  1. What the hell is wrong with the Secret Service?

There have been quite a number of incidents over the last few years, among them–there were the multiple Secret Service agents getting in trouble with hookers while on assignment, do I remember an Agent leaving his gun in a bathroom on Capitol Hill?, and recently, of course, there have been the problems with less than sterling SS coverage of President Trump during the three assassination attempts (I note the the Agent who was shot at the Press Event a couple of days ago, reportedly got off five shots, none of which hit the perp), and, now, this agent masturbating in a hotel hall way in front of guests.*

Who the hell have they been hiring?

Are they just dragging just anyone in off the streets?

Are a lot of these bozos DEI hires?

Who the hell is supposedly vetting and training these guys?

Did the Obama and Biden Administration just deliberately fill the SS with totally unqualified people?

What is going on and how to correct it, and pronto.

  2. Didn’t miss it, but nevertheless a refresher on “How a mockery is made!” —

On the question “Should Ketanji Brown Jackson be raised to the Supreme Court?” all Democrat Senators (48) + Sanders of VT and King of ME (2) + Republicans Susan Collins of ME, Lisa Murkowski of AK, Mitt Romney of UT — total 53: Aye

    All other Republicans (47): Nay

So, the 51st vote, had Collins, Murkowski and Romney voted Nay, would have been VP Kamala Harris.

Even so, Collins, Murkowski and Romney ought to be ashamed of themselves, to say nothing of the offensive sheep-like Democrats in general.

  3. Hey neo, I just read yesterday’s post about parking.

I don’t know what town you live in but check around to see if your town’s parking app has some free codes you can use for quick errands. Here’s what we have here down here in Austin, one of the very few things city government has done right:

People can use up to two free 15-minute parking sessions every 24 hours through the Park ATX app. Use validation codes FREE15ATX1 and FREE15ATX2. These codes cannot be used for the same session, and any time beyond 15 minutes will be considered a typical parking session and will incur fees.

  4. If you ask why race horse owners compete in this sport they say “To improve the breed.”

    1) Secretariat’s record times in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes have not been beaten and that was 53 years ago – 1973.

    2) Only registered thorougbreds can race fro the Triple Crown. Imagine if only the offspring from the 1896 Olympics were allowed to be in the Olympics? Improve the breed??

    3) My theory: If you took quarter horses, Arabians, thoroughbreds and whatever else type of speedy horses you chose to interbreed together, nature would eventually make a faster race horse because the present system is rigged.

    4) New blood is needed.

  5. Why is it that so many intelligent people who spell everything else correctly misspell “lose” as “loose”, “losing” as “loosing” and even “loser” as “looser?” On the parking thread there’s an instance of this but I didn’t want to give the poster a hard time. It’s bizarre just how common this is and it makes my brain hurt.

  6. @Marisa:misspell “lose” as “loose”, “losing” as “loosing”

Phonetics, for that one. One I’ve seen and find hard to explain is “bold” instead of “bald”.

“Moron” is also hard for some, the canonical example here.

And I’m afraid “tow the line” is here to stay. Which of course should be “tow the LION”, dating back to the Roman persecutions of Christians when forcing a doomed Christian to tow the lion into the Colosseum to devour his coreligionists was considered deliciously ironic. (People inclined to doubt this derivation should really click the link and check for themselves.)

  7. Regarding the comment from Mr. Galt, III: It appears that nineteen of the twenty horses who ran the Derby were descendants of Secretariat. So, contrary to your theory about “new blood,” it seems that “old blood” of superior quality is still the best. Of course, horse (or human) breeding has nothing to do with the parlous state of American politics and governance. Or does it?

  8. Why is it that so many intelligent people who spell everything else correctly misspell “lose” as “loose”, “losing” as “loosing” and even “loser” as “looser?”

I’ve noticed that too. I also many people use “worse” instead of “worst.”

  9. Star Dreck, TNG: To baldly go where most men, and some women(?), have gone before…

  10. Or “less” when it should be “fewer.” “Toe the line” is how I see it.

But really, I am very forgiving of typos and misspellings on blog comments. So many people are using their phones; between tiny keyboards and autocorrect, it’s a losing battle.

  11. Hi Steve

    You stated:

“Regarding the comment from Mr. Galt, III: It appears that nineteen of the twenty horses who ran the Derby were descendants of Secretariat. So, contrary to your theory about “new blood,” it seems that “old blood” of superior quality is still the best. Owners race horses to “improve the breed.”The horse that won in 2026 finished in 2:02:27. That was slower than the tIme run in 1931. Conditions were “fast.” You call that “superior quality.” You belong on Comedy Central.

Human beings are going faster but horses are not. Horses are not going faster because they are inbred. They need NEW blood – Secretariat is “OLD” Blood.

Thank you for making my point without understanding it whatsoever.

  12. The California vote by mail ballot arrived today. I will mail it in tomorrow.

The reform California voter guide has good recommendations
    https://www.reformcalifornia.org/voter-guides/california

They chickened out and did not endorse Steve Hilton for governor although he has consistently lead Chad Bianco by several percentage points.

    I am voting for Hilton.

But see also the recommendations for statewide offices. The Republicans have a chance to make it to the November ballot on several of them.

  13. Yeah that was a weak reed of endorsements

As a yout, i liked the tng not as much as the original series certain episodes like the first season cliffhanger with the borg were engaging some were not

Riker who was the rakish kirk archetype was pretty good although his insistance on staying theough the whole run was a little infuriating

The fact that frakes picardo and mulray defend what ths series has become is disapointing

  14. The voter guide is useful because it allows concentrating votes. With the California top two jungle primary, that increases the chance to get a Republican to the final ballot in November.

  15. I attended a very fine local race meeting last week. Thankfully none here bucked and fell being loaded into the barriers, like happened there, and the one collision/stumble/near catastrophe turned out ok. And…I was graced with meeting some wonderful people.
