Please note the new Amazon widgets
[NOTE: I’m placing this at the top of the blog for a day or two more, just for those who haven’t seen it yet. Then it will be allowed to fall back down on the page and out of sight. But the wonderful widgets will remain.]
The Amazon connection is now working properly. So go right ahead if you so desire and use the click-throughs here, which you may note I’ve changed and expanded.
I actually had a lot of fun assembling the Amazon widgets you see on the right sidebar, All three of them (count ’em, three!) can be used to click through to Amazon and place an order. Anything you buy there (not just my recommendations) will give me four cents for every dollar you spend—minus a few purchases such as Kindle books, or things you had already placed in your cart.
I’ve spaced the Amazon boxes out at regular intervals on the sidebar, so you will need to scroll down a bit to see all three. The topmost one is for book recommendations. It’s stationary and has a second page you can click on. The second and third* are for music and videos, respectively. Both of those scroll automatically and slowly, although each has a pause button on top. They will also temporarily stop moving if you place the cursor over a selection to view the title and price. Pretty nifty, I think, although a bit busy
The reason I’m calling your attention to all of this is that I’m curious to get some feedback on whether you think all the bells and whistles are a plus, a minus, or neutral. For instance, do the widgets affect your loading speed? Do you find the movement of the latter two attractive or distracting (or neither)?
In other words, what do you think? I plan to change the recommended selections now and then, but I can tweak them in a host of other ways.
*[NOTE: On my lovely Mac, I’ve just noticed that on Safari the two scrolling widgets don’t display consistently; sometimes yes, sometimes no. But they do fine on Firefox. All you MacLovers out there, is that true for you?]
Very cool widgets, I buy most of my books (these days many used, or discounted) from or through Amazon. The first time I noticed your blog, William Manchester’s Last Lion stood out. I’ve only read the first volume, quite some time ago, but Manchester has long been my favorite author, after reading The Arms of Krupp. It’s been many years since I read it, but it still stands out as one of my personal top five favorites, actualy probably #2 or 3. If you haven’t had time for it yet, do, it’s a very profound history. Almost every paragraph, in fact sentence, has some stunningly interesting anecdote or piece of background information.
I am one of those darned Mac lovers! Switched from PC (before Mac I was a Gateway customer -(like you) – bought my very first computer from them, and a number after, including my first notebook. Boy…when I think of how bulky and heavy those things were back in the day).
Though I love Safari (I HATE Internet Explorer), sometimes certain websites will not operate optimally when using Safari. I think it has to do with the way the website is constructed, and in which computer language. They are built primarily with PC’s in mind which dominate the market. (On the flip side, that is same reason nearly all virii (? viruses) are designed to screw up PC’s because they can cause the most damage. One of the great things about Macs is that they almost never get viruses (virii ?).
I learned that by accessing the websites on which I have had problems, using Mozilla Firefox usually does the trick. I keep IE on my computer (it came w/ computer) just in case.
When you have problems while using Safari (usually this involves clicking on links which don’t take you to desired website, especially during financial transactions, for some reason), usually the website will recommend best browser to use. If not, look for a Help or Troubleshooting link and usually the first thing listed is “Mac users may have a problem…..” I find it a relief, actually, to know it’s not me; it’s the browser, and it’s easy to access site thru Firefox. (Some smaller websites will only work on IE which is a pain because for some reason, tho’ I have Internet Explorer for Mac, it operates much slower than Safari & Firefox. Don’t know why that is).
By the way, I access neo’s website thru RSS feed and widgets (as well as the PayPal button) do not appear on the webpage for some reason.
I found I have to access webpage w/out the RSS feed to be able to see and access buttons.
I was a Mac user for 10 years, got fed up with “no software” and constant crashes and switched to PC’s … this was in 1999 and marked the beginning of my revolt from blind conformity to a pursuit of common sense and truth. 😀
So you don’t get paid for stuff I already had in my shopping cart, hey?…
Well, shoot. I guess I’ll just have to go out and buy something else. *wink*
and now the left has their stuff coming out already… first – is your business prepared for on site shooters…
new york examiner wins the race…
they are now listing out if you have an active shooter plan at work. and the things one should do.
i like this paragraph…
which is for those without guns…
Confronting the Shooter:
An individual must use his/her own discretion about when he or she must engage a shooter for survival. Make a plan with others in the room about what you will do if the shooter enters. Commit to action and act as a team with others. Do whatever is necessary to survive the situation.
yes… plan with coworkers…
then when something happens and you act
they stand there letting you hang…
wonderful…
If You Can’t Take Cover:
Drop to the ground immediately and lie face down as flat as possible. Move or crawl away from gunfire, trying to utilize any cover between you and the gunfire. When you reach a place of relative safety, stay down and do not move. Do not peek or raise your head in an effort to see what may be happening.
so how do you tell if its safe?
if you put your head up, you die, its not safe yet
this is where the plan with a coworker comes in handy
you tell them your securing somethig, then they take a look. if your sprayed with their brains, its not safe yet.
sheesh.
what, no telling them to make a shooter kit where they are to put a mirror so that they can safely look around corners, and so forth?
if its disgruntled soldiers then they planned a multipoint assault timed to happen at different locations at the saem time.
who uses different locations at the same time to avoid news coverups of their work? one plane hitting a building can be made to be an accident, two planes at the same time? one bomb in a subway is a lone crazy, two in more than one location is waht? one gunman on a base, he is crazy, suffering, impuslive, etc… three of them in different locations carrying out an assault at the same time.
The widgets are displaying well on my Mac.
Neo,
Just bought acouple of items from Amazon through you.
