Fascinating, but I must admit that the title of your post had me thinking it had to do with a sex change operation.
God bless this guy in doing what he felt called to do. Kinda’ surprising that he hasn’t told his father, but understandable.

Is he an apostate from the muslim perspective?
A great story and he is filled with only positive and productive thoughts. Given that he mentioned anti-Semitic indoctrination from a young age both in school and in his environment, I doubt an equally positive situation could occur in the opposite circumstance. Chances are his grandmother was given an ultimatum by her husband-to-be: convert to Islam or it’s over. It seems like she has carried this burden with much regret and I hope she is happy about her grandson. Seems like a really good guy.
