Will North and South Korea sign a peace treaty? — 5 Comments

  1. I can’t imagine a scenario where South Koreans are allowed to visit their families in the North. Shouldn’t that be an absolute non-starter for the NK regime?

  2. Anything that opens up NK a bit to the rest of the world is good. It will take a very long time before the brain-washed people learn what the rest of the world is like.

  3. A treaty would be a propaganda coup for the North, designed to drive a wedge between the South and the US. It would make an attack on the North almost impossible, because the South would actively and publicly oppose it. (We are one people, etc.)

In South Korea, for many years, this is how a peace treaty has been framed. The treaty has taken on a ritualistic aura that in no way diminishes its significance, but it doesn’t mean what most US media people think it means.

  4. I think this is a temporary distraction until Trump is out of office, because they need something to make him back-off his aggressive position.
They will dither and demur and run out the clock, unless Trump can push Kim to go through with it.

And I have no confidence NK will honor any treaty that Kim signs, if they see an advantage in weaseling out.

But, it calms things down for a little while.
