Armed robbery thwarted in Cleveland
Two armed robbers chose the wrong Taco Bell to hold up:
An armed robber shot and killed by three Taco Bell employees early Wednesday is identified as De’Carlo Jackson.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner released the 24-year-old man’s identity on Thursday.
Jackson was shot six times by Taco Bell employees after he and another masked and armed robber walked into the fast-food restaurant on West 117th Street on the Cleveland-Lakewood border, according to police.
The robbers demanded the employees get on the ground at gunpoint. Three employees complied and the robbers walked up to the cash register, police said.
Three other employees pulled out their own guns and fired several shots at the duo, killing Jackson.

It looks like one of those cases where armed potential victims used firearms to turn the tables on the perps. Ohio has both open carry and concealed carry laws, by the way. A lot is unreported so far concerning this story, including whether the three employees who were armed were licensed to carry concealed weapons, and whether their weapons were in fact concealed or were carried openly. Two of them are reported to be only 19 years old, and concealed carry in Ohio requires that the person be at least 21, although open carry is allowed at the age of 18 and above.
Also, why were so many employees armed—half—in a Taco Bell? Is this a very bad neighborhood with a history of a great many robberies? Not that that need be the case in order for them to be armed—it is their right, and events proved them prescient—but I was just wondering. I also wonder about the races of the perpetrators and of the fast food employees as well, none of which has been reported although these things often are reported on if the MSM finds an angle they want to push. My preliminary hunch is that both groups were predominantly black, and that this may be a high-crime neighborhood, which could explain why so many employees might feel the need to carry.
My other hunch is that this might have a chilling effect on armed robbery in fast food restaurants in Cleveland. That many armed employees in a Taco Bell should give anyone pause.
However, it probably didn’t give De Carlo Jackson much pause. The dead man had the following background:
Jackson’s criminal history includes three convictions for attempted drug trafficking since 2012. Jackson’s cases were all referred to the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court’s mental health docket because Jackson’s IQ was below 75, according to court records.
He was released from jail in February 2016 after violating the terms of his probation in his most recent conviction.
That’s not very clearly written, but it sounds as though the perp had significant mental/intellectual deficits, had been dealing drugs, got probation and then was jailed for violating it, and was then released. A sad life, a sad end, and I’m glad no one else got injured.
I have my doubts abouthat a 75 IQ score.

Cleveland is about #9 in America so far as violent crime per capita goes. Or maybe #5. Or #15. Depends on who you ask. Pretty ugly, in any case. The population is officially 53.3% black as of 2010..

Might that line about the late, lamented Mr Jackson having an IQ of only 75 be a typo?
I know it’s not an exact science but it seems incredibly low – especially when one considers that the famous hand-signing gorilla, Koko, was reported to have been tested variously at the 75-85 level.
Interesting fact: I read that on one test Koko was asked to identify the single most useful object out of a range made up of a coat-hanger, an old piece of pliable rubber and a banana.
I was amazed to learn that when Koko, quite understandably, nominated the banana over the piece of rubber, she was marked down.
I think Koko was robbed.
The sad to say is that stat after stat tells us that the average IQ for Blacks is ~ 85.
Not everyone is Kayne West.
But, that’s the real problem.
Dudes making astoundingly poor decisions.
Like armed robbery.
If IQ were the reason for violent crime, then Down Syndrome youths would be the malevolent raiders of our age. Criminals make a choice, their IQ doesn’t compel life on the dark side (a side hardly lacking in high IQ individuals).

Cleveland.com does an OK job of reporting the event — they really don’t have the luxury of searching out all the anthropological aspects Neo raises – but they do tease with the IQ point. The website gives a very startling impression of Cleveland and the crimes committed there.

The detrimental effect on the children of single parent families headed by women is well known to sociologists and criminologists. These children are involved early and often with social services and the police. Statistically, rural blacks have about the same crime rates as rural whites so the high black crime rate is caused by the inner city blacks i.e. single parent families headed by women.
Poor confused city person…

new Ohio law begins today, allowing employees to bring guns to company parking lots and licensed Ohioans to carry concealed guns to more places.
Employers can still ban weapons inside their businesses, but they can no longer prohibit concealed carry permit holders from leaving firearms locked in their personal vehicles parked on company property.
The new law also grants civil immunity to employers for injuries and deaths that result from guns brought on company property.

Another case of bear spray failure occurred in Montana on September 4th at about 8 a.m. The bear charged through bear spray to get at Tom Sommers. Sommers was unable to get the safety off his spray can and dropped it as the bear closed with him. He then accessed a pistol, but was unable to shoot before the bear swatted his hand down. As the bear attacked him, it stood on his hand/gun, so he could not shoot.

Brett Santo, 33, of Chestnut Street, walked into Sarah Long’s home on Fourth Street and approached her 15-year-old daughter. Long’s 17-year-old daughter was the first to see Santo and screamed, launching Long into action, police said.
Police said Long grabbed a pistol by her bed and she charged at Santo, but dropped the gun while in her home. She and the 17-year-old then chased Santo out of the house and down the sidewalk until they lost sight of him by St. Mary’s Church.

@ Ray: Two peers of mine in high school were raised in a female single parent household. In place of the father was that of strictness – the drive to maintain a perfect GPA was the standard. Other family members, usually the grandmother or grandfather, helped the mother. One of these two I had a friendship with and when he was expressed his feelings of his now ex-girlfriend while in college he said “She taught me how to be a man.” Granted he was a bit drunk at the time of this confession. Another incident was when a young man when expressed his hurt of not having a mother during a senior retreat in high school.
I’m leaning towards the conclusion that, no matter what those who champion or want to normalize single parent households (or any household other than the traditional nuclear mother-father/woman-man), and no matter what those now adults say who were raised in unconventional households say, every other kid wants a mom and dad who loves and cares for them. The fact that there are successful adults who were raised in single parent households does not defeat the fact that being raised with a mom and dad, caring for one another, in a loving home, is the ideal. Let’s try not to make it harder than it should be.

Yeah, that part of Cleveland is dangerous. Easy access to highways where the perps can escape, lots of low-cost rentals and public housing. Few stable families in that area.
I never leave home without a handgun and I am in a relatively crime free area of flyover country. We are trying to get Constitutioanl carry passed in Iowa. Carry permits put you on a public list. No thanks. No law will ever keep firearms out of the hands of criminals, but laws are designed to keep firearms out of the hands of responsible citizens. When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Trite but true.

Stephen Ippolito – No non-human has an IQ in that range, not even Koko. 20 would be a better number, though even that is complicated and almost ridiculous to say.
70 is the old cutoff for a diagnosis of developmental disability, though we really on functional rather than theoretical performance for that now. 80 is about the minimum one has to have to graduate high school, unless the student is unusually hardworking or is receiving extra help. So think of the kids you knew who couldn’t pass courses even when they tried.
I will note again (pointlessly, as conservatives have as many myths as liberals about what drives intelligence and school success) that the raw candlepower of the brain is 50% genetic and 50% we-don’t-know-looks-like-randomness. Beyond things like eating lead, FAS, or getting hit by a 2×4, environmental causes aren’t putting up the numbers that they actually cause anything. They are other passengers, not drivers.

I have to differ with you on environmental effects on intelligence. The jury is still out, but there are quite a few indications that environment is a factor that matters. See, for example, the Flynn effect, and the heading “environmental factors” in this analysis of the Flynn effect. See also this and this.
The Flynn effect tops out very quickly: about 3 decades, and may be more closely tied to childhood nutrition than anything. I suppose that’s something. Exposure to complex environments, like cities, seems to lead to a mild increase as well. Yet not much, as urban areas are usually among the worst scorers.

What’s more, the Flynn effect is not very well understood, and there are other environmental possibilities (many of which are mentioned in the links).
