Now that we’ve had our fun, I have to say that these sort of gaffes don’t interest me much. All politicians are subject to some tongue-slippage. Obama’s however, can be very odd indeed.
Once is an anomaly; twice, a coincidence; thrice, a trend; everything after, evidentiary (usually tagged exhibit A, B, C, and so on).
Another item for the bulging “what if Bush had done this” file.
“Jewish janitors” reminds me of a fond dream: go back to college, major in sociology, flunk my classes, then change my major to physics and graduate (again!). I’d like to be the only person in human history ever to do that.

You are right. I remember reading the comments of some reality show — Survivor, I think it was — who said that if they have 60 hours of film on you and are going to show 15 minutes, they can make absolutely any story or any character out of you they want.

As you all may know, there was a mitigating circumstance for Dan Quayle’s gaffe. He had been provided a list of the ‘correct’ spellings of the words, one of which was ‘potatoe’. It is true that he did not spot the error on the list and went along with it, assuming that the teacher must be correct.
Maybe he did not have the fortunate experience I had with teachers, even in grade school, who would accept a correction when I was correct in pointing out an error. They helped me learn early that authority was not always right.
Our minds work through association. So, the question is in what context does “Jew” exist?

I was thinking “judo champion” myself. Other possibilities include “jewelrymaker,” “Jewel grocery store clerk,” “Juniper tree grower,” and, of course (of course!) “junebug-studying entomologist.”

The most interesting part of this whole episode is that the Indonesian Imbecile is now on his “billionaires should pay the same taxes as plumbers” (the newest version, so as to avoid Barky’s Joooo-Turret’s, I guess) meaning that he is now advocating a flat tax! Why is everyone missing this? They missed Barky doing the same sort of thing when he argued against the “unfair” tax deductions that high income earners get for their charitable donations.
Of course, the Indonesian Imbecile is, indeed, an imbecile, so it’s correct for people to just ignore anything he says (as he is really too stupid to be taken seriously on any topic) … but it’s still a bit sad to see people letting him get away with another set of contradictory claims. Unreal.
I believe it’s called a ‘kinsley gaffe,’ wherein the politician accidentally says what he really thinks; see ‘bitter clingers.’

He was talking to a group of wealthy San Francisco donors, a group who would have agreed with the “bitter clingers” characterization of rural Pennsylvanians.
