Meanwhile, in the Middle East

Quite a few developments of interest:

(1) As Hamas fades, what group will rise? Of one thing you can be sure: it won’t be the equivalent of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Almost certainly, all the possible candidates are pretty awful. Which are the least awful? Perhaps this bunch, which Israel is said to be arming in order to help protect the aid distribution:

The concept of using Yasser Abu Shabab’s militia was approved because it was already an existing, anti-Hamas armed group independent of Israeli assistance. Contrary to some reports, it is not connected to ISIS or extremist Salafi groups.

Notably, the militia was already armed prior to the current conflict. Members of the militia, all from the same tribe, have long opposed Hamas’ rule in the area. The militia has been defined as an armed group even before the start of the war.

In the Rafah area, very few terrorists remain, and most of the terror infrastructure has been dismantled. This improved security situation now allows for easier control of the area without Hamas governance.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend? Not necessarily.

(2) Israel detains the self-aggrandizing publicity hound, Greta Thunberg – who is no longer a teenager – and one condition of her release is that she will be watching the video of Hamas atrocities. I doubt it will make a particle of difference to her:

Her boat carried less than one truck-full of food, which she claimed she was bringing to Gaza to stop the genocide.

They needed all that space for their videocameras, phones, and make-up kits.

(3) Macron changes his tune – somewhat – on Palestinian statehood:

An international conference, the brainchild of France, to recognize a Palestinian state, has lowered its sights.

Scheduled for June 16-18 at United Nations headquarters in New York, it will now focus on determining steps toward recognition rather than recognition itself.

The redefined goal signals a retreat from the conference’s earlier ambition of seeing a large bloc of countries, including France and the United Kingdom, recognize a Palestinian state, The Guardian reported on June 7.

French President Emmanuel Macron said recognizing “Palestine” “was not only a moral duty but a political necessity,” speaking during a press conference in Singapore on May 30.

Europe is hopelessly lost on this issue as well as on so many others. And it’s not as though Europe has a stellar past record, either.

(4) Speaking of which, here’s a video on why Ireland is so rabidly anti-Israel.

(5) Iran claims to have some secret Israeli nuclear intelligence:

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency said Monday that the information Iran claimed it seized regarding Israel’s nuclear program “seems to refer” to the country’s Soreq Nuclear Research Center, the first acknowledgment outside of Tehran of the theft.

The Prime Minister’s Office had no immediate response to the remarks by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, who spoke during a news conference in Vienna.

The alleged theft comes at a time of renewed tensions over Iran’s nuclear program, which enriches uranium a short, technical step away from weapons-grade levels and looks poised to reject a US proposal over a possible deal on its atomic program.

  1. I thought some comments from Israel defense ministry were humorous, such as this:

    “The tiny amount of aid that was on the yacht and not consumed by the ‘celebrities’ will be transferred to Gaza through real humanitarian channels,” the ministry said. 

    Forcing them to watch the October 7 footage of Hamas atrocities is a good idea I think and has to impact some of them that are more naive than evil… maybe? It recalls how allies that liberated some concentration camps forced local citizens to tour the camps and help bury some bodies.

  4. Saint Greta is not in it for the cause or justice or whatever, she’s in it for the attention and the money. Having made some, maybe as much as can be expected, from this particular stunt she will move on to the next grift opportunity. Her parents should be jailed for what they have done and allowed to be done to her.

  5. The so-called nuclear secrets don’t seem to matter much. Everyone knows that Israel has nuclear weapons. What is frightening is that the President thinks he can get help from Putin to talk the Iranians out of their uranium enrichment. I hope Netanyahu can talk him out of it. Trump overestimates his deal making capability. The time for talking has passed and it’s time to start bombing.

    “She’s a strange person. She’s a young, angry person,” Mr. Trump told reporters. “She’s certainly different. I think she has to go to an anger management class. That’s my primary recommendation for her.”

    When Mr. Trump was asked if he thinks Israel kidnapped the activists, he said, “Israel has enough problems without kidnapping Greta Thunberg.”

  11. Ireland and Israel.

    The anti-Israel stance of the Irish govt (and their citizens??) is not too far off from how democrats (i.e., progressives, leftists) here in the USA feel about Israel.

    Anti-Israel is part and parcel of the socialist / left wing ideology pretty much everywhere. It also fits in nicely with anti-USA.
    It’s no coincidence that the UK’s Corbyn and his ilk are all socialists / lefties.

    Obama and his lefty bunch was/is no friend of Israel and IIRC house of representative democrats refused to support a resolution condemning antisemitism.
    One would have thought that approving such a resolution was a no brainer; apparently not for demonkrats.
    No need to mention who those democrats are in Congress that are almost openly antisemitic; they just know enough to not proclaim in public that Hitler had the right idea.

    Anti-Israel and having a socialist / leftist ideology seem to go hand in hand.

    I still believe that if Israel had been a long time ally of the USSR Israel would be considered in a far more favorable light.

  13. I’m hearing in that video a great deal of description of the hatred of Israel among the Irish political-media-academic class, but not a lot of explanation.

    A digression. An estranged cousin of Hillary Clinton gave a description of Hillary’s mother. “Held grudges. Always pissed at someone”. IIRC, he said she was an anti-semite to boot. Now imagine an Island where 70% of the population is of that type. Their distinguishing feature is making the world worse in petty ways.

    Now consider a distilled version of this in the dispositions and conduct of the Irish political-media-academic class. They are people who nurse grievances and have an affinity for others who nurse grievances. Israel is a country where people at all levels of society accomplish things and give short shrift to those stating grievances, among them local Arabs and Irish politicians. The Arabs on the West Bank and in Gaza accomplish nothing.
