Lynn Hargrove:
Like Queen Elizabeth’s hats, only not as pretty.
Her mask is custom made to match her dress. The men went with contrasting colored masks.
Mask fashion. Nicely done.
Went for a walk on Plum Island beach today. Lots of families though not so many that we had trouble maintaining a safe distance. Fighting off cabin fever I imagine. We were.
This Slovak scene typifies the loss of reason associated with the Chinese virus. Are these people coughing or sneezing? If not, these masks are utterly useless, a mere symbol of “something bad is out there somewhere”.
It is past time we begin to see the Chinese virus in its true dimension. It is really no worse an illness than the H1N1 swine flu during the Obama era (when the world did not end!), perhaps less so since so many infected remain entirely asymptomatic, except to the elderly and to the vulnerable, people with COPD, diabetes, on chemotherapy or otherwise immunocompromised, thus much less likely to survive the associated pneumonia.
The vulnerable should be isolated, IMHO, and the rest of the population should be immediately freed to work and play as usual. Because of the high R-naught of this virus, herd immunity should be very rapidly achieved, in a matter of weeks.
Spread the damn bug; let’s get this over with and done!
Today’s AP:
“Tracking the spread of coronavirus in the US
For most people, the virus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.”
“New York 8403 cases, 46 deaths”
That should be restated as 8403 known, test-positive, cases! The actual case number is surely much higher.
It’s a bit too late to put on a mask as you feel a sneeze or cough coming on. These masks, as I understand it, are intended to hinder you from spreading the virus if you don’t know whether or not you have it and to keep you from touching your face. Is that really such a bad idea?
The Queen moved from Buckingham Palace to Windsor on Thursday for protection against the virus (she’s almost 94, Prince Philip is 98), and will be canceling public appearances for several weeks. No mask so far, though.
On our walk today in the woods near our house, my wife and I were using lovely blue masks that she made according to some DIY – health instructions. There was also the slightest snow, quickly melting.
hristian Siriano has stepped up to provide face masks to medical workers fighting coronavirus, after Governor Andrew Cuomo offered funding to businesses who can help out with the low supply.
“If @NYGovCuomo says we need masks my team will help make some. I have a full sewing team still on staff working from home that can help,” Siriano tweeted on Friday.
“We’re in contact with @CSiriano. Appreciate his help so much,” Cuomo, 62, shared shortly afterwards. “Who’s next? Let’s do this together, NY!”
Siriano, 34, had a prototype ready to go before the day was done, posting an Instagram video of a staffer wearing a mask his studio had created. “We will be making a few versions of this in order to help as many people as we can,” the designer captioned the clip. “Here is the process so we can get a perfect fit. More to come thank you everyone we hope to get these to the right people ASAP.”
The picture shows something that looks very comfortable to wear, but is not sufficient for medical work, according to my DiL the nurse.
It’s a trivial point, but that picture shows President Zuzana Caputova swearing in the new Prime Minister, Igor Matovic.
The half mask 3m 7500 is better. But the full gas like mask, is probably safer. Also a lot harder to use.
Yammer:
Do you know anything about the use, limitations, fitting, and cleaning of air purifying respirators? No? Astounding, “gas like mask” says it all.
df, yes – the President was elected last year, Zuzana Chaputova (?aputová, the ? is actually a ch sound, like the š, Šatan, the hockey player from 2002, is more Shatan than Satan. Tho the NHL computer game shows him as Satan, in English) Similar Igor Matovi?, said more like Matovich.
“vymenovala vládu Igora Matovi?a” but the names and many other words change their endings based on the grammar. 🙁 not easy nor fun to learn, I still make 2nd grade mistakes. “named the government of Igor Matovi?”
The Prime Minister makes most of the laws, the Prezidentka is mostly a figure.
Note in Slovak, she is the Prezidentka, with a -ka ending, feminine. Not merely a masculine Prezident.
Sorry the Slovak keyboard succeeds with s + hacek, but fails with c + hacek.

Not exactly custom made in the fashion sense, but definitely hand crafted.

That’s punny!

The fashionistas are pitching in to help.
I do not pretend to know who this man is, but he has the right spirit.
