Bari Weiss finds she has to give the “journalists” at CBS a brushup course in Journalism 101, old style — 8 Comments

  1. Seems to me like Weiss ought to be giving a refresher course in “You’re fired! Collect your things and leave the building. Adios.”

  2. Dear Sharyn, your fired. Seems these people think they are the Boss, and in many cases they are. Time for a radical shift in thinking.

“… Seems these people think they are the Boss, and in many cases they are. Time for a radical shift in thinking.”

Time to restate it once again: only the person or organization paying for the job owns “the job”. Those assigned to do the tasks, and follow the rules, associated with that job do not “have a job”. They have tasks and obligations to meet, in exchange for using their all too short and precious “life-time” to obtain money for other purposes.

I would assign this flawed attitude as coming via the unionization of major labor groups, but there are people here who know the history of unionization and related work roles much better than I do, so I will defer to any who can confirm or correct this idea.

  4. The newest stories on the CBS brouhaha note that the writer lied about having no statements from the White House: they had at least three.

    https://redstate.com/nick-arama/2025/12/24/heres-one-of-the-statements-the-trump-admin-provided-to-60-minutes-they-didnt-want-to-mention-this-n2197455

It didn’t contain a current comment from the Trump administration. The comments from the correspondent on the story in response to other staff appeared to indicate that they hadn’t gotten a response from the administration, and referred to the government’s “silence.”

However, then, reports indicated they’d actually received three different responses: from the Department of Homeland Security, the State Department, and the White House. Yet they didn’t run any of them, including the 300-word response from DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.

Here’s the response from the White House, and it’s clear to me why they didn’t include it – it completely blows the narrative focus on the “poor illegal aliens” of the 60 Minutes piece, and puts focus back on what should matter: American citizens.

The statement from White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said, according to the New York Times, “60 Minutes should spend their time and energy amplifying the stories of Angel Parents, whose innocent American children have tragically been murdered by vicious illegal aliens that President Trump are [sic] removing from the country.”

It also raises a good question. Where are those Angel parents’ stories in the liberal media? The liberal press doesn’t seem interested. Indeed, it’s the White House or conservative sites that have to highlight those stories. Why does the liberal media appear to care more about illegal aliens? Why don’t they want to hear from people like Angel Mom Agnes Gibboney, who talks about the “real family separation”?

“What separates me from my son is 6 feet of dirt and a coffin.”

  6. For those NYT journos—and apparently most of those employed as journalists— “freedom of the press” means keeping articles free of the Republican point of view.

I am reminded of the Hamasniks chanting “Make Palestine free,” which has the hidden meaning “Make Palestine judenrein—free of Jews.”

  7. I think it was Ace at AofSHQ who pointed out (paraphrasing) that if it takes your story 5 rewrites to get past Standards & Practices and Legal you should not be surprised when your boss finds it unacceptable.

  8. @ Christopher B -not the post you referenced, but a related one by Buck Throckmorton:

He makes an interesting point, and reminds us why “60 Minutes” is the Old Guard of Fake News (I have a personal example from 1976 / 1977; no longer sure when the piece aired, but we had on-the-ground knowledge that the show omitted or mangled).

CBS News has a well-earned reputation for being a place where journalistic malpractice is not considered a problem, it’s policy. I don’t want that to change. As Margot Cleveland joked about 60 Minutes ”At this point I wouldn’t even trust CBS News division to tell me how many minutes were in an hour…”

The legacy media is fully discredited, and that is a good thing. There is no “scandal” that network news divisions can promote at this point that will be taken as fact.

It’s important to remember that Bari Weiss does not dispute the general thesis of the 60 Minutes piece that was pulled, specifically that deportees are being subject to Trump-approved torture. b>She simply wants the story to come across as impartial journalism, not as another clumsy “we finally got him” hit job.

Therefore, I hope Ms. Weiss fails. The last thing we need is for the legacy media to have its reputation restored to a point that it can once again promote left-wing propaganda with a veneer of respectability. Instead, let CBS and the rest of the legacy news media proceed down the path to permanent irrelevance.
