“They can’t arrest us all”: the Laguna Beach uprising

Actually, they could arrest them all, if they called in enough police, and wanted to. But they don’t really want to at this point.
One of the most interesting things to me in the video is the woman with the flag who ran onto the sand with a rallying cry. It’s pretty clear that she planned that action from the start; note the stars-and-stripes fabric of her bathing suit when she strips down. She’s prepared.
Also interesting are the demonstrators’ reactions when she urges them to follow. Most hesitate for a moment, thinking. My guess is that this wasn’t in the game plan of many of them. After that moment of decision or indecision, some follow. As the numbers grow, more are emboldened, and someone says “They can’t arrest us all,” which is the principle behind many mass acts of civil disobedience.
Laguna Beach is a liberal part of California, voting heavily Democratic in presidential elections since the 1990s. But even California has some conservatives, or perhaps these are libertarians.

I note now that in this week we’ve had two women who have been the leaders in civil disobedience. It will be fascinating to see if this expands over the next week. If the movement ever makes it here to New England, then those governors geese are cooked.

I think for the most part the people have declared the lockdown over, at least in my area. Today I saw by far the most traffic on the freeway and even had slowdowns in the familiar spots. Another sign was today was the first time in a while that the ramp meter lights were back on to regulate cars merging on to the freeway.
I’ve been a believer for awhile now that the people will decide when the lockdowns are over and I think we are in the process of that happening now.

But we need places to go and it’s tough on shopkeepers to open illegally. They can lose insurance coverage, lose their business license, be boycotted by the Army of Karens as well as simple arrest.

Regarding the new beach hours that Ann posted. Can someone explain to me how having limited beach hours on a limited number of beaches is better for social distancing than just going ahead and opening them all up ? Its like they are packing everybody who wants to go to the beach into a smaller dimensional and temporal space. Makes no sense at all.

Very little of it makes sense. It’s just like grocery stores that are closing one entrance and making everybody go in and out the same door and cross each other’s paths.
I’m convinced that pretty much everybody knows these things are pure b.s. and are just virtue signaling and power grabbing.

They opened the beaches yesterday in that area. This protest, which was last week – is actually a bit embarrassing to watch. My friends and I got a laugh out of it. [And the Confederate flag, really?]. But, sure, protests. I want to get back to work. Employer thinks otherwise. That’s more serious in my view.
Anyway, the beaches in Laguna were closed last month because the locals – not the protestors who do not live in Laguna – didn’t like the idea of thousands of people out of work flocking to the beach every day and spreading the virus. There concern Is very real. Laguna gets slammed with crowds. In normal times it’s fine but these days precaution is expected. If you lived right in that area you might be less than thrilled to have thousands of people hitting the beach at a time when we’re told to stay home. [Trump still has a National emergency in place].
The beaches are now open so long as people are moving. Was the wait really intolerable? I have a friend who is an ocean swimmer. He swims almost every day from March thru November. He remained patient. Not a big deal. He can swim again. I’m glad to have the trails back.
I notice the funny snipe by Griffin and Om. Yes, I do ride and walk by the beach – just like everyone else who likes to go outside in the area. To Om, I can only say I don’t understand the hate, guy. Anyway, I’m out every day – without a mask. I hate being cooped up and since we are allowed to walk I do. But I also refuse to put others in harm’s way in case I am asymptomatic. I do wear a mask at the market and I stay away from crowded locations. I live in a house with four others and would like them not to get sick. Freedom is important. But so is being a responsible citizen who can respect the rule of law. I would hope you would agree.

Agreed. Meaning specifically since the stay at home order is not mandatory I take full advantage of it. But as someone who is currently living in CA it’s not the tyranny that some want to make it out to be. It certainly might get awful if this goes through the summer – but at less than a month-and-a-half I think we’ll survive. It’s too easy to look back and say we never should have shut down. Even most Republicans agreed that was the right course of action. I think people will remain cautious as we learn to navigate this.
This has a lot more to do with getting life in general back to normal. Sure, it’s the beach, but it will expand to getting businesses open again. After all, we can’t sustain 33million out of work.
My daughter lives in Maitland, FL (suburb of Orlando). She said the jazz club across the street from her house last night was back in full operation. Big crowd, no masks, no social distancing. People are ignoring the orders even more and more. Will this be a problem with the virus? My bet is “no”. Not just gut feeling. It’s now been over two weeks since Georgia starting opening up. There’s no evidence at all of a new wave of infections. In fact their cases continue to flatten and decrease. Since the median incubation time is 5 days, we should have started to see something happening there. Give it another week and if there’s no spike, then people are really going to let lose; and there’s nothing these damn governors will be able to do.

What do you know about Sweden. Most of the news I find online is negative, but it still doesn’t seem like their hospitals are overwhelmed. Hard to get actual data.

To Montage’s point: this entire exercise is idiotic and senseless from a medical and epidemiological point of view. The rituals of debasement we are being forced through are as effective at stopping viruses as wearing a cheesecloth raincoat in a thunderstorm, and just as absurd.

‘Willing subservience‘ Or ‘idiotic and senseless’ is to others following the guidelines established by statutes and laws and put into practice by representatives in government. Don’t like the current rules? Fine. Vote them out and replace them with those who share your views. The problem is you’d have to also vote out most Republicans. They too wear masks and in most cases follow the recommended guidelines. As I have noted before, hindsight is 2020. Every governor in the country and most politicians agreed to take this course of action. The reason is because safety always comes first. I would say it’s an easy choice but difficult to implement. This is how we test a society, a government and an economy. Few are happy with it but doing the exact opposite was an option few wanted to try.
[BTW Om I actually was kicked off a beach with two friends of mine in late March the first weekend after the order. Lifeguard was cool about it though.]

The reason that we have a Laguna Beach arrest at all.
I would expect that every one of the major world powers is employing every technical means they have at their disposal to surveil, monitor, and to keep track of what their enemies and potential enemies are doing.
Thus, in addition to any human intelligence—i.e. human sources—witting or unwitting, and agents on the ground, I would also expect them to be using technical means of gathering intelligence–things like the use of satellite imagery—visual, infrared, etc., the monitoring of radio, computer data, Internet, and cell phone traffic, and many other techniques that am pretty sure exist that I know nothing of.
So, for instance, there were reports of results from Wuhan that indicated that all of the crematories there were working non-stop, that there were massive numbers of funeral urns being delivered to that city, there were stories about long lines of family members waiting for hours outside of crematories waiting to pick up the ashes of their loved ones, and that there was evidence of new land being dug up to provide for burial spaces—all indications that the number of deaths from the Chinese Coronavirus in Wuhan were far higher than the Chinese Community Party authorities were admitting.
Now comes the news that cell phone usage data—or rather the absence of cell phone usage in the area—indicates that for quite some time in early and mid October 2019 the Wuhan Institute for Virology, including the roads in the area, was apparently shut down–keep in mind that Wuhan has a larger population than that of New York City, and is a very built up and congested area. *
This, it would seem to me, might indicate that authorities were trying to stop people from the area around the Institute from traveling anywhere else and, thus, trying to contain, to halt the escape and spread of the Chinese Coronavirus from that Institute.
If this supposition is correct, then, the virus did not first erupt in December, it first erupted in mid-October, or even earlier.
