Frank-Dodd financial reform
Here we go again: another 2000-plus-page bill that is a pastiche of disparate elements that no one quite understands. It doesn’t do much to change the things that contributed most to the financial debacle in the first place (including both Frank and Dodd themselves), and its biggest effect will be to create a larger federal bureaucracy to administer it:
Dodd-Frank no doubt contains some useful provisions–inevitably, in a 2,319-page bill. Overall, however, this law is like being invited to dinner and served pictures of food…
Far from streamlining regulations, mandating greater transparency, and reducing uncertainty, Dodd-Frank provides government bureaucrats with unrestricted hunting licenses. Only one of the roughly 115 federal and state agencies currently involved in financial regulation has been consolidated. At the same time, the new law creates 12 new regulatory bodies and gives them vast amounts of rule-making discretion. In the next two years these and other financial regulators will hold an estimated 243 new rule-making procedures.
At this point, the American public seems so shell-shocked by it all that there isn’t really much reaction. But that’s part of the plan, isn’t it?
My fondest hope is that the majority in Congress after the next election will immediately repeal the omnibus bills passed the last two years and explicitly “unfund” all the new government agencies. Even if we needed major revisions in how we do things, which I doubt, we do not need them in the form of 2000+ page bills establishing more bureaucracy that can basically do anything it wants because those bills mean all things to all people.
If the administration can choose not to enforce immigration laws because it doesn’t like them, then it can pick and choose which parts of those bills to operate from, and it will interpret them as it sees fit. That will of course lead to massive amounts of legal wrangling, so the lawyers will love it, and probably the bureaucrats. The country as a whole will operate poorly, at best.
Of course Obama will veto all such legislation, but I suspect Congress could still find ways to thwart much of the changes Obama intends to occur, and the public at large would be treated to even more instances of Obama thumbing his nose at what the majority wants.
There isn’t much reaction from the public because it isn’t personal…yet.

I am glad you are pointing out the Food Safety ACT. While I have not looked at it lately, last year I read portions of what was in it then and i pointed out on this site it would drive our food production into fewer hands and give the government more control over the thing. At the time I looked at it it required what amounted to a Federal liscence-which you had to pay for- to raise a few cows or vegetables for farmers markets and required that all farms be inspected by the government in order to stay in buisiness. Many of the cows raised in this country are raised at some point in small herds by part time ranchers who either have other jobs or are retired. Many of these people will just opt out from the hassle and expense. The results is consolidation of the food supply- which makes it easier to manipulate- and easier to tighnen the grip even more on it later because then there will be less farmers/ ranchers to oppose it.
We are at the point where the Federal government says it does not have the resources to enforce Immigration laws against ILLEGAL INVADERS, yet it is steadily making new laws and regulations that it intends to enforce against CITIZENS.
Feel free to copy paste me on that without any aknowledgement that I said it! I suspect others have thought something similiar as well. I am being serious.
