Good news from Venezuela
The results are in from Venezuela’s election: Chavez wins, but loses.
That’s not a riddle; let me explain. For quite some time, Hugo Chavez has enjoyed a supermajority in Venezuela’s legislature, which has enabled him to do almost anything he wants there. Although after this election he still holds a majority, he has lost his supermajority. By uniting against Chavez, the opposition managed to thwart him. And this occurred despite the fact that Chavez’s forces had gerrymandered voting districts in their own favor.
Venezuela is hardly out of the woods, though. Chavez will continue to command a large majority for at least five more years, until the next Congressional election. And just as the United States faces a possibly dangerous, power-mad lame duck session between November and January even if Democrats are voted out, so will Chavez enjoy his supermajority in Venezuela’s legislature until the new session is seated in January. An awful lot of damage can be done in that amount of time.
Don’t attach much importance to this. It just means Chavez will have to be a little creative in undoing the results of the election, as he has done in the past.
Jimmuh will trot down there to excoriate Chavez’s opposition in 5..4..3..2..
There’s a lesson to be learned here.
Those who opposed Chavez failed to keep him out of office and, once he was in office, failed to halt his power grabs.
They failed because they lacked unity. They were so caught up in petty differences that the true threat was allowed to come to full fruition.
Only by uniting was the opposition able to put a dent in his plans.
Americans need to take this lesson to heart!
We have an administration that will stoop to any level to get what they want, whether it’s through bribery, intimidation, or dirty tricks – all the while claiming the moral high ground and pointing out every (perceived) fault in those opposing them.
For instance, how many times are we going to hear O’Donnell referred to as a witch this campaign season?
Only when we put our differences aside and unite will we be able to put a sufficient dent in Obama’s agenda to cause him to fail – and make no mistake, he needs to fail!
Any republican who doesn’t fully back the candidate chosen by the primary voters needs to be escorted out of the tent, as you can’t have a big tent while a few individuals inside are doing their damndest to chop the poles down that are holding the tent up in the first place!
So is Venezuela’s politics driven by class warfare too? People with four donkeys being pointed out to those with only one?
I spent a lot of time in Venezuela back when they were doing well in getting a democratic government established (early 60’s). It’s a beautiful country with wonderful people.
I am very sad about what has happened there and am dedicated to not letting it happen here. If we don’t fight Obama and his thugs, it could.
In my quick morning perusal of Drudge, I saw a piece from Reuters about a Mexican mayor and his chief assistant found stoned to death at dawn yesterday. Hmmmmmm…C’mon, Venezuelans, how about showing Comrade Hugo that kind of appreciation??
How long do you think Chavez will leave them with that power? Look for people being eliminated one by one – one way or another.
Even though the oppo got over 40% of the seats, preventing the 67% needed for sweeping changes, Thugo still has three months with the old legislature to dial in the changes. You ain’t seen nothing yet, unfortunately.
It is frightening to contemplate how few politicians are hanged
It’s easy to take these words of GKC lightly. But they carry a serious message. Politicians, though perhaps necessary, are the enemy of freedom. They are the human beings who have been lent the power, and power corrupts. More, power draws the easily corrupted and the precorrupted, as well as those who to whom “corrupt” cannot properly be applied because they were evil to begin with.
