Tonight: the second debate — 1 Comment

  1. Regarding being an auditory or whatever learner, I am reminded of what a friend said when he sat next to me in an engineering class. He was amazed at all the doodles I made during the lecture. At the same time, I was paying attention to the lectures, as I was writing in my notebook all that the professor wrote on the board. Possible interpretation: if my hand wasn’t active writing lecture notes, I would keep it active doodling. Even today, I often shake a leg while I am at the computer keyboard. Borderline ADHD? In any event, I was never so diagnosed.

But this was not completely auditory learning, as I was writing down what I saw on the board.

I am definitely more of a visual than auditory learner. When I attended graduate school, I often attended a professor’s lecture before deciding to enroll. What really pissed me off about a STEM lecturer was when he or she would rattle something off and not write the important point[s] on the board. I did not enroll in such classes, as that teaching style did not fit me.

I am reminded of Linear Algebra professor who terminated his lecture 50 minutes into a 75 minute class. He spoke very fast and wrote very little down. My point of view was that if the professor had written more stuff down, there wouldn’t be such a need for questions. I did not enroll.

A further point about STEM lectures: if I didn’t study the lecture topic before the lecture, the lecture often went over my head. I didn’t comprehend it until I went over the notes and textbook. I did better when I went over the lecture topic beforehand. That way, the lecture acted as a reinforcer, not as an “I am crushed by all this barrage of information” introduction by lecture.
