  1. I’ve been cutting my own hair for around 30 years, with much better results. It came about not from a desire to cut costs, but to save time. A round trip to a barber took 30-60 minutes. I could trim my hair to acceptable length in 5 minutes. I trim the bottom. If my hair were in a 1950s cut, it wouldn’t be feasible.

  2. I also have been cutting my hair since I was in college. I got tired of wasting time going to the barber and then ending up with a haircut that I did not like. If you have the right tools, it is easy. I bought thinning shears and regular barbers scissors and I also found a razor with a safety cage that I can use to even out my hair. It helps that I have pretty good vision without glasses.

  3. If you don’t know what to do, have the barber put the clippers on setting number two for most of your head, setting number one for the back. Work on the beard is extra but worth it, especially a straight razor to make a crisp lower boundary.

  4. I thought I might be the only yokel who cut his own hair.

Wahl clippers with #5 guard, every couple of weeks.

  5. I enjoy going to my barber because it’s a social occasion for me. I’ve tried cutting my own hair at times, but was poor at it.

  6. Barber haircuts are often suboptimal, but with my “essential” tremor, I’d butcher myself.

  7. I’m with Philip Sells…I enjoy chatting with the ladies who cut what’s left of my hair. It’s a 3-generation family business. All 3 have had a whack at me…good folks all.
