  1. What ever happened to “40 days and 40 nights”?

Sheesh…You’d think that’d be enough for most people….

  2. “Biden” (continued…but for how long, O Lord, how long….?)…

    “Going after Elon Musk” edition:
“…Biden Admin Sent $300M to Reuters to ‘Look Into’ Musk and His Companies”—
    https://instapundit.com/691079/

    Culture of corruption(TM).
    Culture of disruption.
    Culture of perversity….

  3. @Mike Plaiss:Oh boy, here we go again.

Johnson is not a useful idiot. He sees to it that his cronies get their share of appropriations, and in order to make that happen he must also see to it that the Dems’ cronies get their share of appropriations. He is executing the spending parameters his predecessor Kevin McCarthy negotiated with Joe Biden long ago. It was reported way back in May that Johnson was going to do this.

“I think people understand we need to build back the muscle memory of actually doing our appropriations work. I think that means we need to come as close as possible to passing total appropriations bills out here before we leave for August,” said Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.), who chairs the pragmatic Main Street Caucus.

So far, House Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole (R-Okla.) has released top lines for each funding bill that largely mirror parameters set by then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and President Biden last May, which the House Freedom Caucus has revolted against.

The Republican-controlled House does not have to allow one dollar of additional spending. All they have to do to block spending is nothing. Instead, they give Democrats what they want so that Republicans can get the appropriations they want, and next year they will have another fake debt ceiling fight where once again they pretend they are against the spending they voted for, they pretend to be against raising the debt ceiling, then they raise the debt ceiling and go on spending just as they did before.

It will go on this way as long as Republican voters tolerate it, but the first step would have to be remembering things that happened longer than six months ago, and the second step would have to be to stop crapping on the minority of Republican Congressmen who actually try to stop it.

  4. @miguel:A million years how could there possibly br that much moisture

Because the oceans are huge, and the sun continually evaporates water back into the air to fall as rain again.

  5. Those Christmas songs are both a whole lot better than the modern dreck they run at the supermarket. Personally, I prefer religious Christmas carols, but I suppose they can’t play those at the grocery store lest they “offend” someone.

  6. There are many Christmas songs I love, but “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” is, for me, #1. Just a tad above many, many that are a close second, to my ear.

It has a sort-of, “Greensleeves,” feel to it, a song which neo has written about several times. And I do also love, “What Child is This?” based on the “Greensleeves” melody, but I prefer “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” just a bit more. “Good King Wenceslaus” is another of my favorites with a similar sound.

  7. All the water on the Earth is pretty much a fixed ammount (Snowball Earth). Water cycles through the atmosphere, upper crust, and oceans – the hydrologic cycle.

It may rain more or water may be tied up in glaciers during a particular geologic time.

The Earth is about 3.6 billion years old (look it up for a better (more accurate) number. A million years isn’t too long geologically.

  8. Maddy Prior and The Carnival Band

    sdferr:

Good of you to remind us of Maddy!

In its heyday I was a stone fan of Steeleye Span, the British electric-folk group for which she was the shining vocalist. She probably can’t hit the high notes in “Elf Call” anymore but she still sounds good.

Then the little Elf King said unto me,
“Come and nurse an elf child, elf child, elf child
    Far beneath the sea.”

Prior and the Carnival Band are on their last tour right now and I guess I won’t make it to the UK in time.

  9. Alan+Colbo, we sang Silver Bells in our school’s Christmas Concert when I was in 8th grade. I am fond of the song, and its harmonizing.

I am reminded of satirical Christmas songs from my childhood. Once again (groan..), here is an offering from Tom Lehrer: A Christmas Carol.

Walt Kelly offered several in his comic strip Pogo. Here is his parody of “Deck the Halls:” Deck Us All with Boston Charlie.

All I could find for his Good King Sauerkraut, a parody of Good King Wenceslaus, was 30 seconds of a video. Not worth it.

    Kate

Personally, I prefer religious Christmas carols, but I suppose they can’t play those at the grocery store lest they “offend” someone.

It was never considered that many of us are offended by the lack of traditional Christmas carols. I was never a churchgoer, but never was “offended” by hearing religious-themed Christmas carols. The current dreck played in the stores during the Christmas season offends me.

  10. Re: That Time It Rained for Two Million Years

Reminds me of the convention for naming episodes of the Friends sitcom:

The One with the Sonogram at the End
The One Where the Monkey Gets Away
The One Where Rachel Finds Out

It would be fun if they named geological eras:

The One Where It Rained for Two Million Years
The One Where All the Dinosaurs Died
The One Where Apes Took Over the Planet

  11. Mike Plaiss,

I agree. “Moonlight in Vermont” is a beautiful song. It surprises me more singers don’t cover it. It should be more popular than it is.

  12. @Karmi:Some have complained about the Republicans and/or Conservatives not having much ‘Media Sway’.

There are a lot of people, especially old people, who don’t know there is a media that is not the NYT-WaPo-CNN-broadcast news.

  13. I was going to say, “and people like my elder sister,” when I remembered that even I am old, and she is older.

  14. Ouch! A brutal close to the markets today after the Fed decision and outlook. The Nasdaq down 3.56% and the S&P500 down 2.95%.

    From Briefing.com

The major indices traded slightly higher until selling picked [up] at 2:00 ET as investors grappled with the likelihood that the Fed will be pausing its rate-cut campaign and that rates are going to remain higher for longer. This understanding followed the FOMC’s decision to cut rates 25 basis points to 4.25-4.50%, as expected. It was not a unanimous vote. Cleveland Fed President Hammack dissented in favor of leaving the target range for the fed funds rate unchanged at 4.50-4.75%.

  15. There are many Christmas songs I love, but “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” is, for me, #1. Just a tad above many, many that are a close second, to my ear.
    ==
Yes. Next in line is Adeste Fideles. Among 20th century efforts, Carol of the Bells is tops.
    ==
These three aside, I prefer liturgical music.
    ==
Sleigh Ride is a seasonal song rather than a Christmas song.

  16. @Kate:After pushback from Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, Speaker Johnson now reportedly in talks to pull the omnibus spending bill

Guys who weren’t even Republicans a few years ago, and maybe aren’t even now, have to intervene to keeping our own House majority from stabbing us in the back. That’s how bad things have gotten.

  17. @Kate:Whatever works.

It could have worked a long time ago too. But “now” is the next best time to start. These guys don’t have much in the way of principle, but they will do the right thing if they might otherwise be kicked off the gravy train, and credible threats perhaps combined with a few examples will bring them all to Jesus.

They need to understand, if they don’t, that the GOPe is not why people voted for Republicans, and they can only stay in office if they get their minds right.

  18. Ok, you’re dancing all around it, but here’s a proper list of Christmas song greatness:

    1. O Holy Night
    2. Good King Wenceslas
    3. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
    4. Adeste Fideles
    5. Silent Night

For the God Rest Ye folks, please give a listen to this:

    https://youtu.be/EqBLsvsf2L0?si=EEE6eIWwi_GdVdx2

From the aforementioned Maddy Prior and The Carnival Band. The woman singing it has a very district/unusual style. I’ve had this on my Christmas playlist for a few years now and I still haven’t figured out if I love it or hate it.

  19. WaPo “Republicans scrap spending bill under pressure from Trump and Musk”
A government “shut down” would be a nice Christmas present

  20. All I want for Christmas is the Republican party to grow a spine.

This is the time for Republicans to hold the line against spending increases. They have a window of about a year to actually act like they believe in fiscal responsibility before they start campaigning for the 2026 election cycle.

It would be nice if they could campaign on the successes they had in reducing the spending monster that is the federal bureaucracy.

Are they going to squander this opportunity? They two extremely capable businessmen, including the richest man in the world volunteering his time to point out how to make cuts/slim down the leviathan. I’ve already seen grumbling by the always spenders beginning to attack Musk for being a billionaire looking to feather his nest. Who better than a billionaire who has built multiple successful companies to point out how the government can become efficient?

  21. @Brian E: Who better than a billionaire who has built multiple successful companies to point out how the government can become efficient?

On the other hand, consider what happened when President Truman entrusted the trillion dollar bill to C. Montgomery Burns.

  22. This is Vivek’s response to the CR bill.

    Vivek Ramaswamy
    @VivekGRamaswamy
I wanted to read the full 1,500+ page bill & speak with key leaders before forming an opinion. Having done that, here’s my view: it’s full of excessive spending, special interest giveaways & pork barrel politics. If Congress wants to get serious about government efficiency, they should VOTE NO.

Keeping the government open until March 14 will cost ~$380BN by itself, but the true cost of this omnibus CR is far greater due to new spending. Renewing the Farm Bill for an extra year: ~$130BN. Disaster relief: $100BN. Stimulus for farmers: $10BN. The Francis Scott Key Bridge replacement: $8BN. The proposal adds at least 65 cents of new spending for every dollar of continued discretionary spending.

The legislation will end up hurting many of the people it purports to help. Debt-fueled spending sprees may “feel good” today, but it’s like showering cocaine on an addict: it’s not compassion, it’s cruelty. Farmers will see more land sold to foreign buyers when taxes inevitably rise to meet our obligations. Our children will be saddled with crippling debt. Interest payments will be the largest item in our national budget.

Congress has known about this deadline since they created it in late September. There’s no reason why this couldn’t have gone through the standard process, instead of being rushed to a vote right before Congressmen want to go home for the holidays. The urgency is 100% manufactured & designed to avoid serious public debate.

The bill could have easily been under 20 pages. Instead, there are dozens of unrelated policy items crammed into the 1,547 pages of this bill. There’s no legitimate reason for them to be voted on as a package deal by a lame-duck Congress. 72 pages worth of “Pandemic Preparedness and Response” policy; renewal of the much-criticized “Global Engagement Center,” a key player in the federal censorship state; 17 different pieces of Commerce legislation; paving the way for a new football stadium in D.C.; a pay raise for Congressmen & Senators and making them eligible for Federal Employee Health Benefits. It’s indefensible to ram these measures through at the last second without debate.

We’re grateful for DOGE’s warm reception on Capitol Hill. Nearly everyone agrees we need a smaller & more streamlined federal government, but actions speak louder than words. This is an early test. The bill should fail.

The House should pass a clean CR and force the Democrat controlled senate to approve the bill or vote it down and shut down the government. A government shutdown would only last until Republicans take control of the senate on January 3.

  23. From “The Scroll” (Tablet Magazine), a sophisticated dissection of how “Biden” operates: i.e., deception upon deception upon deception, all buttressed by reinforcements from “other sources” (e.g., planted “experts” and/or “media”) and then protected and secured by any number of necessary coverups, lies and misdirection to further muddy the waters…all of which enables multiple layers of disinformation, subterfuge and sabotage.

  24. This looked like a really interesting video, but I can’t watch it. I’m told I have to sign in to YouTube to prove I’m not a bot. I neither have nor want a YouTube account.

I know you like to post interesting videos on your open threads, but we can no longer watch them. Just thought you should know.

  25. mkent:

I think YouTube does that when a person has some sort of IP tracking block or uses a VPN. Perhaps that’s the case for you.

  26. I have sometimes encountered the You Tube “sign up” notice here and at other blogs. Fairly often, if I refresh the page, or check back the next day, the blocking notice disappears.

  27. ben rhodes ought to wear a propeller head, he’s smarter than your typical washington reporter, but then so is a irish setter, they need more of them in the press pool,

as for Sachs I know his number, and all the endorsers on the board, I know this putting a reformed al queda?? at the head of the syrian government is stupid, like Bin laden’s birthday present from hell, did we learn nothing from hillary’s big adventure in libya and egypt the receipts I had from my old blog,

johnson’s keystone cops adventure, dejavu all over again, how is it with four members norma desmond commands the destruction of the republic,

of course the first line of business is to arrest mark elias, who stole a bunch of senate seats this time around,

Tommie vietor was mr obamas driver, so the likelyhood of any wisdom coming from him, is dubious,

  28. And yet, and yet…
