Alice Walker: no Color Purple for Israel
You’re probably familiar with Alice Walker’s Pulitizer prizewinning novel The Color Purple. It caused a sensation when it was published way back in 1982, with its story of a poor black woman who rises from a history of abuse and degradation to healing.
I attempted to read it then, and couldn’t get through it all. To me, it was a one-dimensional political polemic with almost nothing but an agenda, and a transparent and relentless one at that. Not the sort of book I fancy, whatever the point of view. This book’s agenda seemed to be “men are evil, women good” (or perhaps “black men are evil, black women good”), although I suppose since I only got about a third of the way through it I admit I might have missed something.
Now Ms. Walker has blocked the Israeli translation of her book into Hebrew. No great loss, I’d say, but certainly an interesting development in the life of any author. Try as I may, I can’t recall another example of an author essentially banning his/her own book from a country, but then again Israel is awfully special in that regard, no? (In fact, the publisher mentioned in the article says it has happened before to Israel). The effort also seems rather futile, since English, the book’s original language, is widely understood and spoken in Israel. But Walker, a Palestinian activist, has made her gesture—of course ignoring the intense irony of the Palestinians’ treatment of women. On the left, however, ironies tend to abound.
Walker was born in the South in 1944, and undoubtedly suffered all sorts of racial discrimination. Later she was very active in the civil rights movement (partly because of the influence of one of her professors, none other than Howard Zinn). But it’s the following fascinating vignette from her personal life that caught my eye relevant to the themes of men, women, mothers and daughters, racism, Jews, and Israel [emphasis mine]:
In 1965, Walker met Melvyn Roseman Leventhal, a Jewish civil rights lawyer. They were married on March 17, 1967 in New York City. Later that year the couple relocated to Jackson, Mississippi, becoming “the first legally married inter-racial couple in Mississippi”. They were harassed and threatened by whites, including the Ku Klux Klan. The couple had a daughter Rebecca in 1969. Walker described her in 2008 as “a living, breathing, mixed-race embodiment of the new America that they were trying to forge.” Walker and her husband divorced amicably in 1976.
Walker and her daughter became estranged. Rebecca felt herself to be more of “a political symbol… than a cherished daughter”. She published a memoir entitled Black White and Jewish, expressing the complexities of her parents’ relationship and her childhood. Rebecca recalls her teenage years when her mother would retreat to her far-off writing studio while “I was left with money to buy my own meals and lived on a diet of fast food.” Since the birth of Rebecca’s son Tenzin, her mother has not spoken to her because she dared to “question her ideology.” Rebecca has learned that she was cut out of her mother’s will in favor of a distant cousin

Lots of pluses for Walker there. She loses nothing (the book already has been selling in Israel for decades) and she gets to vent her spleen, and get lots of publicity to boot. Sweet.

More irony than you stated, Neo. Her heroes’ treatment of women is well matched by their attitude to blacks. If their way with women is vintage 13th century, then what they think of blacks is straight 1930s. Taken out of their Arab context, the average Arab’s thoughts about blacks could fit in Stormfront flawlessly.
The Left is just contemptible in its standard–not even a double standard but a totally wrong standard: Where the historical but rectified facts of Western mistreatment of women and blacks are related to as if they were current events, while the current events of the Arab/Islamic world’s medieval treatment of women and Nazi-esque theorizing about blacks are brushed off as “Orientalism,” or worse.
As for the rest, looks like a textbook manifestation of the Left’s “The personal is the political.” Pity the poor daughter whose mother can’t see beyond the blinders of politics.

Such were my thoughts when I read reviews, both positive and negative, at the time the book was all the rage. Consequently I never read it. In the past 15 years or so, though, I’ve heard people with decent judgment say “no, it’s actually a good book, in spite of all that.” So I’ve thought that I might give it a chance one day. However, it’s quite a low priority, and as I’m 63, the chances are pretty good it’s never going to get to the front of the queue.
That’s mighty sad about the daughter. As for this stunt (can she even enforce that, I wonder?)…[ contemptuous sound]…come to think of it, it definitely won’t get to the front of the queue.

Read the book and watched the movie…. I found the Color Purple to be an engaging story and a candid look at misogyny in black culture. However, referring to your child as “a living, breathing, mixed-race embodiment of the new America that they were trying to forge” does not make for heartwarming words from the mouth of a mother. No wonder Rebecca is estranged. No one wants to be born as a political symbol. Sons and daughters want to be cherished children.
Leftists seem to have an extremely large spleen which requires great amounts of venting.

I remember reading about Alice Walker’s estrangement from her daughter a couple of years ago; I think the daughter had given an interview about it, and I felt so sorry for her. From the interview, AW sounded like a perfectly awful mother – self-centered and too busy striking poses and being the public intellectual to actually buckle down and be an attentive, loving parent.
I tried reading “Purple” myself … got about half a chapter in and thought ‘yuck’ and put it back on the shelf. I have found it a good rule for judging contemporary literature; avoid anything that Oprah has lauded.

I think of BHO as combining the worst of Wilson and Carter with a chip on his shoulder the size of Daley Plaza. Like you Neo, I never finished _The Color Purple_, and maybe I will but — Walker always struck me as saccharine and simplistic as a prose stylist. Too agenda driven, definitely.
However, when I heard her speak say on “Charlie Rose” she appeared quietly serene and very “good”. How that image of her was shaken for me by Rebecca Walker’s article (which must have been in support of her memoir) about her life with her mother and how her mother was so upset about being a grandmother (!) that she ended the relationship, which was tenuous to begin with. Alice struck me then as narcissistic (possibly even pathologically so) and definitely fanatic at the expense of real people (her daughter). I was disappointed, but I have been disappointed a lot in the recent past by the left.
Any way, the one good thing I think Alice Walker has done is her work against FGM, as far as I know, that is still laudatory. However, the rest?
And, this latest stunt with Israel is just shameful. But, again, so many on the far left are doing this sort of thing, “boycotting” Israel. And, yes, it is odd since the Arab world is not exactly progressive in its treatment of women or gays, or also – black people. I do worry that this whole “Israel Apartheid” meme is just getting started and that otherwise decent people will be roped in. Alice Walker, IMHO, is not entirely a “decent’ person, but she is an influential one (women have altars to her apparently) and so, this is just another bad sign of the times.

This sort of thing is a PR stunt designed to reestablish one’s importance–what have you done since “Purple” which was a long time ago?–and one’s lefty creds.
I don’t wish people ill–not above, say, half the people in the world, maybe–but I do like to contemplate the picture of a weekly deposit of western lefties in batches of ten thousand into Gaza or the West Bank, or the remote ‘stans, with no organization backing them up and no way to get out for, I dunno, a month.

At 21 I moved from Boston to Southern Mississippi in 1964. What an eye opener. Open racism, two water fountains, three bathrooms at gas stations, signs restricting access for blacks. But suprisingly the people themselves got along. I’m not trying to defend it, what I’m saying is white and blacks in the South would talk and laugh and spend time together without any sign of racism. It was there and I know blacks had to walk a tightrope but for the most part it was a fairly normal life. There were surely poor blacks who lived poor lives but the same was true for whites. I have been back to the deep South many times and it is so much better. The younger generation rid themselves of those racist beliefs and stereotypes and life for everyone is better. But the odd/sad part is today the tables are turned. The racism is by blacks against whites. Rapes, assaults, robbery by blacks against whites is out of control and it IS a result of racism pure and simple. The media won’t report on it unless it is so egregious that they cannot cover it up. But rape is pandemic and whites don’t dare go downtown in larger cities after dark. It is 100 times worse then the old South.

your missing the fact that those fountains and rules were created by the few to impose on the many, and that what you were seeing is the many not care.

here is something to clue you in on. the sitting at the back of the bus thing was an attack on the bus companies. it created a law that in effect deputized bus drivers as law officers to enforce it!!!!
the law was not enforced by police officers who stopped buses to check who was sitting where.
since they used the drivers as proxies, the blacks and others didnt get angry at the politicians in state, they got angry at the white bus drivers and the white race, who as you found out, dont care much.

in this way, each of these groups are not good ot have in politics as they are going to be what outside will target to destroy the society they are a part of. ergo you can go back to the 1800s and read the social ideas of doing that. but cant today (would you tell your opponent what they are doing wrong when your winning?)
so the Volk are being bribed to their own doom, and its all couched in positive ways, and intents… so that negative outcomes are ignored. its also couched in feelings so that reason doesnt come in.
this is why the germans didnt think about how the jews could be such. they didnt think about how hard they worked, that they focused on education, that they were honorable because they believed in god and feared god not man, and so on.
they forgot the humanity in the other the minute they were told they were being cheated and were equal and so there was the proof in the outcome even if you couldnt find it.
