There was an interesting decision on campaign finance.

Florida summer 1947 no electricity, no A/C, no plumbing. All day in the tobacco fields (age 12). Suwanee River was our occasional bathtub.
My heart bleeds for the Europeans.
Someone should remind SCOTUS that the Constitution was not meant to be a national suicide pact. The 14th amendment seemed open to a a different interpretation in my opinion.
Maybe we need to just require visas for everyone entering the country. It could be a streamlined somehow for tourists, but they would be vetted at any rate. From personal experience, entering Canada, Mexico, or England, for instance, could go from routine to complicated if authorities suspected that you might be more than a tourist, as in coming to somehow make money. It was abundantly clear that they would decide who entered and who did not.
My family moved to Daytona Beach, when I was 7 in 1959. There wasn’t much A/C around unless you went to a movie theater or a nice restaurant.
But over the next ten years that changed for us and the South. It was gradual, but house by house, business by business, A/C was everywhere. And it made a difference.
A/C wasn’t the only transformative agent, but it was a big one in turning the South from the sleepy world of Southern Gothic fiction to a serious economic force in the US.
Huxley, I agree. I started grad school in FL in 1969 and there was no dearth of AC that I found.
In that case Disney was another “transformative agent” 🙂
I moved to near Montgomery AL in 1966 from Minot. Our house (new) had AC, the school didn’t.
