The Cain chronicles
I am heartily sick of the story and it’s hardly begun.
Just take a look at the amount of coverage on memeorandum today, for example, and you’ll see what I mean. All those articles for something that shouldn’t have seen print until (a) the sources were identified; (b) the allegations were specified, including whether there were witnesses to the alleged acts; and (c) the details of what a settlement might mean in terms of a person’s actual guilt or innocence were fully explained.
We don’t know many specifics of the Cain settlement, but here’s a look at the subject in general, from a lawyer who knows something about that sort of thing:
TV and movies would have you believe that most lawsuits end up with a jury hearing the evidence and rendering a verdict. That almost never happens. Close to 97 percent of civil cases never see a courtroom. The vast majority settle, with the business paying good money to end the nightmare…
And, as Herman Cain has learned, you never really can buy your peace. The accusers apparently signed nondisclosure agreements so that Cain and his company could put the accusations behind them. A lot of good that did. Whether it was the accusers or others who revealed the claims, the effort to buy peace now looks like wasted money.
In the world of sexual-harassment law, the accusations are bad enough. You’re guilty until proven innocent. The law is skewed toward the plaintiffs — it’s hard to get even the silliest charges tossed out, and even then it often costs upward of six figures to do so…
Even what constitutes “sexual harassment” has crossed from common sense into farce. In the 1970s, my mother was a lawyer who faced the real thing as one of the very few women in a testosterone-fueled district attorney’s office. Today, women are at or near parity with men in most every field, and are even ahead of them among entrants to the professions.
Yet where sexual-harassment law once protected women from being forced to be the playthings of crude lechers, it’s been transformed to enforcing a prim puritanism that drains the humor and humanity from the workplace. People are afraid to make an innocent joke or compliment a co-worker’s appearance for fear of crossing some unspoken line that will bring down the wrath of the human-resources department.
And then there’s this guy, who says (paraphrasing), “I witnessed the harassment! And it was terrible, horrible! But I can’t say any more for legal reasons.”
How convenient. He can’t say what it was, but he can nevertheless allege that it was bad and would finish Cain’s political career—and that statement is legally okay? And why can’t he talk about it; was he a party to the lawsuit bound by the confidentiality agreement? Or is he afraid of being sued for defamation?
It hardly matters anymore what happened; the sides are probably set in stone. Those who already considered Cain a buffoon and idiot (and it is amazing how much vitriol of that sort was directed against him on left-wing blogs even before these revelations) will continue their condescension and hatred. Those who like him will probably like him more because they will feel he is another target of a high-tech lynching.
Cain was not a favorite candidate of mine even before this, but I have respect for his achievements and I have learned to be extremely wary of sexual harassment charges—and I actually have a quaint habit of trying to reserve judgment on these things till a few relevant facts are in.

And you know, come to think of it—I once had a dream in which Cain looked at me funny. I found it very disturbing but I never did anything about it. Does that count?
An article in Forbes offers another angle on who was behind the surfacing of the original story. It claims that Kurt Anderson, a Perry adviser, is being accused by Cain of being the source of the leak about the sexual harassment settlement. But the piece is written in such a way that I don’t see the smoking gun quote in which Cain actually accuses Anderson. Unless something is being left out, it appears that Cain is merely saying that Anderson had been informed about the case back in 2004 when he was a Cain consultant, and therefore had the information that would have allowed him to leak it, not that he actually was the leaker. Unless you count this:
Aside from knowing about the alleged sexual harassment accusations, Cain campaign officials point to the timing of Anderson’s hiring by Perry as evidence of his involvement. The campaign announced Anderson’s role on October 24, just a week before Politico broke the story.
But that’s “Cain campaign officials,” not Cain. Who are they? What is the actual quote? And are they speaking on authority from Cain or not? If Cain’s throwing around accusations against Anderson without good evidence, that doesn’t reflect well on Cain. But I’m not sure that’s what’s happening.

I’m with you completely on this. Harassment can mean anything. I don’t make decisions till I have some facts.
I have liked Cain from the very beginning when he challenged Clinton on ‘HillaryCare’. I admire his achievements and his (seemingly) forthright personality. I enjoy his ability to speak without a teleprompter. I appreciate his willingness to say he doesn’t have the answer to every question posed by the yipping ankle biter dogs of the media.
I too reserve judgment until there is actual evidence regarding the charge of sexual harassment. If the facts show he actually did harass someone (for any reason) my opinion will change. Until then, I like Cain.
Cain isn’t my dream candidate either. But if it turns out that this stink was uncorked by one of the other candidates, then that person is dead in my book. Civil war among Republicans means 4 more years of Obama. The country can’t afford that.
I’ve not decided on a candidate, but Cain has been moving upward on my list the past few weeks.
The “this guy” who claims to have witnessed the thing and can’t say more is named Chris Wilson. According to Politico, which published the allegations, “Wilson is a Rick Perry supporter and does polling for a Super PAC that supports the Texas governor’s presidential bid.” (http://tinyurl.com/3njwrbc)
My take is that, for Politico this is a twofer: they can attack Cain at the same time they can stir up animosity against Perry. I think we all know whom the Establishment desires to be the GOP candidate (and I favored him over McCain in 2008), so this all fits together.

Teri expected you to know what she meant. At six foot four and well over 200 pounds, she was an institution and known for her mannish behavior including an eye for the cute women in her plant. She had been brought up on “rassment” charges but she wasn’t worried. As she openly stated, “who they gonna believe. An important owner and employer like myself or that nothing nobody I hired. So I called her a cute little bug and smiled at her. What? I’m not allowed to do that?”
When she lost the case and had to pay $100,000, no one cared. That’s who Teri was and we expected her to be that way. But when the same thing was said about Harold, a Christian, and even though he won the case, it ruined him.
It may not be fair, but that’s the way it is when you have one side devoted to law and the other devoted to selfishness.
When a ‘boy’ leaves the plantation like that we just set the dogs loose and they take care of business. Sometimes there’s almost nothing left.
My “what the people are thinking” info, culled from ratings of comments on Yahoo articles germane to the issue, shows overwhelming skepticism towards the accusers. A lot of comments that it’s about the money. Other commenters think it’s a distraction. Lots of comments about Bill Clinton and the double standard. Small percentage claiming racism. Most think all sexual harassment charges are weak.
Despite the efforts of Journalist journalists to build a narrative and smear Cain, people aren’t buying it. Cain polled 30% nationally on Quinnipac right before this came out, so what he polls next week might be relevant.
If I could vote for Cain twice at this juncture, I would.
Mr. Cain has now blamed (via his campaign manager, Mark Block) the Perry campaign’s Kurt Anderson for leaking the story about the NRA settlement. Pamela Gellar has a video on her blog of Block making the connections, which really doesn’t prove a thing, and at this point, seems to be the same type of accusation against Mr. Cain. You have to shake your head at all the “seeming” blunders by Cain. “Seeming” because despite the blunders, Cain keeps improving in the polls.
It reminds me, as a wrestler, when some guy wanted to wrestle me who didn’t know how to wrestle. It was a recipe for an injury since the idiot would try some wild move like punching me in the face and then shooting a take down. But the metaphor doesn’t apply, in that what I like about Cain is that he isn’t a politician (wrestler) and therefore I can trust him.
I’m reminded of Alexander Hamilton and his mercurial, even dysfunctional, character. But then again, Alexander certainly had reasons, including suffering the traumatic loss of his mother and being raised in the West Indies where life was cheap. In one example, only one of many of his life, which baffles, Alexander admitted to an affair to save his public honor. And Alexander, like Cain, had his genius in both left and right brain areas. Cain surely is not the level of genius Alexander was, but could that right/left brain parity be an explanation for Cain’s uniqueness?
Many years ago, I worked the night shift at a (in those days) major electronics manufacturer. There were numerous young ladies that were trained to solder the components. (Females are better at soldering than males because of dexterity and small fingers.)
On the night shift, males were outnumbered by about 5/1. More than once, I had to endure sexual harassment. (Once, I was told my big hands indicated other things might be “big”.)
I always considered it having fun. I would never have thought about reporting anyone for harassment.
Times have changed. Whatever happened to fun.

The issue that bothers me is that Cain should have known this issue would eventually be used to smear him… and yet his initial response to it was amateurish and all over the map.
And now it turns out that a former aide of his knew about this… in 2004?? Mr. Cain, sir, you’ve let yourself get blindsided when you should have known better.
This doesn’t speak badly to his character. But a President needs to be able to cope with much worse surprises than this, with far less warning than Mr. Cain had here.
Never mind. As I’ve said before, I’d vote for a wet paper towel if it was running against President Obama… and Mr. Cain is by no means the weakest of the candidates available. If he becomes the Republican nominee, I’ll vote for him next year with a song in my heart.
If all the media types that ignored the John Edwards affair would back off now, there would be no story.
This whole “scandal” is a bunch of BS. It’s impossible to know the actual truth, but we already know that people like Axelrod, Rove, Emmanuel, and other malefactors thrive on messing with our minds via the mass media.
Right now, I’ll support Cain over all the other candidates because he seems to be the most patriotic. He’s also a proven executive and a masculine man, and that’s a big plus. We need a leader who can lead who is not some kind of messed-up personality like Obama or Hillary Clinton.
After becoming a political junked, thanks to the internet, my standards have dropped very low. No backstabbers (McCain) no flim-flam men (Romney), no insulting holier-than-thou-ers (Perry). So Cain looks pretty good compared to the others. I also have useful memories of the Clarence Thomas character assassination. The attacks against Cain remind me of the ugliness of the liberal attacks.

as an aside, the protests have gone violent right on cue… which is what i said would happen before obama was even elected. if anyone bothers to go back to the arguments then, you will find how everyone said that such would not play out that way. years later, we have a manufactured situation where the majority in ows are innocents clubs with radicals inserted ready to create a situation that traps the others as part of the whole. In the past, when prominent politicians have been accused of sexual harassment, if not worse, the media would find psychologists and sociologists who would inform us, matter of factly, that this kind of behavior is to be expected from Alpha Males — they can’t help it, it’s just part of who and what they are — so we ought to be more enlightened and understanding about their behavior.
So, where are the “Alpha Male” stories this time?

so why am i in a 47×57 inch office.. smaller than a twin mattress… 83 degrees. after 30 years in fortune 10, wallstreet, consultancies, and such?
and my new boss? promoted over me, over seniority of career, seniority of position, seniority of experience…
my salary stopped mocing when i was 27… being a white male, my indonesian wife has to be punished with being barren… cant have white male children. can you?
we cant get a house, as the burden of down payment is higher for me… so all our friends have such, as they are not mixed…
no raises, promotions, or hope of any advancement… i am not volk
