I’m talking a break today from Trump news, Kavanaugh news… — 9 Comments
I’m with you, Neo. I will sometimes go for over a week without watching any news. instead, I swap out for a podcast. You would love listening to Dan Carlin. His history program (Hardcore History) is legendary and his other show “Common Sense” is very topical.
I put you and Dan in the same category (Brilliant!)
I remember a time when we could go days or maybe even weeks without hearing much from or about the president.
God, I miss those days.
I did watch some of the hearings today. The Dems are horrible.Klobuchar has the smuggest look I’ve ever seen.
Once upon a time, I only looked at political news sporadically, on the theory that if the world was ending, someone would tell me.
In 2007, I started following blogs because the upcoming election with a possible Obama candidacy looked unusually interesting, but I could skip days and weeks.
Then in 2008, I started reading every day or so, just to see what people were thinking.
After the election, I became obsessive because…something happened every day.
Sometimes at night, I would think “surely nothing will occur tomorrow that needs my attention” and, somehow, something new and important would make headlines the next day.
Barack Obama ruined my life.
And his Party is still doing it.
Well — I have to blame my addictions on someone.
AesopFan,
Yes, Obama and his sycophantic media fans changed things forever I fear. With Obama suddenly we had to hear his thoughts on everything from the NCAA basketball tournament to Kanye’s new record to the latest episode of Grey’s Anatomy. People on the left (and right sometimes) rail on about Trump and his tweets but it really is just an extension of what Obama did for eight years but Obama had a fawning media to get his points across.
I’ve said it before but the ideal presidents are Coolidge and Cleveland but sadly those days are gone forever.
I’m still working for a living so taking time away from the politics noise is easy. It helped today that we have one of our granddaughters with us (she is not quite two). After dinner we watched “Trolls”. There are several songs which required dancing, my wife and I are happy to oblige! In this context none of that other stuff matters.
Good idea Neo.
My daughter “surprised” me on my 83rd birthday with a kayak. That got me started fishing again in SoCal after I thought that I was too old to fight the traffic, manage a kayak, etc. So. Now I pay virtually no attention to the news. I am either fishing, or researching fishing techniques for the wonderful bays that are nominally only 45 minutes away–or, an hour fifteen or hour-thirty in traffic, even at 5AM. What a shame that a magnificent natural place like California has been so abused by political charlatans, developers, and the like. But, we must learn to tolerate–that is the California way.
Anyway. I am a happier person. I still care; I am just not going to be obsessed. I told my daughters that they would have to live with the policies that they support so fervently, because I won’t be around, and hence have decided that I don’t give a “rat’s patootie” what the future will look like. Didn’t go over well; but,”truth to power”, eh?
I will vote, of course. I may even throw a few dollars behind selected candidates, or causes. That will salves my conscience, if nothing else. But, I understand that tying myself into knots will not change anything.
(Neo: I do have a limited audience of email contacts who, for their own reasons do not research political news and commentary. I feed them information, and quote you liberally, citing your impeccable research and measured opinions. Several have enjoined me not to give it up completely; so I assume that I will still stay mentally engaged, if not emotionally. If I haven’t said so previously, “you are a treasure”.
I’ve had other matters to attend to for a while.
I never started with Trum news. So taking a break is counter indicated.
