Shooting at Dallas ICE facility — 11 Comments

  1. > although apparently the killer was aiming for ICE, his victims were all detainees.

    Sounds like an interesting strategy.

  2. He was using a Kar98k, the German standard rifle of WW2. It was an updated version of the WW1 G98 rifle, and not cutting edge in WW2.

It’s the military version of the Mauser sporting rifle Kurk’s killer used.

  3. They call them deranged because that is how they believe they can plausibly deny that the person in question is not just a normal lefty with the courage of their convictions.

  4. @neo
    > why would DHS want to deny that he was a political actor?

because it’s an inference anyone can make for oneself while they stay impartial.

  5. As poor locutions run, I was more irritated at this:

FBI special agent in charge says that rounds were found near the suspected shooter that contained messages that were “anti-ICE in nature.”

“in nature”? Really? Come on. Nature is too important to be treated so casually.

  6. You are confusing a later meaning of “nature” with its root and still existing meaning. The nature of the attack is the same thing as what kind of attack.

The Nature with a capital N is shorthand for “the nature of everything” but in reality “the nature of everything that pre-Socratic philosophers thought existed” because once the term was invented, Plato and Aristotle came along and said, not “Nature contains more things than they thought” but “things exist that aren’t Nature.”

C.S. Lewis’s *Studies In Words* is good.
