Back to the future: choosing the Obama team
So far Obama’s choices for Cabinet and other advisers seem to be shaping up as Clinton redux.
This is somewhat ironic, considering that Obama ran on a “change” platform and his closest rival was Hillary (Clinton, in case there’s anyone who needs reminding). So even before he’s been officially inaugurated, he’s faced a lot of criticism about this, from both friends and opponents.
Well folks, hold onto your hats, because I’m about to defend Obama. Sorta, anyway.
A new president has a limited number of ways to go in making appointments. He/she (and I will henceforth dispense with this awkward PC pronoun arrangement and just go with the masculine) can either: (a) hark back to earlier administrations’ picks and choose people with federal government experience; (b) select those with no role in previous governments but who (we can hope) are qualified because of jobs they have held in other sectors; or (c) deal in cronyism (this does not necessarily rule out being qualified, but it is more likely to do so).
So far, Obama is trending mostly towards (a). Because of his own rather extreme inexperience, it’s not a bad way to go if he wants to reassure people that he’s not a wild-eyed radical who will appoint other radicals and/or neophytes. His appointments have a grounding effect, at least potentially. However, they also appear to be an early disappointment to those who believed he would somehow wave a magic wand and Change Everything.
The Clinton administration was the most recent Democrat presidency. To go back and try to find non-Clinton Democrats with experience in a previous administration, Obama would had to have reached back to the 70s and Carter. I for one am highly relieved that he has not done so—not only because many of those people would be ancient (or dead), but because I think that for the most part Carter’s policies were more disastrous than Clinton’s. But these two administrations—Clinton’s and Carter’s—are pretty much the only games in town for Obama if he wants Democrats with previous experience at that level.
What of (b), however? When one looks back at history, it’s an approach practiced to a large extent by FDR and JFK. The former had his “brain trust,” a shifting group of academicians who advised him through the long years of the New Deal. According to Wiki, “Many newspaper editorials and editorial cartoons ridiculed them as impractical idealists.” And this may indeed have been true, if the current view of Roosevelt as adopting policies that prolonged the Depression is correct.
An earlier manifestation of the same idea was Woodrow Wilson’s “The Inquiry,” a group of academics who advised him on matters pertaining to negotiations at the end of WWI. Of course, Wilson himself was an academic prior to becoming President, so it’s hardly surprising that he turned to them for advice. But if the Treaty of Versailles and its aftermath are any guide, they didn’t do a very good job.
JFK’s administration was a mixture of all three approaches. Dean Rusk, Kennedy’s Secretary of State, was an example of (a). He had been in the State Department since the Truman Administration, so this was a fairly conventional pick. Johnson kept him on as well (as he did for most of JFK’s appointees).
But Kennedy was famous for his own version of the brain trust, otherwise known as the Best and the Brightest. In fact, fifteen Rhodes Scholars were in high Kennedy administration posts:
“From Eisenhower to Kennedy,” observed a Harvard professor, “is a shift from the “gentleman C’s’ boys to the Phi Beta Kappas.”
The most well-known of Kennedy’s picks without previous government experience were Robert McNamara and McGeorge Bundy. Their policies in Vietnam are not much of a recommendation for method (b), either.
McNamara was appointed by Kennedy and kept on by Johnson as Secretary of Defense. A Harvard MBA and professor who later fought in WWII, he was President of Ford when he was tapped for the government job of Defense. Kennedy had initially offered the post to Lovett, who had been Truman’s Secretary of Defense. This appointment would have been an example of (a). But Lovett turned it down for health reasons and recommended McNamara, who was given the choice of Treasury as a cabinet post, one to which he may have been far better suited. But he turned it down and settled for Defense. On such small pivots does history turn.
McGeorge Bundy was prominent as JFK’s national security adviser. He was an academic who went into government for the first time during Kennedy’s administration, and stayed on through part of Johnson’s term:
Bundy was one of Kennedy’s “wise men,” a noted professor of government””although not a PhD””at Harvard University. He was later appointed Dean of the Faculty at Harvard, the youngest in the school’s history. He moved into public life in 1961, becoming national security adviser in the Kennedy administration. He played a crucial role in all of the major foreign policy and defense decisions of the Kennedy and part of the Johnson administration. These included the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and, most controversially, the Vietnam War.
Not a very impressive resume, in the end. This is not to say that choice (b) is always a bad one. But I’ve offered the prominent examples that happened to come to mind for me, and they certainly indicate that (b) is not necessarily a better way to go than (a).
And then of course there is choice (c). I’m especially glad Obama does not seem to be going that route so far, since so many of his allies and confederates during his rise to power have been either shady, Leftist, corrupt, hatemongers, or several or all of the above.
One of the best examples of nepotism in a previous administration was Kennedy’s appointment of his brother Bobby as Attorney General. Widely criticized even at the time, it resulted in the passage (in 1967) of the so-called “Bobby Kennedy Law” prohibiting such nepotism in the future. There is evidence that JFK was initially wary of appointing Bobby as AG, but that his father (speaking of nepotism) insisted on it.
Obama is a fatherless only child, so we don’t have to worry about the undue influence of a Joseph Kennedy or a brother Bobby. As for Obama’s erstwhile “spiritual father,” Reverend Wright, we can assume that Obama will not touch that particular third rail during his administration, at least publicly. But one of the reasons Obama’s associations were examined so closely (at least by the Right; the MSM didn’t much care) was the understandable concern that people such as Wright, Ayers, and Frank Marshall Davis might have input (or, in the case of the deceased Davis, have had input), not in an Obama administration, but as simpatico influences on the formation of his thoughts and policies.
It is still very early, and Obama has made few decisions yet. This is also not surprising; he seems to be a guy who takes his time and then some.
Obama’s delay in choosing a Treasury Secretary has not been reassuring to the financial markets, as they keep plunging in a kind of “how low can you go?” limbo dance. And I think very little of his Attorney General pick Holder, a man with a history of promoting policies that are too liberal for me (read “progressive”) such as the strict DC ban on handguns, as well as many of the very questionable pardons Clinton issued in the last days of his administration.
But I don’t think this automatically means that the appointment of former Clintonites is a bad idea per se for Obama. Consider the alternatives.
Given that the choices will be partisan Democrats, going with some Clinton retreads may be the best bet. There would be a better than even chance that a Rubin or Summers may be OK in the financial area. Outside of them, the main benefit of the retreads would be to prevent Dohrn and Mr. Dohrn from actually sitting in the cabinet.

Most of the Obama team in foreign policy is now and will be drawn from George Soros’ International Crisis Group (based in Brussels, the E.U. capital). Obama is NOT his own man. He owes certain people a lot for his victory.
A lot of people are not aware of just how long George Soros has been working towards this moment: since the late 1980’s. His stated goal has been to transform the United States from an exceptional nation state and Constitutional Republic into a Euro-socialist democracy. He wants us to be put under international law covering all aspects of our lives.
The important question is: will Obama and his masters overreach? If they do, the result should be expected. Four years and out. From what I’m hearing, he and the Democrats are leaning more towards being very bold during the first months in power. Rather than do things gradually, they are going to go for it all and let the chips fall where they may. They are hoping that much of what they pass will resonate with the demographic groups that voted for them in the first place. And that means they are going to appeal to the worst instincts of the most parasitic of voter blocks.

Obama is fatherless but – depending on your definition – he is not an only child. Even leaving aside his father’s side of the family, he has a half-sister on his mother’s side: Maya Kassandra Soetoro-Ng who has her Ph.D. in Education. I believe there’s a Cabinet level Department in her field. Perhaps Obama could request a waiver of the Bobby Kennedy law if he wants to appoint her.
Obama is beginning to look like a standard politician who used a lot of people on the way up. The lefties must be stunned.
Just on a side note, Oxford considers Rhodes scholars to be something of a joke, rah-rah jock lightweights sent out from the colonies. From my interactions with them, I can’t disagree.
Until I read artfldgr’s comments, I would have said that to me it looks like the old ‘be careful what you ask for, you just might get it’ – that all Obama has ever done is RUN for office, never actually had to DO anything – and now all of a sudden, he has to act – he won, but didn’t have a real plan in place as to who to appoint or what to do next.
I agree he will be doing what his handlers want…

So, I think Soros has done a fine job of positioning himself as THE power broker in American politics. Not bad for a guy who is super wealthy and, as a naturalized American citizen, pays zero income taxes to his adopted country. Pretty good ROI, if you ask me.

Remember what a mess Clinton’s first few months in office were? The stories about the all night pizza party/work sessions were suppose to seem like a good thing, but it actually just showed what an unorganized shambles the white house was in. Obama most definitely wants to avoid that and I can’t really blame him. Even if I don’t like his picks, we can’t really afford to have even a few days of dithering when a new administration takes over. Our security depends upon a smooth transition. By the way, I just recently stumbled upon your blog and really like it.

AVI, I agree with you to an extent regarding Bush, but after the oath is taken it’s totally up to Obama and his team to be familiar with things. Lets hope they don’t drop the ball for even a moment.

Ah, so someone added a entry for CFR in wiki… i beleive that… though in general you can pick up any school or college textbook, and you wont read annotations to CFR membership. you wont even have a mention that it even exists….
meanwhile, membership has been to the biggest movers and shakers in each year in their time since the 20s… most presidents, all cabinet members, etc. most leaders of the largest corporations, unions, newspapers, magazine, television, and more.

basically, they have changed us from a peoples who came to america and had the HUBRIS to think that every common man could act wealthy and copy them!!!!!
the west adopted the customs of the wealthy. strong family, working together, praying together… blood thicker than water. etc.
now, these dynastic familes dont worry much at all… anyone tha enters their ranks and stays there belongs… most just enter the lower ranks as servants to them. (authors, politicians, heads of companies, etc. )
we now have a culture that is selfish so that they cant work together withotu cheating each other. in which heterosexual normal dynastic family is all but destroyed… (very little fear that some family will realize the power of working together, and so being a family that rises in power)
women work, so that familes cant accumulate wealth any more.. we have accepted minimum wage and other things which prevents us from pooling capital in effective amounts… women are so changed that the men cant hold families together to achieve what men did in the past… (by destroying “patriarchy” for the common man, they have complete control and advantage over the common man for the unions of their dynasties are more powerful and able than confederations of separate peoples).
of course… we read and accept their skewed philiosophy in ideology… and so are going to soon be owned by them as they did in the past!!!
after all, what is it when these people own allt he material wealth and property and their PETS or Farm animals too?
your cat or dog or horse dont own property… they dont earn for their work… they get living quarters in exchange and their health care is all paid for.

You can literally have one tiny company that earns little be the owner of another larger firm, and so on, that no one would realize covers literally thousands of firms… after all, they are a VERY old banking house whose records have never been open.
(it matters not that men make the money, women CONTROL spending which is why malls and advertising is geared to play to them)
Their investment house only has around 600 people. But you should see who they have ACCESS to.

One reason why rothschilds don’t have as much as they had is that the French branch was nationalized by the French in 1982…
The other family lazard took over frances banking power… why? Because lazard didn’t have any banks… it took more than 20 years for them to recover again.
So what you don’t realize lee… and why I say stay away from the tin hatters… is that they are the most powerful… but power doesn’t make you invulnerable… they still have to have assets some place. They still make mistakes. They still have misfortunes… and they have competition… always competition..
And I said it was about 50,000 people that rule things… because those are the people who can move money and are world wide diversified.. I didn’t say that they were all linked up by red phone and a conspiracy.
The tin hatters have more than once been exposed as getting stuff from other countries services. They serve the purpose of obfuscation. So they are a mix of just enough real information to hook you in, and really rotten analysis and sensational conclusions when there are literally other equivalent and less nasty ones too.
As I said.. the CFR was made by these banking families and they were historically famous for their manipulative games. I do not know what the CFR actually does. no one talks about that for the most part…
It all depends on what you want to settle on…
They could be there just to meet…
They could be there to plan the future of mankind…
I tend to lean to the latter… my reason it the make up of the group the fact that there is a similar working group in other western countries… and that the groups tend to favor control.
Beyond that… you tell me what they do exactly… because even at a cocktail party, with the kinds of people that are there, ideas become reality and influence choices.
You cant put 3000 of the key people in every key area in one room, let them talk, and not have those discussions and ideas influence their behavior when they leave.
I also don’t know what the even higher group called the bilderbergs do. that’s an even stranger group….
They exist… they have meetings each year… they publish the attendees… but no one knows what goes on behind closed doors.

Conspiracy, is the NORMAL state of mans dealings… do you think when barny franks and Pelosi share a private conversation on what they will do, and don’t share it with anyone, that that is not a conspiracy of two?
Every crime that’s premeditated and has more than one person involved is a conspiracy.
In fact… unless your in teletubby land, everyone conspires on some level… but it takes a real sense of denial to think that people with ability don’t get together to make plans that they don’t tell others.
The main difference is that when you and I get together, we don’t have the leverage to do much on a huge scale… and they do… it doesn’t make them more nefarious, it just makes them more able… and more likely that some choice they make will cause a larger effect.
At the level of the world, control amounts to influence… not orders from the grand commander… and influence is directly related to ACCESS… so if you can call up any world leader any time you want because you have them on speed dial.. and you can connect and influence things… then you can control outcomes..
Ok, I couldn’t resist. I don’t necessarily agree or disagree with what was wrote (like many theories out there, there is enough truth that I will not dismiss but I need more to actually believe), but I did note this:
The Japanese are on to this whole thing and only through Anime will the Truth be known. There is a whole series – Blood + – that goes over this whole thing. Amshel and Karl are particularly bad while Solomon has some redeeming qualities to him (but they do not save him in the end- Ah well).
It’s good to know that my extensive collection of Anime DVD’s and watching countless hours of TV have payed off. At least we know how to beat them now – if only we can find Saya and the type of blood needed to destroy this web.

Thanks a ton for your energy to have had these things together on this site. Robin and i also very much treasured your knowledge through the articles with certain things. I recognize that you have quite a few demands with your timetable and so the fact that a person like you took as much time just like you did to help people really like us via this article is definitely highly treasured.
