Settlement in the suit by UVA fraternity against Rolling Stone
So far, the “Jackie” UVA rape story has cost Rolling Stone a pretty penny:
A University of Virginia fraternity chapter has agreed to settle its lawsuit against Rolling Stone magazine over a debunked story about a rape on campus.
The Virginia Alpha Chapter of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity said in a statement on Tuesday that it is “pleased to be able to close the book” on the “ordeal” stemming from the 2014 article “A Rape on Campus.”
Fraternity spokesman Brian Ellis said it has agreed to settle the case for $1.65 million.

In my judgment, Rolling Stone got off too easy.

I would like to have seen the fraternity get a lot more. They were really libeled.

Yes, they got off easy for was basically a clear cut case of pure libel.
Yeah, 50 million plus attorney fees should have been the fraternity’s opening offer with 20 million and attorney fees as the aim point.
Sometimes there is justice, but it is expensive. I fought the IRS for 10 years on my 2005 income taxes and finally won but it cost me thousands of dollars in legal fees.

The bureaucracy has endless ‘free’ money when it comes to lawyering up. Its aim is to make you surrender because the cash in your wallet is finite.
Yeah, that settlement seems a little low. On the other hand, I can understand wanting to close the book and move on.
Rolling Stone ought to go the way of Gawker.

In 2012, Hodgkinson took part in a protest outside the downtown Belleville post office. He said he was part of a “99%” team drawing attention to the amount of money and political power the top 1 percent of Americans acquired.
Terry Beach, the executive director of the St. Clair County Intergovermental Grants Department, said Hodgkinson worked as a subcontractor in the department’s housing rehabilitation and weatherization program.
However he had been banned from the department, Beach said. Beach said he didn’t remember him well. It wasn’t immediately clear why Hodgkinson was banned from the department.
Hodgkinson has a varied arrest record in St. Clair County, for offenses such as failing to obtain electrical permits, damaging a motor vehicle, resisting a peace officer, eluding police, criminal damage to property, driving under the influence and assorted traffic offenses.

These lawsuits were against Rolling Stone. Now they should all file personal lawsuits against the specific reporter who was grossly negligent in confirming even the most basic facts of the story — like the frat didn’t even have a party on the date “Jackie” claimed to have been raped.

The 3 million dollars in damages that were awarded included 2 million that were specific to Erdely. I can’t find the link now, but it is my recollection that Rolling Stone’s relatively deep pockets (or insurance money) paid Erdely’s fine.
Human justice is non existent. It’s better just to ask a higher power to slam down real justice and true infinite justice on these humans.
