within. As Lincoln said, ” At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer. If it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.” But if you prefer to be blind to such, keep your rose colored glasses on, and be my guest.

To be fair: Despite the bad optics, which Mamdani deserves, I suspect the low temps are more the result of bad HVAC engineering rather than deliberate low settings (although someone might have dropped a thermostat or two below the mandated target). We have problems even in my own house, and most chapels I’ve ever gone to, because there is only one, or just a few, controlling thermostats, and setting it to a particular temperature doesn’t always mean other areas will be identical — usually they are not.
However, the extreme difference indicates to me that somebody needs to check the equipment and all the thermostats.

To be fair: Despite the bad optics, which Mamdani deserves, I suspect the low temps are more the result of bad HVAC engineering rather than deliberate low settings (although someone might have dropped a thermostat or two below the mandated target). We have problems even in my own house, and most chapels I’ve ever gone to, because there is only one, or just a few, controlling thermostats, and setting it to a particular temperature doesn’t always mean other areas will be identical — usually they are not.
However, the extreme difference indicates to me that somebody needs to check the equipment and all the thermostats.
