Obama, birthers, and horns
This response of Obama’s to a Stephanopoulos question indicates that he knows a good opportunity for ridicule of birthers when he hears one:
I think a problem for [birther-candidates such as Trump] when they want to actually run in a general election where most people feel pretty confident the President was born where he says he was, in Hawaii. He– he doesn’t have horns”¦we’re not really worrying about conspiracy theories or– or birth certificates…
I think there are two interesting things about this statement. The first is Obama’s use of the third person to describe himself. Not sure what it means, but it’s a bit odd, especially for Obama, who usually seems to like to say “I.”
The second is the segue into the charge about having horns.
What did he mean? It may have been a reference to his not being the Antichrist—after all, that Biblical figure, according to prophecy, will have ten horns (it will also have a few other attributes, such as seven heads and ten diadems on the horns, and will be allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months rather than the forty-eight Obama’s in for in his first term).
The horn thing also is a conventional way of referring to the devil. But yet another reference would be to being Jewish: it was long a common misconception, based partly on a Bible passage and Michelangelo’s statue of Moses, that Jews have horns. So is Obama hinting that he might be Jewish? Birthers, take note.
neo, you’re right–the third person thing is really peculiar. I wonder if there’s a connection between lying and speaking of yourself in third person? There do seem to be quite a few references to a connection between referring to yourself in the third person and the narcissistic personality disorder.
Thanks for the new fact. I had never heard Jews were thought by some to have horns. And I’ve seen the Moses, too. I doubt that occurred to Obama. In spite of his schooling, I don’t think he’s that educated.
Neo, You’re barking up the wrong tree. It was a slip of the tongue, he intended to use the royal ‘we’.
“In spite of his schooling, I don’t think he’s that educated.”
Forget about a long form birth certificate, I want to see his transcripts from Columbia and Harvard.
not to get into a long talk about the Antichrist, but I think in evangelical cicles at least , it is generally understood that the “horns” symbolically refer to nations or people groups that constitute the antichrist power base (at least initially) and the whole description of animal parts are hints , from previous empires, about where some of these may be…..

Me too.
Parker,
I would like to see his elemetary school math grades. On second thought, I don’t need to. He has already shown that adding, subtracting, and percentages are not his thing. I would guess that most of his college courses were on victimology in one form or another.
expat,
He certainly doesn’t understand adding & subtracting negative numbers. There is no other explanation for his budget projections. 😉
We all know his scholastic performance was lamentable. Otherwise, he’d overcome his natural modesty and release the records, if for no other reason that to counteract the effect of his numerous faux pas.
“Otherwise, he’d overcome his natural modesty and release the records…”
That is a crack up! Modesty indeed.
I have never really been a birther but I do wonder why a feller would spend two million dollars to avoid showin’ a twenty buck document. Next question? Where did the two million dollars come from?
In the 19th century, people used to believe that Mormons had horns.
Which, don’t be ridiculous: we have them surgically removed at birth.
I do wonder why a feller would spend two million dollars to avoid showin’ a twenty buck document.
Because the birthers are the best thing that’s happened to him. They besmirch the reputation of his entire opposition.
Next question? Where did the two million dollars come from?
Soros. Doy.
When Obama wants to besmirch people’s reputation, he goes out and does it himself or funds a propaganda program to do it. He does not spend that money on lawyers to “defend” something. That is not a propaganda offense at all.
