The Sixties has reached its apotheosis
And it’s fitting somehow that it’s happening in Berkeley:
The city of Berkeley will require medical marijuana dispensaries to give away two percent of the amount of cannabis they sell each year free to low-income patients.
The City Council voted unanimously at Tuesday’s meeting to amend the city’s medical pot rules, which would also allow for a fourth dispensary in Berkeley.
“Basically, the city council wants to make sure that low-income, homeless, indigent folks have access to their medical marijuana, their medicine,” said Berkeley City Councilmember Darryl Moore.
Under the proposal, at least two percent of all medical weed dispensed at a club would have to be provided at no cost to very low-income members ”” and it must be the same quality that’s dispensed to regular paying customers.
“We think this is the responsible thing to do for those less fortunate in our community,” said Moore.
It would be one thing if a significant portion of the people in California with medical marijuana prescriptions actually had a bona fide medical need for weed (hmm; is there a slogan there: “I Need Weed!”?) that could not be fulfilled by other medicines or treatments. There is some research, for example, that indicates this could be true for a small percentage of oncology patients, epileptics, and those experiencing intractable pain.
But I have little doubt that most people receiving scripts for medical marijuana in California do not fall into those categories. There are prescription mills that cater to those who merely want to get marijuana legally and are very liberal in writing scripts for it, and the state is happy to oblige. So now poor people, including the homeless, will be getting theirs, too—for “free”—at least in good olde Berkeley.
Obamacare does not cover medical marijuana yet, nor does Medicaid—although in ten years or so I bet both will do so, and coverage might even be mandated.
Reading this story conjured up a memory from my ’50s childhood, of this ancient Tom Lehrer ditty—particularly the line “He gives the kids free samples, because he knows full well…”:
[Hat tip: Gabriel Malor at Ace’s.]
A weeded up population is easier to control, since they have the emotional control of kids.
I would be interested in seeing an experiment where humans are treated to weed and alcohol, to determine if hypnotic techniques are more or less effective against people under the effect.
I just saw a photo of obama in Texas as a young woman is talking to him about her parents losing their jobs. He has fallen alseep as she is talking. They are sitting at a cafe and he is not only showing her total disinterest and lack of respect but he is alseep.
Besides all his emotional diseases, this man is whacked out on drugs. I am sure his blood work is sealed when and if he has physicals
He is insane and should be evaluated for mental disorders. He is a national security risk and a clear and present danger.
Kit, everyone on the Left is insane. It can’t be fixed, no matter how hard people try to fix one person, there’s always more.
As before, the solution is exile. Deporting Democrats, not migrant workers first.
By this logic, could the Berkeley city council not also mandate that any dispensary or pharmacy give two percent of its inventory to those lees fortunate?
Might this mandate also be extended to providers of other necessities such as food, housing, utilities and transportation?
My argument here looks as though I’m warning of a slippery slope, but I’m not. I don’t think that the city council would force private business to make such provisions.
Actually, I’m suggesting that the Berkeley city council is on record, saying that there’s something special about pot.
Kit, is that picture online? If so, would you please post a link?
Democrats love to do good at somebody else’s expense and then brag about what grade A humanitarians they are. Democrats have such awesome good intentions and humongous self-righteousness. They could give the Pharisee lesonss in sanctimoniousness.
I was very sad when Tom Lehrer decieded to give up song writing for math. Here is my favorite. http://www.elyrics.net/read/t/tom-lehrer-lyrics/the-folk-song-army-lyrics.html
Bill West:
Local governments do have a lot more leeway than the feds in those regards. I don’t know whether there’s anything that would stop them from doing what you are imagining.
These days I’m not even sure the federal government could be stopped. As long as they call it a tax, wouldn’t it be okay with Roberts?
ONe can only hope that every broke and homeless stoner in the entire United States hears about this and immediately sets off to live on the streets of Berkeley and only Berkeley.
Oh dear Saint Andreas hear my prayer!
What could possibly go wrong about this.
The mind boggles.
“One can only hope that every broke and homeless stoner in the entire United States hears about this and immediately sets off to live on the streets of Berkeley and only Berkeley.”
My thoughts exactly.
Dear Mrs Whatsit
Yes that photo is on Atlas Shrugged and it was in the NY Post. Go to Atlas Shrugged and scroll down a bit. You cannot miss it. That little creep is sleeping as this young white woman is pouring her heart out. A picture is worth a 1000 words, once again

Easy way to find Japanese media.
Although I don’t read the reviews. I use the site to sort through names for later.
Rhetorical question: Why does Berkeley have any homeless?
Good old Berserkeley. Just as insane as when I was there. Some things never change- especially the high regard in which Berserkelayans hold themselves.

I live in Berkeley. You are right, almost all the marijuana dispensed by these clinics is for trumped up medical needs; it’s common knowledge here.
The homeless people here have so overrun the city (that gives them free food and even free dogs) that many stores on Telegraph Avenue, a main thoroughfare, have closed.
